After visiting Zion National Park, we hitched up the 5th wheel trailer and dragged it to the vicinity of Bryce Canyon National Park. We stayed at an RV campground about 20 miles west of the park. We enjoyed a two day visit to Bryce Canyon, visiting almost every turn out and scenic view. We drove to the far end of the park and began working our way back toward the entrance. We covered half of the park the first afternoon, and the other half the next day. Bryce Canyon is a curbside photographer’s dream. I hope you will enjoy the sampling of photos in this post. I’m no longer able to do long hikes, and driving to the scenic view points was a wonderful treat. We were last here about 25 years ago when we pulled ... read more

As promised, the trip to Bryce was different. We started out by taking I-15 north to Cedar City, a city I would like to live at least part of the year. Our visit was short - fill-up of gasoline, coffee, and ice followed by a trip to Lins Market for supplies. The route I selected took us up the mountains east of Cedar City to a National Monument named Cedar Breaks. This is also a favorite spots and Emily agreed, after a short walk to the view point. This could add another facet to our Sept 2011 trip as the fall colors at this altitude (10K) come early. We then headed to a place called Panguitch and a lake by the same name. The lake is not very picturesque and did not even generate a paddle ... read more

September 3-5: As we emerged from the Extra-Terrestrial Highway, we saw a roadside stand advertising “Extra-Terrestrial Jerky and 100% Honey”. The owners were not there, just dirt. I wonder where THEY went? At the Visitor Center in Cedar City, Utah, we queried about which way to go first: Bryce National Park or Zion National Park. (Thanks to both Sky and Eliza for suggesting these.) A helpful woman behind the info counter said, “Well, tomorrow's high temperature in Zion is set at 106 degrees and it will be in the 80s at Bryce.” Guess where we chose? We were also concerned that we were heading into the Labor Day weekend (the last log weekend of summer in the USA) and wondered if the campsites in the parks would be booked out. She suggested we go to Cedar ... read more

Breakfast was included in this hotel and it was a full American, poor boys were not keen on getting up at 9.00 but managed to turf them out. Drove to the canyon which was only a mile up the road and as we went to pay our $25 entry the ranger said it was a free day. Found out later that Barak Obama had declared all National Parks free for the weekend to encourage the Americans to go out walking - lucky for us. Stopped at the visitor centre and saw a scarab beetle on the wall. Drove 17 miles to the end of the park and then made the stops on the way back so we were on the right side of the road. The forest we drove through was very burnt, mostly the fires ... read more

Bryce Canyon National Park is on the way from Lake Powell to Zion so we thought we would stop there to break the journey. Yet another canyon to add to the ever increasing collection of ones that we had visited. This is not a large canyon, certainly when compared to the Grand Canyon, however it is one of the most dramatic. It consists of a lot of spikes of rock known as Hoodoos. These are apparently formed by water in cracks in the rocks expanding and peeling off layers of rock to leave some very dramatic rock formations. I was in my element with the camera, helped by the fact that it was a perfect day. There was a really nice two and a half mile circular walk through the canyon called the Queens Garden Trail, ... read more

Sigh ... it's time to re-enter the corporate world. But before that happens, I decided it was time for Homyar's first road trip in the U.S... Vegas, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We decided to take 5 days to drive more than 1,800 miles through Nevada, Utah, Arizona and back through California. The first day was a grueling 10-hour drive to Vegas. The temperatures of 104 F reminded me of Chennai. For Homyar, the highlight of Vegas was stumbling upon the Lion Habitat at the MGM Hotel. Being just inches away from the lion (separated by a very thick piece of sound-proof, smell-proof glass) was a thrilling experience. The habitat was built at a cost of $9 million to stiffle the lion's sense of smell and hearing. Can you imagine what ... read more

Wow where has the time gone? My stay here at Bryce Canyon is winding down way too quickly. Sunday afternoon I went “Marching to Zion”. I first went to find a wash where my photography friend Don had captured some stunning images in Zion. I was able to locate the area, but as is often the case, my conditions weren’t optimum and the results were so-so. I then headed through the mile long tunnel in the park and captured a few images of the beautiful mountains. I put the top down and drove topless until I got back out of Zion. What an awesome way to see the towering mountains and majesty of Zion National Park. Monday morning I had a fleeting thought to pack up and head to Moab a few days early given the ... read more

Howdy from Bryce Canyon. Saturday was a fun time exploring areas in Bryce Canyon I didn’t visit on my first trip here. After visiting Sunrise Point and hiking part of the Queens Garden Trail, I headed towards Rainbow Point, the southernmost area you can drive to in Bryce Canyon. I packed a picnic lunch and stopped at Farview Point, which I found ironic as I often call my little community of Fairview “Farview”. Even with a little haze, I could see a mountain over 85 miles away. Guess that qualifies as a FAR VIEW! Got up for sunrise in the Park this morning. It was spectacular. I doubt if my images will come close to showing you the magnificent beauty all around me. It wasn’t as cold this morning, only got down to 32. It is ... read more

Bryce Canyon is another of Utah’s beautiful red-rock areas. It is known for its hodoos - pillars of rock formed by the forces of erosion. Several overlooks allow scenic views of the Bryce amphitheatre - the largest in the park. Even though we have been here before, and Steve already has several great pictures (with snow as it was February last time we were here), we had always said that we would come back in the summer and hike down into the canyon to get a different perspective and more pictures. So, that is just what we did. Bryce point has the best panoramic view from the lookout, and we got there just after sunrise. A few clouds faded the light in and out, but we were able to get some great shots anyway. Rainbow point ... read more
