It has been a while since I last put my thoughts down on paper. I thought my trip for spring break would be a good moment to pick it up again. At the moment of writing I am sitting in the lounge of my hostel. I just unpacked all my stuff and got my self familiar with the place. The hostel I am staying at (The Atlas House) is in a quiet neighborhood in New Orleans. The conditions under which I am travelling are far from ideal though. It seems like I have caught a cold last week, which results in my throat burning every time I swallow and more importantly; sleepless nights. However, I don’t let it get me down. This morning I woke up early to get some pancakes for breakfast. When I walked ... read more

The first days here in Davenport are already behind me and so far it has been a great experience. Let me take you through my experiences here so far. When I stepped foot outside of the airport the difference in weather was obvious. I felt the need to put on a jacket to harm me against the cold breeze and the light drizzle. The taxi driver, taking me to the hotel told me that it took him a couple of months to adjust to the weather when he arrived. I feel for him, being a South-African in a place where the winters are amongst one of the coldest of the entire States. The drive to the hotel was a lot longer than I anticipated. A herald for what I was about to find out. The distances ... read more

After a memorable weekend of partying and saying goodbye to my friends, the time has finally come to depart. At 7AM my alarm went off reminding me of the last things I had to pack before leaving the house. It sounds like a cliché but the last days really went by so fast. To be frank with you, I barely realised what I was going to do. Still at this moment, it hasn’t completely sunken in. Being on the airport always gives me a great feeling. You know that you’re heading for adventure. This time felt a little different. Sure, I’m looking forward to the new experiences and amazing people I will encounter but somewhere deep inside, it feels like I also leave something behind. The last couple of days have been so good to me ... read more

Hello Everyone! I'm back to share more of my adventures with you all! I am afraid I have to make a small apology to everyone since there was a small error in my previous blog. Since the day after the motorbike ride we were not going on an second four island tour, this was a few days later! Today I am going to tell you about another trip of ours, a kayak trip through the Mangroves of Krabi. It was a half day trip which only started in the afternoon. We weren't actually planning on doing anything today so we had a lay-in and decided to take it easy. In the afternoon we were heading for the reception to plan a trip for the day after and the girl at the reception told us about this ... read more

After our first experiences with the trips in Thailand in Krabi town we set of to Ao Nang. A bit more beach oriented town. In a way it reminded a bit of Phuket, only without the negative sides. You could see it was a strongly tourism oriented town but because of the green season (a way of saying the low season the Thai prefer) a lot of small bars were closed or cleaning up for a long-term close. We received a warm welcome by the Italian owner of our hostel url=http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g1507054-d1449953-Reviews-3_Bees_Guesthouse-Ao_Nang_Krabi_Town_Krabi_Province.html3 Bees Guesthouse. He immediately offered to book all sorts of trips for us and also asked if we were interested in renting a motor bike. This last thing got my special attention. I never really drove a motorbike before and nor did Wanda, but coming ... read more

Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket June 10th 2013

Hello everyone once again! My last blog update finished quite suddenly so I will continue about Phuket and the rest of the west coast now. Because we were rather lazy and it seemed rather cheap, me and Wanda decided to take the plane to Phuket. Upon arrival we had to face the usual "Sorry, taxi meter no work"-scam. After a short search we found a mini-van drover who was willing to take us to our hostel for a reasonable price. When we arrived at our hotel we took a short rest and went to look for a place to get some dinner. We quickly realized that this was one of the most touristic places we have visited so far, and probably would visit at all. Just as Khao San Road in Bangkok, Phuket is a fun ... read more

Hello everyone! I am sincerely sorry but it has been quite a while since my last blog update.. Due to circumstances I wasn't able to update my blog as often as I wanted. The last time I told everyone about Wanda's arrival in Bangkok. That night we did explore the world renown Khao San Road. What can I say.. It was as great as it was horrible.. Everywhere people are trying to sell you their merchandise or services. You can't take two steps without someone pulling your arm if you want to have a hand-tailored suit or a tuk-tuk ride. That being said, it was a lot of fun walking around in his chaotic tourist heaven. From every club came loud music and the food all the stalls were selling looked mouth drippingly good! Hello everyone! Today I finally picked up Wanda from the airport. I already arrived yesterday here in Bangkok and I must say it is quite the experience! Upon arrival for me it was about 5 o'clock and I took an hour long cab ride to the hostel Wanda already booked for the two of us. The guy didn't turn on the meter but I was too tired to say anything about it. It costed me 400 baht.. The personnel in the hostel we're really kind and showed me everything. The room is a small room, just big enough to fit two beds. I already decided for myself that I was going to spend as little time as possible on the room. So after a short refreshing shower I walked into the city and started exploring the ... read more

Hello everyone! This is the first time I've ever written a blog. This year I will travel for over half a year to south-east Asia and probably have the time of my life! For 10 weeks I will do voluntary work in Borneo with Raleigh! Probably I won't be able to send updates quite as often as I am able to do now, so to always be acquainted with the latest updates om our progress in Borneo, I reccomend all of you to keep an eye on http://raleighborneo.blogspot.nl/ At the moment I am very busy with preparing for the journey. I believe I have gathered most of my gear and documents. Allthough I still need to make a checklist of everything I need to bring, I think I am well on my way! Today was the ... read more
