I am physically in England, but my head is so in BR right now. I've been couped up in the library writing for class...actually I've been reading play for play of the LSU game. It sounds like it was awesomeeee. I miss you guys so much! But that's okay, we can all watch the National Championship game together in January. Bad night in Brighton: Last night I went out in Brighton with my friend Laura and her friend from Wales and my friend Ashley. Firstly, the girl from Wales says "cunt" alot, and she noticed I was cringing. She thought it hilarious to call me that all night....god that was so vulgar. Anyway, we were on the bus, and these French guys in the seats behind us were trying to hit on us and talking about ... read more

0800 At the P-Mac. Turns out, not needed last night at Kmart General Hospital. SB (our team leader) spent the majority of the day talking with the many chiefs. It seemed that our services were best needed as relief for the teams who had been working at P Mac and the field house since the hurricane. Once here, bureaucratic chaos reigns. Far too many chiefs. The field house is changing from acute care to extended care facility status. We did a quick census and found about 4-5 patients that met "inpatient" criteria: mostly for IV antibiotics. We set up two physicians there and the rest of the crew went to the P Mac to take over. The public health service and emergency response team in place did not want to relinquish the site. They had been ... read more

09-05-2005 1830 Headed to the Field House and Pete Maravich (P-Mac) Arena at LSU, where all the action seems to be. Last night at Kmart was very quiet after midnight. A few patients trickled in. Not much action and spent the greater part walking around trying to stay awake. After our shift, WS and I stayed with a wonderful retired couple in Zachary, just north of Baton Rouge. A shower and 8 great hours of sleep. Shrimp creole for breakfast/ dinner.... read more

09-03-2005 (about 11 am): After spending the morning mountain biking with friends, I received a call from one of my anesthesia attendings: We are putting together a medical response team to offer aid following the disaster from Hurricane Katrina, he said. Would I like to be apart of the team? I had seen the images on TV, the destruction, the hopelessness, the lack of food, shelter, medical care. The locations in south Louisiana, and Mississippi were familiar; it was where I grew up. Of course I wanted to be a part of the team, but I couldn't just abandon residency for two weeks. It's all taken care of, I am told. I thought I was recruited because of my familiarity with the location. It was, actually, because I had trained in internal medicine before anesthesia. That ... read more

Welcome, Thanks for dropping in. I'll probably be using this just as an update of what's going on....which I'm sure will prove to be terribly interesting. Actually, you'll probably stop reading after this blog because it says nothing. Anyway, if you should feel so inclined, check in every now and then to read about my sitting alone in a dorm room for 3 1/2 months. Just kidding. I promise it will be entertaining. -Julie P.S. Feel free to comment. Say anything. I am going to miss everyone alot, so any word I hear from home will be awesome.... read more

Well we've been doing so much stuff that there has been no chance whatsoever to do any updating! So this is the first of a few entries! We caught a train from Memphis to New Orleans which took 10 hours - not a bad journey considering the duration although we both felt rather crazy toward the end! N'awlins (as it's pronounced) is a strange place: the humidity is extreme to say the least. We are staying in the French Quarter which is ridiculously expensive (good a good deal on digs from the UK) We have been sampling such culinary delights as Wendy's Hamburgers and SUBWAY!!! We did a graveyard tour which was morbid but very interesting as N'awlins is 3-4 feet below sea level so the graves are more like tombs built on the ground rather ... read more

With about 2 weeks left in New Orleans, we have finally decided to put forth some effort to get this blog up and running. Thus, if you received an email directing you to this site, consider yourself officially in the “test group” to make sure we’ve got everything running smoothly… As you all probably know, Sean and I are planning to take approximately 15 months “off” and do something that we’ve been planning for about five years - travel around the world. In general terms, the plan is to vacate our apartment in New Orleans at the end of August and spend the month of September in the Pacific Northwest with our families before leaving for Central and South America around October 1st. We plan to travel in South America until Christmas, when we will be ... read more

A while has passed since last i wrote, and I apologise for my lazyness. Much can be said, as much has been experienced during the passing month and a half. However, many of my experiences have been rather inexplainable and I have had feelings inside me that I feel deifficult to describe. Since last I wrote I went to the lovely islands of Fiji. Beautiful with it's white sand, azur clear blue water and friendly people greeting me "bula" and offering me cava, the traditional drink made from a root. Although expensive, I found myself enjoying the quaint islands and the laidback, easygoing people. But island hopping can only be done in a certain amount, and 10 days later I was ready to hop on the plane that took me from Nadi airport to Los Angeles, ... read more
