It would have been good to have spent an extra day in Zion National Park, but if we did that for all the places we visited, i think we would be travelling until Christmas! We can't always have things go our way! The drive was not that far from Zion to Bryce so we explored a bit of Zion before we left. It was not the best of weather, but at least it was not raining. We managed to see the Court of the Patriachs which is 3 large rocks named Abraham; Jacod and Isaac. And then, on the way out of the park, we stopped for a short walk for an overlook of the Canyon. At least we got a glimpse of the beauty of Zion. Before we reached Bryce Canyon we drove through Red ... read more

Thursday 8th April Zion National Park to Bryce Canyon National Park We made if to the local 'caff' as planned and feasted on breakfast bagels while we posted our photos and the next installment of the trog (travel blog). After the blazing sun of Zion we certainly didn't expect our next stop to be at a campground where at least half of the sites were still covered in snow, but that's where we found ourselves. The temperatures were an average 22/23 degrees C but in places there was still a few feet of snow. You can see the volume of snow from the photo of our attempt to walk the rim of the canyon - if you stepped out of the compacted snow, you ended up calf deep (Jonathan) or knee deep (Lucille)! We had planned ... read more

I was able to go to Bryce Canyon when I was onshored in Salt Lake last year. Me and my office mates woke up early in the morning.. around 5AM and we were on the road to Bryce by 6AM. It was a good thing that one of my office mate knows his way around Utah so we were able to get to Bryce without getting lost on the road.. We passed through the scenic road.. seeing red canyon and all the amazing rock formations.. We stopped near red canyon to take pictures and to rest for a while after the long drive.. one of my friend.. the one driving the car, got something at the trunk of the car and then he suddenly blurted out that he accidentally left the car key in the trunk.. ... read more

We got an early start from Zion, hoping to snag one of the first-come, first-served campsites at the North Rim. The forecast was for daytime temps in the 60s, 40s at night. Pretty good camping weather. However, when we arrived at Grand Canyon Natl Park, it was only about 45 degrees, and the campsites were all filled. Probably best all around, as we were pretty done with cold nights. We hiked out to Angels Landing, gasping for breath as usual in the high altitude, but the scenery was also breathtaking in its scope and variety. It seems as though there are more Europeans around the Parks than there are Americans this Fall, especially German and French tourists. Its good that more people are travelling to the U.S., in spite of the hassles of getting in. The ... read more

Friday I finished work and got back home around 2pm. Unfortunately, the others weren't back til nearly an hour later. Then people had to shower and we loaded up the car. Stopped for groceries and for Julia to get books from the library. Finally set out about 4:30, which was much later than I had hoped. However, the drive went very smoothly. Even with no music. We had lots of good conversation and saw some pretty stuff. I drove the second stint, mostly in the dark. We were on this dark windy road and suddenly, there were 2 deer. Smack in the middle of the road. Scared the crap out of me. Luckily no one was around on the road and I was able to stop before hitting them. For the rest of the journey I ... read more

Monday, August 24, 2009 Bryce Canyon Utah After blogging last night (and getting the last pictures uploaded just before time ran out) and getting a great night’s sleep, Sophie nuzzled me at the break of dawn to go out. I realized that Sunrise Point was calling, but I was still at the Pillow View Point…I roused myself out of the sleeping bag a couple of hours later, and spent a few minutes with my morning routing, stolen from my friend, J.T., which consists of reading for a while in the tent (I’m almost through with my “Mountain Climbing Disaster” book). For breakfast, in keeping with my “stepping up the culinary food,” I sliced whole potatoes and fried them in olive oil, simultaneously making coffee and cooking the remaining 4 veggie burgers (two for the hash browns, ... read more

In Which the Author Leaves Salt Lake City to Travel to Bryce Canyon National Park via Dixie National Forest Saturday, August 22, 2009 After dropping off Jennifer at the Salt Lake City International Airport, I hit I-15 outta’ town, realizing that I was missing the city and its heavy Mormon-influenced culture and architecture, but I just couldn’t bring myself to dip into a place where religion has such an influence. I got enough trouble not believing anything at all. A stop 25 miles south in a suburb (will the mountains bordering the east, all the valleys contain hours, commerce, and industry), I stopped at a local Smiths (?), parking the truck in the shade (I have a mid-cab window as well, and with the camper top, the window can remain open—I also crack the side windows. ... read more
