We had a fair distance to cover today in order to ensure we got to Sydney for Australia Day, so we had to make some decisions about where to stop! After a bit of lonely planet advice we opted for Coffs Harbour. We walked along the marina jetty out to Muttonbird Island, a small island where the seabirds 'Sea ' come to mate and rear their chicks on land. Around 12,000 of these birds nest on the island during this time of year and guess what... yup we didn't see a single one! We did however see a blue-tongued lizard, and we've decided he's single-handedly responsible for their disappearance. During the afternoon we covered quite a few more miles and planned to set up camp in a nearby nature reserve. ... read more

Hello again- nice to see you all so soon! So we are on our first OzExperience bus - heading for Coffs Harbour! After booking ourselves into the rather dubiously named 'Hoey Moey' hostel, we were delighted to find that in real life it wasn't quite so dubious. Located right on one of the most amazing beaches you'll ever see it was perfect for a chilled out start to travelling life. Even though there wasn't much going on Max was fully entertained by the 30c McDonalds ice creams. Our hostel offered a free trip out to see wild kangaroos (so cute!) and a drive through the banana farms where Sophie bought a ridiculous amount of bananas, determining her diet for the next few days. Sophie and Max had a fantastic time boogy boarding whilst Georgia proved her ... read more

We drove to Coffs Harbour and arrived around 2pm. We went to the camp site which was by a river again and surrounded by trees. We drove to the shops, got some lunch and had a wander around. We then went to the harbour for a walk. We walked along the beach and onto the jetty, and then to a place called Mutton Bird island where the Shearwater birds live. It was a steep walk up the island' but when we got down to the other side we saw two whales in the sea! After our walk, we came back to the camp site and cooked our tea whilst enjoying a couple of cool ciders! We also saw a possum in the bushes next to us!... read more

Friday morning turned on a bit of heat early on so it was nice to be out and about. Rachel had a meeting to attend in Ballina so we headed around to the CBD. While in town we came across one of the best independent music stores I have ever been to. Just Funkin Music had a great collection of music covering all genres at 1980s prices. I just had to add to my collection while I was there and was sorry I could not drop more of my hard earned on the owners but unfortunatley I had donated my pocket money to JB Hi Fi while we were in Brisbane. After lunch we decided to hit the road and get a few kms under our belt. The Northern Rivers region provides fantastic views along the ... read more

Friday 9th 2012. After a quick pack and hitch up we were on our way, we were heading to Tea Gardens where we were meeting up with some friends of Mel Neals who had moved there, where they run a school camp. We arrived and Simone came and met us she said that since there was no kids at the camp at the moment we could stay in there, we went to the office and her husband Brad took us into the camp and showed us around as Simone had to go pick the kids up from school, we unhitched the van and got sorted out and arranged to go to Simone and Brads for dinner. So after a quick photo opportunity with the local kangaroos, a shower and a quick detour to pick up some ... read more

Unbelievably we made it out of Bellingen! The morning we left was quite funny because somehow I managed to stall us so that we didn’t get out of town until lunchtime. I seriously did not want to leave (how hard can it be to persuade a boy that this is the place we’re meant to be and it’s ok to abandon our travels?!). So I had an extreeemely slow breakfast… took foreeever doing the washing up… remembered I needed to go to the shops… and post a letter… and go to the cash machine… then fell in love with a couple of houses before realising they were both for sale (a sign or what!)… and then took us on a drawn-out drive around the outskirts of Bellingen… and 9km of gravel road to see the farms… ... read more

I know this is a travel blog site dedicated to our Big Lap in 2012 but I am going to be a bit narcissistic and commit this entry completely to our Wedding Day which occurred just over a week ago on Saturday March 3, in beautiful Coffs Harbour on the NSW North Coast. In fact I alluded to our wedding on our first post because in reality it is the initiating event that starts the Big Lap for real. It was more of a wedding weekend than a day and it began on the Thursday when ourselves and many others made the journey to Coffs Harbour; we had rented a magnificent 3 story beach house called "Ticie by the Sea" for 4 days, so our friends and family could share as much time as possible with ... read more

Had some repairs carried out on the car in Ballina and the replacement part was making a rattling noise so had to take the car into a gas repairer here in Coffs - first he put a new part in then realised it was the wrong one so had to wait for another replacement finished up staying for 2 weeks while waiting for the second replacement. Did the Mutton Bird Island walk with the amazing views over Coffs (very windy though). Checked out the Forest Sky Pier up at Bruxner Park in the hills backing onto Coffs Harbour - a very winding road which went up a hill for about 6klms and there were many banana farms all the way up this winding hill. The views from the Pier were amazing as was the Pier itself. ... read more

Tuesday 21 Feb Arrived at Coffs Harbour and boooked into the Park Beach Caravan Park (stay 4 nights and pay for 3 with TT disc $93). Coffs would be a good place to come and stay with kids as there are a lot of activities aimed at kids. Even the caravan park has the best kids pool we have seen with lots of fun things in the pool. Coff's is quite a big and busy place right on the ocean. Checked out the old jetty. NSW has had the coolest and wetest summer most people can remember - we have been lucky and missed most of the rain but the weather is just perfect at the moment - about 27 degrees since we have been here with just a nice gentle breeze to keep the temperature ... read more
