I am sitting in a airport after leaving New Orlens - at the same time as I left I had some sad news from home...my loyal gentle 3 legged cat Gypsy who has been by my side for 11 years passed away from kidney failure. So my heart is breaking on many levels and can't call home due to the time difference. I know this is supposed to be all about my last moments in New Orleans but that piece of news is fresh in my mind and heart and I wanted to spend a moment to honour her beautiful memory.
Mardi Gras is over and the streets have cleared - somehow it seems strange to walk along Canal street and not have beads thrown at my head...isn't that a strange thing to consider normal! Just as the city gets back into it's normal flow preparations begin for jazz fest - the festivities never end here - unfortunately I will miss the jazz fest and will be onto other adventures.
I spent my last week enjoying the city and relaxing by the river - many a sunny afternoon was spent sitting in the sun by
the river reading a book. It was nice to stop and relax after a hectic few weeks. I did find time to get onto a paddle steamer and cruise the mississippi...it was a nice cruise with a great view of the city, even if it was a bit windy and raining - I still stood at the front of the boat to get a photo with the city view!! I'm dedicated to a good photo ;-)
On my last night and to celebrate my birthday my friends took me out to a club in the west of New Orleans. It was a black club and I was one of only 2 white people...and being 6'2" it goes without saying that I garnered a bit of attention for myself!! I jumped onto the dancefloor (I know you are all shocked and surprised by this) and my new dance buddies tried to teach me their line dancing style...I came close to getting it right and did lot better than I think any of us were expecting. At one stage on the dance floor I found myself lit up and realised someone was recording me...I'm sure it was because of
my amazing dancing skills...right?!?! RIGHT?!?! Well I've googled funny white girl who thinks she can dance and I haven't come up so don't think I am a you tube sensation just yet.
It was an awesome night with good friends and a great way to send off New Orleans. It was an early start the next day and I just made it to the plane - I say good-bye to NOLA - it has been a blast. I had a stop off in New York and got a good photo of the city scape from the plane, unfortunately this is all I saw of the city this time around...then after a shorter than expected stop off in AbuDhabi and a run for the plane I was arriving in Kathmandu Nepal.
I know there wasn't a lot on this update but I have to say it was a quieter than usual week of just enjoying the city of New Orleans. Don't worry I can assure you all the next update from Nepal will be more than interesting!!
