On the way to Capitol Reef we also visited Goblin Valley State Park - an unusual collection of sandstone hoodoos that look a lot like mushrooms. Some of them are quite large and it was quite a maze to walk amongst them. We had a slight detour getting out of the park though and back on to the main road. I had a map that said there was another road back out but this actually turned out to be a 4wd drive road down a wash. It was rather late in the afternoon before we got back out again! The next morning we did the scenic drive through Capitol Reef National Park and saw quite a lot of mule deer. Capitol Reef is known to the Indians as the “land of the sleeping rainbow” and it ... read more

The day started frosty. No snow but a thick frost due to the negative temperatures. Lucky we were in a nice motel unit with central heating. We drove to Bryce Canyon and marveled at the amputheature, full of many of rock towers littering the valley. Bryce has its own beauty but I don’t think it’s as spectacular as Zion or Yosemite, or maybe I am getting used to all this dramatic landscape. We drove over to capital reef national park and took the scenic drive which featured rocks which had been given names of the objects that they looked like. Then we took the scenic road to moab which wound along the plateau and through canyons and such. The place is a desert, the photographs describe it better. Utah is the Mormon state of the USA ... read more

Yay! We made it to Utah. The trip was good overall. No speeding tickets, but we forgot to bring CD's so we listen to the radio when we can get it in... We brought some snacks with us so we didn't have to stop too much along the way. I bought a commercially produced pickled egg somewhere in Idaho. It was the most horrible thing I have ever eaten. It was hard and tasted like beef jerky. yucky. We made it to SLC around noon on Saturday. After meeting Dan and Nannette and the kids for lunch, we headed to Bryce Canyon. We got there just as the sun went down, but it was still really beautiful. We then drove to Zion Natl Park and stayed the night. Today we'll do some hiking in Zion. ... read more

... read more

The past two days have certainly been chock full -o- scenic goodness! We left our campsite in Moab and made a stop in at Wicked Brew Coffee Drive Through to load up on our favorite caffeinated beverages before hitting the road. The highways we traveled through Utah had great views out every window. The speed limit was 75 and the roads were empty so between our many stops for pictures we were able make great time across the state (staying within the speed limit of course!). Our first stop on Tuesday was Goblin Valley State Park. The main features of this park are amazing mushroom-shaped rock formations that are referred to as “goblins.” Walking among them truly feels like navigating a martian landscape! We decided to brave the afternoon heat and sun for a quick 1.5 ... read more

And, apparently "The Best Fires On Earth". I slept under the glow from the blaze on Navajo Mountain. It was about 50 miles away and you could see the flames. From my understanding, that's a smaller one. Parts of Zion are closed and you can smell the smoke,as well as see it, from many miles away. It has been a very fun couple of days. I am staying at Bryce Canyon; at the historic Ruby Inn. It's just a stupid Best Western. Rented a White Toyota Camry. Not a bad little car. But I digress. Flew through Monument Valley on the way to Hall's Crossing Airport. It's ONLY ten miles from Lake Powell. Very hot and long bike ride. After sitting for a few minutes I decided to bike down to the ferry and take it ... read more

On our way in to Bryce we stopped at the Red Canyon. This wasn’t a planned stop it was just so beautiful we had to explore and take some pics. The rocks were the most brilliant, intense shade of red - enough to rival Ayres Rock. Bryce is only about 2 -3 hours from Zion. We arrived about lunch time and drove in. This park also had a shuttle but it didn’t run as frequently as at Zion and so we decided to take our car around. The parks are so big that driving around is necessary we weren’t just being lazy! As with Zion the early inhabitants were the American Indians and the Mormons. The place itself is named after a Mormon settler called Ebenezer Bryce who famously stated that the canyon was ‘a hell ... read more
