12th May, 2009 Bryce Canyon Left Zion NP today headed for Bryce National Park. Steep Climb out of Zion Canyon and through two tunnels, the first 1.1 miles long and only able to fit a large vechile through by shutting off one end and then driving down the middle - yep that was us and we paid $15 for the privilige. Quite breath taking. On this winding steep road we came around a corner and everyone was stopped all over the place taking photos of a herd of Big Horn Sheep on a steep cliff. Then off through Mt Carmel, Hatch, just small towns but centres for farming, again a lot of irrigation. Then we drove through Red Canyon (more orange to us) and onto Bryce (where we are camped) and then for a trip into ... read more

Paul slept in this morning but he felt much better. He actually had a really great day. Hopefully whatever bothered his body yesterday was just a fluke and we'll be good to go for the rest of the trip! After eating breakfast in our room, we checked out of the hotel and spent the morning exploring Zion Canyon. Since cars are not allowed in the park (unless you stay at the lodge, then you can park there only), we took the bus system up to the North end of the canyon. We enjoyed visiting the bus stops to see the beautiful sights and took a few short hikes. Levi loved being on the bus and did a great job in the backpack. Paul had fun taking photos on his camera and asked lots of questions! Once ... read more

Up at 8am on the dot and showered ready - hopefully - for our ride. Karina rang the office at 8:45 to book the 1/2 day morning ride. They were only running afternoon rides and told us just to turn up at 12:30pm for the 1pm ride. After a couple of breakfast bars and an orange juice for breakfast the first order of business was seeing about getting the slow leak in the tyre fixed. We suspected it had been flat since we hired it, as the handbrake warning light had always been on - until the tyre was flat enough for me to notice and I pumped it up. No warning light! By now I had put air in twice, and noticing a large car service centre at Bryce, we decided to get it fixed. ... read more

Went to Bryce Canyon NP today. This is a really beautiful park! Very different from anything else we've seen. They had snow day before yesterday and a lot of it was left on the ground. The moisture seems to enhance the color of the rocks. We took lots of photos and video. The weather was clear, breezy, and occasionally a little chilly. Visibility from the pull-offs and view points was well over 80 miles. Charlie wasn't feeling well by the time we headed back to the camp ground and didn't have dinner with us. We had left a crock pot with chicken breasts, unions, and mild salsa simmering while we were gone. Boy was that good! In addition to Bryce Canyon NP we also went through Red Canyon NM. ... read more

We enjoyed a lazy morning before heading out for Bryce Canyon. It was a beautiful sunny day, warmer than yesterday, and we were all excited about seeing Bryce. We stopped at the visitor center in Red Rock Canyon, which is really your first hint of hoodoos, but in bright red. Then through two small tunnels cut through the red rocks and on to the entrance to Bryce Canyon National Park. We had seen post cards and pictures of Bryce with snow, but to actually see it was overwhelming. The colors were so bright and the contrast of the snow, the green of the pines and the oranges of the rocks was terrific. We went to all the overlooks, and by the time we got to the end of the road at mile 18, elevation 9100 feet, ... read more

Oct 31, Nov 1, 2008 Millions of years of erosive forces of nature have sculpted some of the best rock art that nature could sculpt in the form of hoodoos of Bryce Canyon. There are hundreds of them in the Bryce amphitheater. They vary in height from a few feet to the height of a few story tall building. A shade of red and white are the main colors that these hoodoos wear. Some are completely red, a few are completely white and some have their top sedimentary layers white while the bottom is all red. Looking at these hoodoos close up, you cannot help but marvel at this incredible work that nature has put up. Zion to Bryce is less than two hours drive. I reached there around noon. Bryce Canyon park welcomes you with ... read more

Well I am writing on Saturday Oct 11. However I am writing about Wednesday. We are behind because of the lack of wifi hotspots. I am stealing one from another motel at the present. Wednesday was spent mostly in Bryce Canyon. We hiked into the hoodoos at the bottom of the canyon. This was a difficult hike but well worth it. It is like a fairyland hike with all the hoodoos and cliffs surrounding us. Latter we hiked into Red Canyon and up to an area with 15 arches. The pictures I am uploading presently are from these areas. Yesterday Friday we drove through the grand staircase escalante NP. We hiked Kodachrome state park. There we saw a rock formation that looked like Fred Flintstone. This was an easy hike across the desert floor. We also ... read more

Left Las Vegas and headed through Arizona and then into Utah, home of the mormon. Still in dry desert and canyon land, but the futher north we go it is greening a bit and more trees' growing. Stayed the night at Bryce Canyon, and we woke up to it snowing outside. From the mid to high 30s for the last week, it was a shock to have a day where the tempreture didnt get over 5 deg. Although it was sunny, the wind was howling and it was absolutely freezing and bitter. The landscape looks like something out of a cartoon and we keep waiting for the roadrunner and wylie coyote to come out of nowhere. Same some Pronghorn deer crossing the road and a Praire dog in thew field, although it doesnt look like a ... read more
