It has been a while since I last put my thoughts down on paper. I thought my trip for spring break would be a good moment to pick it up again.
At the moment of writing I am sitting in the lounge of my hostel. I just unpacked all my stuff and got my self familiar with the place. The hostel I am staying at (The Atlas House) is in a quiet neighborhood in New Orleans. The conditions under which I am travelling are far from ideal though. It seems like I have caught a cold last week, which results in my throat burning every time I swallow and more importantly; sleepless nights. However, I don’t let it get me down.
This morning I woke up early to get some pancakes for breakfast. When I walked into the kitchen I saw that Freddie was already baking some, and he handed me a plate. He recognized me immediately as the Dutch guy who had the late check-in the night before. While I was eating my breakfast I met Jay and Ramona. Both of them were international students, and here in New Orleans on a trip before they would be heading
home to France and Germany again. They invited me to come with them to explore the garden district and afterwards go to the park.
When walking through New Orleans, I realized what a magnificent city it was. It seemed as if time had stood still there. All the houses were of the old colonial style, and all had their complete own identity. After walking for a couple of hours through the streets of the garden district and through Lafayette Cemetery, we decided to take a quick break in the Audubon Park. As time slowly progressed, we were starting to feel hungrier and started to look for a place to grab some food. This became quite the challenge; the area where we were, appeared to be one of the very rare locations in the United States where you could not find any establishments to fulfill your dietary needs.
After we found a small restaurant, we headed back to the hostel for a well-deserved nap. The more time I spend here, the more energized I start to feel. This is exactly what I love about travelling: Meeting new people every day, surround yourself in foreign cultures, and surroundings. Every step
you take feels like a new adventure. Tomorrow, Jay and I are taking a ‘voodoo-tour’, which apparently is a very important influence in the city of NOLA (New Orleans of Louisiana). I hope that my cold will start its retreat tonight, so I will have enough energy to make the most of my time here. Because for the afternoon Niek, a Dutch resident of this hostel, has invited me to join him visiting a comedy club.
I have only barely been here for a day, and already met so many wonderful people. I can’t wait to find out what the future has in store for me!
