Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778Today was my first day of classes for the AACN's NTI 2016 Conference. Basically, 8,000-10,000 nurses from across the country descend on one city for continuing education (CE). In California, we have to have 30 hours CE every two years when we renew our licenses. For my Critical Care Certification, I have to have 100 hours CE every 3 years when I renew. So, big conferences like these are an excellent way to meet those requirements, as well as network, get up to date on technology and have fun in a new city.My very first class on Traumatic Brain Injuries ended up being one of my favorites (when I get home I'll do unit teaching on it). The nice thing about these classes is I can come and go when I want in between ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778Amazingly, we were up about 8am after having been up so late the night before. I had really wanted to do a traditional Southern Sunday Brunch but with timing of our kayaking tour we had to settle for breakfast. I had heard Stanley's was good, and it was actually open early enough, so we headed over to Jackson Square. Anna was hungover- I felt great surprisingly. We ended up getting Bloody Mary's- hair of the dog. Anna also ordered an oyster Po'Boy with some giant freakin oysters in it, and I had a Seafood Sampler platter with egg Benedict going on. I wasn't the biggest fan of all the fried but the soft shell fried crab was impressive. I've never eaten a crab shell like that! After breakfast we started getting sleepy from the heavy ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778My sister and I took separate flights to get here but we arrived only about 30min apart. We found each other in baggage claim and set out on our six days of sister vacation and conference time. We got lost right off the bat. I had little trouble navigating Japan public transportation but damned if we could find the bus stop at the airport. And we weren't about to pay full price for a cab or uber to the French Quarter. We finally just ambled outside and walked up to the first most public looking bus we saw, dragging our luggage behind us. The driver asked where we were headed, we said French Quarter and he said he'd get us there. No idea if this was the right bus but we got on! Turns ... read more

The drive from Loyd Park at Joe Pool Lake in Grand Prairie TX to Lapeyrouse Seafood Bar, Grocery & Campground in Chauvin LA was more than this camper was willing to tackle in a single day (about 10 ½ hours and 539 miles), so I made a stopover at the Kisatchie National Forest in Boyce LA at the Kincaid Lake Campground. I chose this facility for future reference and, definitely, not because of its convenient location. The entire trip went without any notable stories to convey. Apparently, there is a large construction project or some other such extravaganza going on in the Houma LA area, where my friends reside, that has the closer campgrounds filled to capacity with long-term campers. Construction workers, et. al., frequently travel as do I and take their home with them from ... read more

Trip Data: Holt, Florida – Lake Charles, LA – 417 miles The morning started off with a sinus headache from the sand covered swamp. Torrential rain all morning did not help the packing up procedure that in perfect dry conditions is no quick task. Visualize Mary Poppins in her raincoat when the canon goes off and everyone man’s their positions, floors clear, aerials down, gas off, things strapped down and doors latched before the walls slide in and we hold our breath until they are in. Add some wet sand on everything including the dogs and there you have it. Solid downpour from Florida through Alabama, Mississippi and half of Louisiana standing at every truckstop trying to get Moppy to poop, as she is very particular and doesn’t like to get her feet wet made for ... read more

Geo: 29.9537, -90.0778Weather: 65-70 sunny Hours: 0 Miles: 24 States: Louisiana University: Tulane Restaurant: Bubba Gumps Hotel: Residence Inn Metairie Movies: Car issues: What a great day. We woke to beautiful sunshine and blue skies. Great day to head to the Bayou to see some gators. No one seems overly excited to go on an airboat excursion. In their defense, no one really knew what it was. It was on my bucket list. I always thought it would be in the Everglades not in the Bayou of Louisiana in the Batateria Preserve. The weather was sunny and about 65/67. Warm in the sun but cool when speeding on the boat. Perfect day. We had a two hour tour on an airboat that traveled at high speeds on open water and through canals. Where there were alligators, ... read more

Our journey started sunny and bright, with temperatures in the low- to mid-80s. Daylight Saving Time had kicked in overnight so we gained back the hour we had lost yesterday. What?! We crossed the state border into Alabama but we were only there for the narrowest bit of the state, though we did stop at the Tourist Information rest-stop which was very nice but poorly provisioned as they couldn't accept cash there so I couldn't buy even a postcard to prove our presence. Oh well. I almost managed to snap a photo of the state sign, welcoming us in true Lynyrd Skynyrd style but a tree decided to just stand there at that very moment and spoil the shot, taken at speed from a moving vehicle. Again, oh well. I was becoming quite fascinated with all ... read more

It has been a while since I last put my thoughts down on paper. I thought my trip for spring break would be a good moment to pick it up again. At the moment of writing I am sitting in the lounge of my hostel. I just unpacked all my stuff and got my self familiar with the place. The hostel I am staying at (The Atlas House) is in a quiet neighborhood in New Orleans. The conditions under which I am travelling are far from ideal though. It seems like I have caught a cold last week, which results in my throat burning every time I swallow and more importantly; sleepless nights. However, I don’t let it get me down. This morning I woke up early to get some pancakes for breakfast. When I walked ... read more

I am sitting in a airport after leaving New Orlens - at the same time as I left I had some sad news from home...my loyal gentle 3 legged cat Gypsy who has been by my side for 11 years passed away from kidney failure. So my heart is breaking on many levels and can't call home due to the time difference. I know this is supposed to be all about my last moments in New Orleans but that piece of news is fresh in my mind and heart and I wanted to spend a moment to honour her beautiful memory. Mardi Gras is over and the streets have cleared - somehow it seems strange to walk along Canal street and not have beads thrown at my head...isn't that a strange thing to consider normal! Just ... read more

Hi everyone We thought that our trip to New Orleans deserved a blog of its own as it is really like nowhere else during Mardi Gras!! We didn't really know too much about it or what to expect in the way of parades but we have to say that all our expectations have been well and truly exceeded. There is a build up to Mardi Gras that takes place in the city from the beginning of January with various parades that are organised by 'Krewes' which are different groups that theme their parades and organise all their own floats and routes. They take place all over the city but usually end in the historic French quarter. The Krewes have pre parade parties and end of parade parties and the whole parade is a big party!! Mardi ... read more
