Unfortunately, Dan & Marilyn's trip had to be cut a couple days short for family reasons. So Tuesday was their last day here and their flight departs at 10:30 PM. And, we had bad luck with the weather again. It rained all day. The second such day on the whole trip, but we have had a lot of amazingly beautiful days. We left early for the airport because the last rainy day the one highway across the island was jammed with traffic. We took advantage of leaving early by driving to the quaint town of Paia to have our farewell dinner at Charley's. It's one of my favorite places on the island, right on the road to Hana and near the Haleakala volcano. It's also one of Willie Nelson's favorites, too. He has an upcountry ranch ... read more

Monday Dan and I had another tee time at another golf course, the Royal Kaanapali. Marilyn and Jan chose to take glass blowing lessons at a place called Moana Glass and create their own keepsake of their Maui trip. Make sure you check out the photos to see their finished products. We had perfect weather for golf and were paired up with a couple real nice guys, one from the Yakima Valley in Washington and one from Palm Springs. It was also nice that we were all about the same skill level. It was an up and down match, with me winning the first 9 holes and Dan winning the second nine holes handily. I did manage to squeak out winning the 18 hole game, though. By Marilyn: Off to Moana Glass Company for a lesson ... read more

All four of us enjoyed the whale watching we did in the past. If I haven't mentioned it before, We went to Hawaii together in 2009. So this is the second time the four of us have been on Maui together. Jan and I said that any time we go to Maui, we would do a whale watching cruise. Our cruise was with the Pacific Whale Foundation and all of their proceeds go to the preservation of the whales. The vast majority of the whales here near Maui are Humpback Whales. These whales spend their summers near Alaska where they feed like crazy and the winter here in the Hawaiian waters where they mate and have their calves. These whales are approximately 45 tons and about 45 feet in length. We were told that while nursing ... read more

Yesterday after enjoying the waves and rainbows from our lanai all morning and enjoying a nice breakfast cooked by Marilyn, we worked up the energy to go down to the pool and lie around there soaking up some sun. I guess we deserved a lazy day. The weather was gorgeous, 78 and sunny, nice for lying around. The big motivation for this day was to go to downtown Lahaina for dinner at the original Cheeseburger in Paradise. Lahaina is an old, historic whaling town and picturesque. We sat upstairs in the open air with a great view of the old whaling docks and sea. The next day Dan and I had a tee time at the Kapalua Golf Course and Marilyn and Jan were going to do a zipline. We had a great breakfast at the ... read more

Dateline: October 31, 2018, Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii Halloween Parade, Thai Noodles and a Movie Originally, we were going to rent a car and see some of the island but… we just found our that they will be closing down streets in Lahaina about 2pm for the Halloween Parade. So…we opt to just walk around Lahaina for the day. Today is the hottest we’ve been on this trip, about 82 degrees with 90% humidity. 100 of us sweating passengers with frizzy hair, are tendered into shore on each boat, arriving 20 minutes later right at Banyan Park. Banyan Park is unbelievably beautiful with one very old Banyan tree reaching out it it’s ropy tentacles from large branches to make more Banyan trees, all interconnected. There are a lot of cute shops and restaurants but we opt to ... read more

Blog 35 Lahaina, Hawai’i, April 29, 2018 – Weather forecast: partly sunny; humidity 71%, temperature 23°C, wind 8kts (3 Beaufort) – on crater’s edge experienced heavy fog, 30kts wind and rain/sleet Overnight the ship moved from the island of Oahu eastward to the island of Maui where we anchored off shore adjacent to Lahaina. This is our last time on this voyage that we have to use the tenders to get ashore as there is no pier large enough for ships. Lahaina’s history is tied to the whaling industry of the 19th century, early Christian missionaries, sugar plantations, and now tourists. The stunning scenery, crystal clear calm waters and the myriad of animals, fish and turtles all blend together to attract tourists to the area. Once ashore we waited for our minibus near Banyan Tree Square, ... read more

The day started off slowly and we spent a good time laying in bed with the kids and having breakfast in the room. They have somewhat adapted to the time change and are waking up at 5:30 am. which is much more manageable than 4. Tory and Steve and the kids headed down to the greenbelt at the edge of the resort and played some golf so RoRo and Nathan could get some energy out running. Steve and RoRo headed up to the room for naps and Nathan and Tory walked down to the neighboring Westin resort, the Nanea, to explore their pool area. Nathan had a blast running through the splashpad, going down the waterslide and playing in the water gun area. He became increasingly brave and even liked going down the waterslide himself. Day 11 Today was our Day of hanging out and relaxing. Enjoying a buffet breakfast we changed into our bathing gear and headed to the beach. I wanted to mermaid today so I had my tail fin and attempted to put it on in the water. The shore break made this a slightly difficult task and I'm sure that I did not look like a graceful mermaid in the slightest. Once in the ocean I froliked in the water and a little girl dragged her mum over to see a " real" mermaid, cute. When I tried to get out of the water the waves dragged me back and I rolled in. Kym was in fits of laughter and wished he had the video camera to film me tumbling back in the ocean. We moved up ... read more

Day 10 Woke up feeling sore in my thighs, can't imagine how I would have felt if I had done the whole 12 mile volcano walk the day before ? The hostel supplied a breakfast of coffee and pancakes, after eating we took a Lyft (like Uber) to the airport to pick up our rental car. We had trouble getting an Uber as our bank was an Australian bank but Lyft worked fine. We couldnt get a Lyft or Uber from the airport as they are technically "not allowed" to go there but we were given a tip to move your "pin" outside of the airport then give the driver a call to pick you up from inside...good to know for next time. We picked up our rental car.. ok not as cool as our last ... read more

We awoke this morning with some trepidation; because, we’d been “invited” to a “free breakfast” for guest on their first morning at the Royal Kahuna. We know what it means to be invited to a “free breakfast” at a Wyndham resort, something we do our best to avoid, if we can. They referred to this as a “free breakfast and orientation” which could mean anything. Before going down to the lobby, we spent some time on the balcony. As on cruises, in fact as we do each day, Sharon and I enjoy our Daily Sudoku Challenge. On cruise ships, they used to be pretty good about putting out two daily puzzles, and Easy and a Hard one. We use the Enjoy Sudoku app to do the daily challenge. The app is free; although, there is a ... read more
