We forewarned they girls that today would involve a LOT of eating...and we were not wrong. First stop was brunch at Balthazar, a New York institution, so I’m told. In celebration, and really, just because, we kicked things off with a breakfast cocktail...cause, you know, it’s Christmas! Most indulgent breakfast enjoyed by all. Brisk walk to the Tenement Museum on the Lower East Side where we were taken on the Hard Times tour around 97 Orchard St to learn about the Gumpetz family who lived there, in three rooms, around the 1870s (along with 21 other families) and the Baldazzi family, around the 1930s. They have recreated their apartments to look as they would have and you are taken on an interactive tour with a small group. Really interesting very personal tour. Next stop, to complement ... read more

I may have to resort to bullet points today to cover all the activities/highlights of the last couple of days: - Brooklyn Bridge - originally set out with the ambitious target of walking across and then to the 911 memorial. But when it’s -8 with a wind whipping off the harbour, the first pylon serves for photos and a view of the Manhattan skyline, and well, the subway is warmer and doesn’t whinge. - 911 memorial - we had hesitations over taking the kids and we missed much of the museum part as it was ‘not recommended’ but we were really pleased we went, even it it was a sobering reminder of those events almost 20 years ago...and such a change in scenery from the last time I was here and the towers were still standing. ... read more

Cracked some amazing goals on our first day in NYC...some obvious and traditional, some not so much. The day started more or less as planned - a bit of grappling with the subway and tickets, Beeb whinging about the cold and a trip to the American Museum of Natural History. Checked off the obvious items like T-Rex and Blue Whale and caught a 3D movie about the ocean. Spent the requisite amount of negotiation time in the gift shop before heading for our first (!!!) hamburger and chips meal. Despite the clouds and breeziness, and against our better judgement, we dragged a semi-frozen whinging child to Central Park. Some feedback was provided, she was cold, she was miserable, didn’t I mention it was cold, and her face was cold...oh, and what was that, a squirrel. Wait, ... read more

United States of America, New York – December A Festive treat for me and Helen to experience Home Alone 2 in New York at Christmas :) Day 1, Tuesday 10th December 2019 We fly out of Gatwick and leave home around 3am, not much sleep that night, way too excited for the adventure! Empty roads and pretty quiet and quick to get through security, a good start so far and some Jamie's breakfast before the 7 hour flight. Boarded on the plane and its an near empty flight, which is crazy since we had to pay extra to get this flight and it wasn't available via any brokers, only direct via Norwegian Airways. Festive movies of choice for the flight: Home Alone 2, Elf and a few Simpsons Christmas episodes! It's over in a flash, we ... read more

Tom and I caught our flight from RDU to JFK and we headed to the skyclub to await our flight to Barcelona. Tom worked and I read. They had free champagne here so we celebrated our first major trip together with a glass (plastic but it was sparkling wine), Sorry HT gang, i still got my champagne tonight. Our trip is a "Taste of Barcelona". It is a short trip, but it should be fun. So, it was time to board our flight to BCN and we settled into our seats. Then the pilot said over the intercom, "sorry, we are having a mechanical problem and we need to fly the part in from Atlanta, everyone has to get off as it will take at least 2 hours." I suspect it will take more. Tom and ... read more

The day starts at 3:30 AM. Elinor doesn't think that we need to get up that early, but somehow she's not aware of how long it takes her to get ready in the morning. Any morning. She's just ready in time for the taxi (now called Riide which has in identical signup screen to Uber, but its still the local taxi companies). Oh yes, and Elinor had insisted on making a fruit salad to take with us and eat at the airport before going through security. That means that we're rushing to eat it (and not finish it) before getting in the long line for security. Turns out the long line moves along quickly, and we do have a few minutes to sit before they start boarding. Not rushed, but not sitting waiting, either. And quite ... read more

Hello, Hello, Hello Everyone! We have missed you! Lulu has been crying herself to sleep every night she has missed you so much. It’s so good to be back with all of you. Lulu’s eyes are glistening with joy right now. I can’t get that Cheshire grin off her face. I gave her a bath in our dishwasher this summer. She is so clean and perky now. Our summer has been filled with many, many things that I want to share with you. I can hear your familiar moans & wailing already. That’s okay. I realize I tend to get quite loquacious. I am who I am. Yep, it’s cozy chair & coffee time again. Put your phones on hold and let the reading begin. I really don’t know where to start. Hang with me as ... read more

My sister had returned from Seattle by the time we drove back through upstate New York, so we stayed at her place again. We also got to see my niece, who was visiting from Mexico City, which was a nice surprise. Edgar Martinez from the Seattle Mariners was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame this summer, so we stopped in Cooperstown to check out his exhibit. We also saw the plaques for Ken Griffey, Jr. and Randy Johnson, and some exhibits for Ichiro, including the Ichimeter (if you’re a Mariners fan, you’ll get it). He had 262 hits in 2004 (that’s about 1.6 hits a game, in 162 games), and over 200 hits in ten of his first eleven years with the Mariners. He should be in the Hall of Fame in a few years. ... read more

Day 14 We started the morning by going to the Guggenheim. When we were waiting at the train station to go there wegot a pretzel which had pepperoni and mozzarella which was really yummy. When we arrived we got an audio tour and started looking around the gallery. My favourite painting was a black one with colourful dots. After the gallery we went to walk in the climate strike. There were a lot of creative signs and a lot of different chants. We walked the strike with them but went onto the side walk when we were walking in the sun. Most of the time the buildings provided us with shade. After the strike we went to have lunch on 5th Avenue. I just had a bowl of chips because Dad didn’t give me enough time ... read more
