July 7th Off to Bryce canyon. The trip started out with desert but after a while the landscape changed and we found ourselves driving through canyons and Very nice views and a relief after the desert. We did at some time have a funny experience - suddenly in the middle of nowhere there were hundreds of windmills on a hilltop, quite impressive. We could began to see the red rocks that we have seen on pictures of Bryce Canyon. Luckily the trip was not as long as we anticipated always nice when it’s that way round. We got an ok room but it faced the road and after looking around a bit Paul went and asked if we could get one facing the lake away from the road - alas it wouldn’t be free until tomorrow ... read more

We left last night for Bryce Canyon. The drive took about 2 hours. What surprises me the most about Utah is how green South Utah is. When I thought of Utah I thought it would be desert. Parts of it are, but a big portion of it is a national forest. Bryce Canyon is beautiful. It is full of multi-colored rock foramtions. We took a three mile hike down into the canyon. We were able to hike through some caverns. We then had a picnic lunch in Bryce and went to another hike called the Mossy Cave. Surprise! It leads to a mossy cave. Not much to look at. But we took another path to a waterfall and the girls played in the water. We stayed at the Best Western Rubys Inn and our room looked ... read more

Spent some time at Bryce Canyon today. Nice park. The park is known for its hodoos, which you will see in the photos. The Navajo say that the cayote, who is known as a trickster, turned the people into stones. The park was full of pine trees and had great scents, and the weather was great. Called it quits early today as I didn't stop until late last night.... read more

Bryce Canyon National Park is open year-round, drawing over two-million visitors yearly from all around the globe. The majority arrive in the summer months, but Bryce Canyon is truly a park of all seasons. Although the numbers passing through Bryce Canyon's gates do not compare to those of nearby Zion, it's still a bustling place due to the size of the park. Bryce Canyon is only 38,385 acres and tucked in that small space is fifty-miles of hiking trails. The shuttle system in Bryce Canyon is voluntary and only runs during the summer months. A must do in Bryce Canyon is the eighteen-mile long scenic drive. There are many pull-outs and short walks at the view points. Sunrise, Sunset, Rainbow, Farview, Yovimpa and Inspiration point are all easily accessed from the scenic drive. The hiking trails ... read more

Another spectacular day. We started out early in the morning about 7 a.m. with a hike up the Emerald Pools trail in Zion - and when I say up I mean up! There are three sets of pools that are formed from runoff from the porous limestone cliffs and you climb like a mountain goat to all three of them. Our reward was being about the only hikers on the trail and then a serene breakfast at the top pool which we had to ourselves. And yes, Lauren, both your father and mother made it up with no problems - how much harder could Katahdin be?!!! A gorgeous drive from Zion to Bryce, climbing through the high plateaus of Utah and enjoying a thunderous late spring rainstorm. We even saw some buffalo on the drive. Bryce ... read more

Hey now....We’ve been cruising around southern Utah for the last several weeks having a great time. The weather has been decent, a little warmer than average. But first, you may have noticed Patty has got the Jamie Lee Curtis hair thing going on. She said before the trip that she wanted to go “natural”, stop coloring her hair so she cut it all off…says it’s a lot easier to take care of… I kind of like it. Anyway, after Arches, we drove a couple of hours over to Capital Reef NP and stayed 5 days. A much less visited park…we had a great campsite right on a fruit orchard & meadow…the first evening 15 mule deer came to the meadow and we had “dining with the deer”. Next stop was about 100 miles west on Hi-way ... read more

Bryce Canyon Drove to Bryce canyon early this morning; words cannot describe it. Green flora backgrounded by red rock and blue sky, it was immense and indescribable. I think my favorite picture is of the Hoodoos, but the huge erratic and staircase turned out quite well, too. We took Queen's Garden trail to the Northern part of the Navajo Loop. The hike out kicked both our butts; gorgeous day, amazing scenery. We were starving when we returned to St. George, and went to the Brazilian grill. Too much wine, and lots of great conversations followed. I am sleepy, and it is time for bed. ~n These and more can be seen here: Bryce Photos ... read more

We hit Hat Shop trail on our last day in Bryce. The weather certainly was nice to us by keeping the clouds scattered all over the sky protecting us from the heat of the sun during the hike. Exactly as described in the trail guide, Hat Shop trail was obviously quiet and less crowded than any other trails. It's not stunning like Navajo trail-but it sure provides you with ample solitude and a good opportunity to observe Clark's Nutcrackers, birds of the high mountains of the American West, in their nature. It was so quiet that even small movements of various animals could be heard. It's the trail that highlighted your auditory skill. Wonder why this trail is named "Hat Shop", walked further down for about 30-40 minutes and let the trail speaks for itself. Hat-shaped ... read more

Thank you weather for continuing to behave, so we had an opportunity to enjoy a nice hiking day today. I couldn't wait to get down to the bottom of the canyon and stand among the strange-looking hoodoos. Reading from hiking trails descriptions, Queen's Garden and Navajo trail combo seemed to be the most interesting trails. Starting at Sunset Point where a panoramic view of Bryce can be appreciated, we gradually descended into the canyon. The trail was rocky and gravelly and varied in coloration in different areas. As the sun became stronger and stronger, many hikers found refuge in the shades of the trees that appeared as if someone had thoughtfully placed them in just the right spots. Just when I felt that it was getting hot, I was about to approach another tree. We walked ... read more

We started our day with food, of course. We stayed at Bryce View Lodge, a motel, owned by Ruby's Inn Best Western located across the street. It seemed as though we crossed the road to the civilization. The motel had, well, a place for you to sleep while the Inn had pretty much what a tourist would want. The biggest disappointment for us at Bryce is availability of good food. The hotel served standard American food either buffet style or regular style; I don't get it. Serving basic American breakfast is not in any way bad, but managing to make basic American breakfast bad is just plain intolerable. The meals got us to talk about how we might improve food quality around here. We're guessing that the basic problem appears to be Byrce high altitude landscape, ... read more
