It’s never raises more than a few feet above the water. It’s straight as an arrow. The fact still remains; Pontchartrain Causeway is the longest bridge in the world. 25 miles of bridge between Metairie and Mandeville in Louisiana. One might think that this would be an interesting ride. The fact is, it’s probably hard to find a less interesting ride. Look to your left, there is water a few feet down. Look to your right, there’s water a few feet down. Look in front of you, there’s probably a car. It seems unlikely that anyone would drive off the bridge and into the water. But it happens, most likely out of boredom. Many make this trip twice a day, as a step in going to and from work. Can somebody please explain the beauty of ... read more

Subletting the apartment for the summer seemed to be a great idea. Most of my rent would be absorbed, and the temporary tenant would get a nice and quiet place at a reduced price. His name was Russell. American guy, in his 40's, calm and quiet, drink- and smoke free, riding around New Orleans on his bicycle. Wouldn't cause any trouble with the apartment complex manager, would keep a very low profile. According to our written contract, he would leave upon my return. So far so good. The summer went by, and I returned. This is when I realize that Russell is still there, seemingly with no intention of moving out. One might think that it was obvious enough that my roomie and me were living there, preferably alone. Not so. Russell would not leave. The ... read more

"I got my first real six-string. Bought it at the five-and-dime. Played it til my fingers bled. It was the summer of 69." Those opening lines from the opening act more or less guarantee a good show. Especially since they come from the person who came up with the whole concept of singing about his careless, happy youth, back in 1969. Linda Perry, you know the What's Up girl, served as a crowd-starter. Pretty good choice, but the main performer can carry his own show. There are only two persons during the whole show at the rather small stage at the House of Blues. Bryan and his base player Scott. They both wear jeans and white t-shirts. Nothing fancy, just pure rock-n-roll. The way it was meant to be. Mr. Adams sure as hell is no ... read more

We were all moving slow this morning. We started our journey to Louisianna. Started getting really warm and remembverd that we still had no ac in the car. We were at the edge of the french quarters. We decided the first day to walk down canal street which is the main street and borders the one side of the french quarters. Not very impressed on our first site. Very poor-very dirty. We didn't really know where we wanted to go so we turned back and headed back up to the Radisson. Didn't look like a street we should be on after dark. GOt back to the hotel and caught a shuttle back down to the french quarters. We couldn't have gotten on the quarter by going left of canal street. Too bad we didn't know that ... read more

Geo: 30.0479, -90.3041Great mad place, knew no one there but just had to go. Stayed in a really American motel - we were the only whites in the local taek way though. French quarter & Jackson Sq. & markets were great. Bourbon ST was nuts - cocktails very strong. Voodoo shops kitschy. There's no streetcar named Desire though. And I remember they had a pretty good Aquarium in Garden district in Charles ST.... read more

So, our hiatus from traveling drags interminably on. Meanwhile Ali is back in the UK visiting relatives and my co-blogger - for a carp fishing magazine – has just written an introduction to the up-coming “season” with an article detailing our back stories (reasoning that if Marvel and D.C. Comics can get away with it, again, and again…). Thus what’s a bored frustrated wannabe traveler to do? Seems a back story… Somewhat smug with 25 years of backpacking experience behind us it did make me titter (and cringe) to re-read our old diaries and see quite how clueless we once were: December 1989. Vicar Lane bus station, Leeds. Brian called over his shoulder as he waddled towards the Skipton-bound bus that he’d be driving. “Manager wants to see you int’ office”. Shit. I slid off the ... read more
A mere corner of my old domain: Vicar Lane bus station (long since demised).
The Chemic, Hyde Park Corner in Leeds: where backpacking first reared its magnificent head
