Logan is a very nice city, but I think Pam misses Knoxville. She wants to paint her living room orange. Last night we had a garbage disposal mishap, but with cunning and teamwork, Pam and I were able to overcome it. Things started going wrong for Pam early in the day, and when she returned home from work, she brought her bad luck with her. She broiled some salmon for us, but when she poured vinegar over the hot salmon, a fierce pungent fishy-vinegar gas filled the kitchen and stung our eyes. Pam had a really difficult time, she had to leave dinner to flush her eyes out with eye drops. We opened the windows in the kitchen and the front door, despite the freezing temperatures, but Pam still had to leave to get out of ... read more

A snow covered New York might look really nice in the movies but nothing could prepare us for how cold it's been. We got in on Wednesday evening and spent a few hours sampling the local Irish bars. We were all pretty tired and had a big day of sightseeing planned for Thursday, so had a relatively early night. The night will be remembered purely for a full speed pelt through the streets of New York back to our hostel. We were worried we would literally freeze if we didn't move quickly - it was about -15. Big day of sightseeing yesterday in temperatures of -13 (the extra 2 degress made all the difference!!) and we took in the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, Grand Central Terminal and the site of the World Trade Centre. ... read more

I’m just sitting here watching the snow fall outside the window, sipping hot chocolate (full of marshmallows...real marshmallows, not the powdery freeze-dried kind) from Pam’s pink “wired woman!” mug. It snowed a little last night, and it’s been snowing a little today. Katherine and I went out in the morning. I guess I thought I could walk on top of two feet of snow, but I can’t. I fell through, which was unfortunate because I was only wearing sneakers (the kind with mesh on the sides to let your feet “breathe” when you work out). That’s the only pair of shoes I have right now, because most of my stuff is on it’s way to Germany. Getting your shoes wet in Utah is a big deal if you only have one pair of shoes, but I ... read more

” The voyage of discovery is not seeking new landscapes but having new eyes. Marcel Proust “ January 26, Wednesday Fishing Day meant an early “get-up”. I made the lunches and Bob went to purchase the bait, squid and shrimp, and Rob was already cleaning up the boat. All aboard and off we went on a beautiful calm sunny morning. Floyd was my fishing tutor and Bob worked with Rob. The rods were big and at first a little awkward. The first stop was to “catch more bait” and that we did. Every time the line went into the water another fish bit! Cutting and baiting the hook, from my perspective, was a dirty job, but getting the fish off the hook was even more of a challenge. My first catch was a 22” grouper! Unfortunately ... read more

Aaaaa-loha, Well my friends, it has been a long time since I last updated my blog; and a lot has happened. I think that this first update will be for our time in Oahu only. Jen and I left for Hawaii on the 11th of January, spent the night in LA and then arriving in Honolulu, Oahu on the 12th. Upon arriving we were greeted at the gate by a Hawaiian girl who had lei's for both of us (a little surprise I arranged for Jen). The first night we stayed in a hostel in Waikiki, a pretty fun place that had a bunch of activities set up for its guests, but they only had room for us for one night. The rest of the time we stayed in a hotel called Big Surf. Which was ... read more

Hey folks, Well, we survived the bus...all 12.5 hours of it. Managed to get a bit of sleep, despite it being totally freezing for the whole journey. Arrived around lunchtime and decided it wasn't too far to the hostel, so we'd walk it, complete with rucksacks and all. Fortunately we didn't have to hike up any of the notoriously steep hills to get there, but did have to negotiate 6 flights of stairs once we'd arrived: the sedatary commute of the last 6 months seems a distant memory! Having showered and eaten, we headed for the harbour to check out the Alcatraz tour times for tomorrow. Managed to stop a couple of times on the way, once for a quick look around a magnificent Catholic Cathedral, and a second for a devine brownie and coffee. Timed ... read more

Katherine and I got up early this morning to catch our plane to Dallas/Fort Worth and then Salt Lake City. The flights went really well. Katherine was awake for all of the first flight, but she fell asleep right as the plane was landing on the second flight, so she was in a little bit of a daze when we got off the plane, but she recognized Aunt Pamela right away. When we arrived at Pam’s house in Logan, Katherine started dancing and flapping her arms like crazy, and that’s how she spent most of the evening. I guess she’s happy to be here. The mountains are snow-covered and beautiful. I left the cords to connect the camera in Katie’s room, and she’s asleep now, so I’ll have to add pictures later. I’m really happy to ... read more

OK, I'm back again, in Steamboat now, visiting one of the English girls (Kelly's sister is living in Steamboat for the winter). Dave and I left Durango after we decided that it would be useless to wait for passes to open to Silverton, and instead went to Telluride. I had a contact (friend of a friend) in the area, so we made our way to his place, "The House of Leasure". These people lived on the top story of a three condo complex up on a hill overlooking the town, and opposite the ski area. If anyone has been to Telluride you understand how incredible the area is, the town is tucked into a box canyon with mountains all around, some over 13,000 ft. The house was an interesting place. I'm not entirely sure how many ... read more
