It's still very cold here. The past two days we've spent most of our time at home. Since we're in the country's most conservative state, we decided to celebrate Bush's state of the union address by playing the "state of the union drinking game". That didn't go over too well, though, because Katherine kept begging for alcohol, so I couldn't bear to drink it in front of her. We ended up turning off the TV, putting away the alcohol, and reading to Katherine. Even though I missed most of Bush's speech, he still made me upset. I got nervous when he started talking about Iran and Syria (no more wars, please), and I really didn't like the way he said we needed to help males in the inner-city. What about females? Anyway, at least the state ... read more

Click on the to see more about the state park St George State Park “ Always be a little kinder than necessary” -James m. Barre We walked around Manatee Springs in the AM, the water is so warm, I can understand why the manatees like to come here. It is a wonderful place to picnic and walk the boardwalks and view the rare birds nestled along the Suwannee River. We didn’t see any manatee but there were lots of vultures, doing their clean up job. We fueled up and continued our journey west and north along the panhandle coast. We arrived at St. George State Park. This area is called the forgotten coast of Florida, and that is a wonderful secret. The campground is just beautiful, it is set back some 4.5 miles from the park ... read more

No, I'm not gone yet. I'm packed and almost ready to go, but I'm starting to get nervous. One big problem is I don't have semester-long housing quite squared away yet, and won't until a few days after I arrive in Ireland. The plan is to stay at a Bed and Breakfast (called Cregan's-- sounds cozy, right?) for a few nights until I can check out some houses and apartments around Univ. of Limerick and find a suitable one. Being the (generally) organized person I am (not counting my room), this last-minute stuff is sometimes hard to swallow. But, the UL international student guide says to find housing in this way, so I just pray it all works out when I get over there. I fly out of RDU on Sunday afternoon, hit the airport in ... read more

Who would want to live on an Air-force base? Air-force bases are a mystery to most civilians. Armed security personnel stand at the gates alongside cement barricades. You can see fighter jets fly overhead in the sky and hear the rumble of their mighty jet engines but without special clearance you can’t get on a military base, especially after 9-11. What kind of people live in these places? Who would want to risk their life in such a career? Who would marry someone in the military? Are they fanatics? I had a chance to visit a base and was I surprised. What a group of really fine people. You have to spend time with them to really know this. Unfortunately most of us never get the opportunity. Hey everyone, I guess I have some catching up to do. The last time I wrote was about Telluride, I’ve covered a lot of time since then. So, the next stop after Telluride was a little town called Ouray for a day. This is a tiny town nestled in a box canyon but with no ski area, just a really cool public hot spring and an ice festival the weekend we were there. Ice climbing is an interesting sport, the climbers are equipped with crampons and ice axes, and they basically just attack the ice as they climb, with a constant spray of ice chunks, some bowling ball sized head hunters, raining down. But these guys were impressive, the speed climbers got up the ice faster than I can climb a ladder. We also toured the ... read more

” If everything’s under control, you’re going too slow.” Mario Andretti Lazy Days was an interesting campground, and filled with huge rigs that cost up to $750,000. We had a small breakfast and visited the camp store, nothing special. We had been toying with the idea of purchasing a GPS system for the Bothan, guess we are tired of getting lost. We found one we really liked, it mounts on the dashboard and is activated by touch or remote and has a voice system. So we ordered one to be sent our campsite at St. Andrews. We started out on I-75 and decided to take the scenic road Rt 44 over to Rt. 19. We stopped to have some tint put on the windows of the Bothan, and discovered a front headlight was out, so it ... read more

Yesterday afternoon, Katherine and I went out for a play-date with other toddlers. It was my first time to drive in Utah, and I was a little nervous, but the grid system they use here is quite logical once you get used to it. I must admit that I found my way around without looking at a map. Plus, everywhere you drive, the views of the mountains are beautiful. I haven’t been outside yet today, but it seems cold. The temperature isn’t going to get above freezing. Time for Katherine’s escape-proof snowsuit! ... read more

I know you are probably wondering what happened to us. Did we fall into a black hole? Of course not, but there have been a lot of changes. And I do mean a lot. We are both in Iraq now. But that’s the last part of the story. Here is all that happened in between. Sunday saw us flying to Houston for our job processing. The company put us up in a very nice hotel, fed us 3 times a day and subjected us to medical exams and a multitude of informational briefings while they determined if we were KBR material. Sunday arrived and it turned out to be a very long day. Up at 4AM and at the Medford airport by 5AM. Took off at 6AM. Had enough of a layover in Phoenix to get ... read more

Well on 28/01, we flew into Los Angeles from Vancouver and met up with Az as planned (except we were given separate rooms and we thought Az was missing in action) But he stumbled upon us on the street of downtown LA. That night we headed to Hollywood... What a fake and over-rated place that is. In fact the best part about it was Hooters. The day after we headed to Long Beach and saw the Queen Mary But generally it's ordinary, then onto Santa Monica (after we worked out the stupid public transport system, In LA, stations are based on street names not places!!) and had dinner on the end of pier. Santa Monica is a really nice place. The following day we "experienced" Universal Studios which is, about as fake as Hollywood. Funny that ... read more
