Obfuscator writes: We left our motel in Moab and headed back up toward I-70. We could have taken other routes through Utah, but they looked longer, slower, and probably more hazardous. It was really cool to see some of the outside of Arches and Canyonlands National Parks during the day, since it had been getting pretty dark the first time we drove through this neck of the woods. An enormous portion of the drive west on I-70 was mountain. We made frequent stops at the photo pullouts and took a lot of pictures of what they call the Grand Reef, where the road passes through it. Honestly, by the time we got through that range, I was glad, because although the photo opportunities were pretty, they were also getting to be a bit much, what with ... read more

Had quite a bad night’s sleep last night due to all the loud snoring going on in the bunk house. We all got ready and got in the van on our way to Bryce Canyon National Park. But it was quite a long drive so Jon took a shortcut through a dirt road called the ‘Grand Staircase’ which is closed when there has been rain anytime in the last week, lucky for us there hadn’t. The road was so bumpy and rough the van was all over the road but it was all great fun. Jon was getting a little excited and speeding this massive van up and down narrow roads and sharp turns. We first stopped at the Bryce Canyon Visitor’s Centre and had a quick look around. I bought a book about all the ... read more

A couple on an extended vacation books a room at an out-of-the-way B&B. This will be the beginning of an unusual journey, a journey of both sight and sound. They've done this kind of thing many time before and they are not concerned. They will leave the main road and pass through a series of gates, but what they don't realize is that on the other side of the last gate lies, the TwiLodge Zone. We booked this place over the phone on a reference from a hotel. The woman said it was a B&B, "Sort of." We met the host at a local restaurant and she led us up the road on a mule (a type of ATV), through a gate, over a bridge, through another gate, up a steep dirt road, one more gate ... read more

This was my favorite of the National Parks I visited in Utah. I'm not counting the Grand Canyon because that's in a category all by itself. This is definitely a park that I want to come back and spend more time exploring in the future. Bryce Canyon National Park is stunning. Who knew it was possible for nature to make such amazing and colorful features all on its own? The formations look like they are ready to fall over yet are made of stone. According to Utah.com: "Millions of years of wind, water and geologic mayhem have shaped and etched the pink cliffs at Bryce, which isn't actually a canyon but the eastern slope of the Paunsaguant Plateau...Bryce Canyon National Park is named after Ebenezer Bryce, an early rancher who described it as "a helluva place ... read more

First thing after breakfast was our hike on Navajo Loop Trail at sunset Point. The trail is 1.3 miles round trip down a very steep canyon trail into a canyon that gets narrower the further down you go. We had to bend down though a “window” in the rock about half way down. When we got to the bottom the canyon was about 2 feet wide, but hundreds of feet high. Dave did the entire loop trail. I turned back at mid-point to take some great shots of the canyon. We then drove the 15 or so miles to the end of the park at Rainbow Point. As we passed a meadow, I saw a coyote very close to the road. I was within 100 feet of it and got out to take a fantastic photo ... read more

This morning, Elise, Simone and I went on a trail ride to the canyon. Elise road her own horse, Strawberry, and Simone and I rode Heeber. The ride was fairly uneventful as all we did was walk. Simone was immediately bored, and wanted to go home, so we made up some songs about the horses. She brightened up immediately. Elise was start-struck the whole time and was very proud of herself at the end. Joe and Ethan went on an off-road ATV ride this morning. The guide who led it was a “grouchy old fart” as Joe describes him. The guide told them that if they caught them doing fishtails, that he would take their keys away from them and they would walk home! Ethan’s eyes were wide at this point. At the halfway point, Joe ... read more

Yesterday, we drove to Bryce Canyon. We thought it was going to be 4.5 hours, but it was 5.5 hours. We are staying at Ruby’s Inn just outside of Bryce. I was expecting a smaller resort, but this place has everything…pool, store, post office, shopping, internet. We went to the pool and hot tub with the kids and decided we liked Bryce Canyon immediately. These types of resort places seem to work best with young children. Today, we went into Bryce Canyon National Park. The kids are less enthusiastic now, in fact, they are downright whiney about hiking. I know if we can get them engaged in something, it won’t be this painful. We stopped at the Visitor Center again, to sign up for the Junior Ranger Program. The kids are in the swing of earning ... read more

The next national park on our national park marathon was Bryce canyon. It isn’t as big as the “Grand Canyon”. But on my opinion the landscape is much more impressive. Anyway, we took some pictures, walked around and left for Arches national park which is around 4hours away. So we arrived there on late afternoon. Arches national park isn’t very big. But the arches are very impressive. Unfortunately it started to rain and we had to leave to Salt Lake City. So we couldn’t stay for the sunset…... read more
