Since there is little “rush hour” traffic in the Sanford FL area, I got a relatively early departure from the Clark Family Campground in Orange City FL in hopes of avoiding school bus stoppages on the two lane roads leading to I-75. Although the drive to the Albany RV Resort in Albany GA (population 77,434 at the 2010 U.S. Census) was slightly longer than I prefer, about 325 miles and 6 ½ hours, the trip was uneventful. On the way to the coin laundry on Friday, I spotted a sign for tourist information, rounded the corner and made a stop. Dressed in my “I ain’t doin’ nothin’ fancy today” clothes, I learned the Ray Charles Plaza, which was on my list of attractions, was downstream one block (they both are located on the bank of the ... read more

Thursday March 31,2016 =================== Awoke from a good night sleep in Pooler,GA outside Savannah. Showered and had breakfast and got my suitcase and other bags ready to put into the car. Checked out of the hotel and drove toward Wormsloe Historic Site just outside of Savannah,GA Wormsloe: Historic Colonial Plantation and Estate which began in 1702 until 1775. Amazing oaks,,grounds, trees and buildings which has been preserved beautifully by the state of Georgia. Wonderful historic site!!! After that site, drove towards Darien,GA to see King Fort George which is the oldest British Fort which is from 1721 until 1736. Awesome Fort !! Hot and muggy today but excellent historic site as well. I would highly recommend coming down to Darien and walking around the Fort, for yourself. Drove several hours today but saw beautiful Coa... read more

Wednesday March 30,2016 ===================== Slowly got out of bed, showered and had breakfast this morning in Walterboro,SC. Around 9:15 am, got into the car and checked out of the hotel and I put my bag together for the day. Arrived in Savannah,GA around 10:30 am and walked into the Visitor's Center. Found out that there was Fort and Battlefield nearby which we were able to walk to from the center. The Battlefield- Memorial for the hundreds who fought and died for freedom on October 9,1779 in Savannah,GA. 8,000 troops of three armies fought during the Revolutionary War Battle of Savannah. 2,500 British troops faced 5,500 French and American troops- Soldiers from Haiti,Germany,Scotland,Ireland,Sweden and Poland took part in the fighting. Had a good night sleep in our big 4 post bed (almost needed a ladder to climb into it). Had breakfast downstairs in the dining room with 2 other couples who were from Orlando and another couple from Charlotte. They had been here for a while and were going home today (Sunday). They served us eggs florentine which looked like a quiche, a muffin, croissant and OJ and a raspberry type of desert. All pretty good. The weather started cloudy with a slight shower and pretty cool around 16 degrees, so we decided to use the car for a drive around Savannah’s Historical District. Kerry kept popping out for a photo as we slowly drove around. The best spots were the beautiful homes on Jones Street. We stopped for a coffee at the same café we ... read more

Up nice and early around 7.30am and got the bags all packed up again, and headed downstairs for breakfast before we made the walk up Peachtree Street to the Hertz Depot to pick up our hire car. I had charged Mr. Tom Tom that Bruce had kindly lent me but I was getting concerned as I could not switch it over to US Maps (it was still on Australian maps). I figured it was because we were indoors so I took it with me as we walked to the Hertz depot hoping it would spring to life. It did not ! OMG how am I going to find my way around now ? Anyway we got to the Hertz depot and I showed him the printout of my reservation and I could not believe it but ... read more

Alarms were set for 7am as we had to get to our first booked tour. We have a cooked breakfast buffet at the Best Western Plus which was pretty reasonable selection and everything was pretty fresh. I had Scrambled Eggs on toast with a sausage shaped like beef patty, blueberry yoghurt, muffin, and a pancake with maple syrup that I made myself in this fancy machine in 1 minute. All you do is put down a plate and press start and here it comes. Not real tasty and then Kerry said the next person’s was twice the size as mine (I guess I just warmed the machine up for them !). Kerry had more sense and had some healthier options. Next we headed off to the CNN Centre via Centennial Park which was built for the ... read more

Up at 3am and ready to head back to LAX for our flight to our next destination Atlanta in Georgia. It has been almost 24 hours since we arrived and I miss flying ! Well we both agreed the beds at 4 Points Sheraton LAX were amazingly comfortable. Shame we only got half a night to sleep there. Will be back here again no doubt as they allow you to check in for 24 hours from your actual arrival (i.e. arrive at 7am and stay until 7am and only pay for 1 night stay). Only 10 minutes to LAX with free hotel shuttle so good for connections. Anyway we got to the Airport and check in was a breeze. In fact with Southwest Airlines you print up your own baggage labels and stick them on yourself ... read more

Kayak and moving Happy Birthday Lisa Friday was the day I was going to get out on the river. There was so much going on all week that I just didn't have time but today was the day. I walked with Oscar over to the river to decide where I would put the kayak in and where to park the van. The spot scoped out and home I went to inflate the kayak and get myself dressed in shorts and my water shoes. The spot I had planned to park the van was now taken so I put the kayak on the bank, drove back to my site and left the van and walked back to the river. Getting in was easier than I anticipated and off I was floating on the river. I headed upstream ... read more

As we sit at the Tybee Island RV Park the 30 Jan date that we had originally planned for our departure has finally arrived. We never imagined that we would already be 9 days into our trip by then. Fortunately we found a great little RV park run by the city and had a chance to visit Savannah just 13 miles up the road. What a great city with a lot of history. Much like Charleston the city is steeped in both Revolutionary and Civil war history except that Savannah did not get burned to the ground like Charleston did so much of the old original town exist to this day and they have done a great job of preserving the homes and gardens. The riding/walking tour allowed us to get off the bus at any ... read more
