Crooked River State Park, St. Mary's, Georgia We didn't need to go anywhere yesterday, so we didn't - it was a down-day in Georgia. Slept in to start the day, which is always good. Spent a fair chunk of time catching up on my posts. Was not able to write the day we went to Canaveral, and the Verizon service was so poor I couldn't post what I was able to write. So spent yesterday writing about Canaveral and the Forts and then populated the posts with some of the better pictures. That took more time than I wanted it too and I didn't get a nap in, which is supposed to be a key part of a down-day. We also ended up doing four or five loads of laundry. We are finding that the humidity ... read more

Crooked River State Park, St. Mary, Georgia It was a short drive for us - less than a hundred miles. We headed north on Interstate 95, looped around Jacksonville, said our goodbyes to Florida, and crossed the state line into Georgia. Got off at mile marker 3 and proceeded to Crooked River State Park. If Faver Dykes in Florida was the wild side, Crooked River has it all tamed. Vegetation is the same, but the campsites in this park are all manicured and they are huge, probably designed for big motor homes. They have a miniature golf course here and a visitor center with rocking chairs on the porch. There is a sign advertising a sunset boat ride on Friday which we just might join. This is a State Park designed to just lay back and ... read more

Travels with Snowbirds, Quest for the Stamp, April 15, 2017, Wilmington NC to Madison GA How's this for a grabber opener. I am in the Deep South, I'm a campground, and hear rifle fire. Welcome readers! I am so excited. This is the trip I have been planning for about a year and it’s finally here. My camping girlies, Kathy, Ginnie, and Kim, planned this long road trip around visiting National Parks in the middle of the country, and getting our National Park Passports stamped as many places as we could. We threw out names of places we wanted to visit and plotted a course. The official trip starts 4/20 in Natchez, MS. I left home today as there are places along my route that I want to see. Kathy had to beg off the trip ... read more

Mrs H and I never turn our nose up at the chance of an adventure providing the adventure does not include bungee jumping, sky diving, scuba diving, pot holing or walking briskly uphill!! For this reason, most of our adventures usually involve a ship of some description. If we had known what was in store for us within the first twenty-four hours of setting off across the Atlantic we may have booked a different route altogether for this was an adventure that if given the choice, we would not have picked even though there was not a bungee rope or an aqualung in sight!! As you've probably guessed, we've set off on another cruise that will see us sail from Fort Lauderdale across the Atlantic calling at Ponta del Garda in the Azores, Lisbon, Bilbao, Le ... read more

Biking Peachtree City, Georgia. Until a few days before we arrived, we had never heard of Peachtree City. While on a month-long biking trip we were looking ahead for a place to bike in Georgia before we arrived at the Silver Comet Trail. Peachtree City has a population of about 35 000 and is about 50 km SW of Atlanta so it is most likely a bedroom community. What impressed us was the fact that the city claims to have 145 km of paved pathways. They are mostly used by people with golf carts who can travel almost anywhere within the city. Many establishments have dedicated parking for golf carts and we were told that the local high school parking lot is full of golf carts since students able to drive golf carts on the trails ... read more

... read more

Ocmulgee National Monument, Macon, Georgia If Russell Cave was a bit of a disappointment, Ocmulgee definitely was not. Ocmulgee is the name of a river that runs through here, and a thousand years ago the Indians built a very complex settlement. They were part of a civilization known as Mississippian, scattered through the south, but concentrated along tributaries of the Mississippi River as far north as Iowa, Illinois, and Ohio. They built huge earthen mounds, as large as football fields and as tall as fifty feet. Mostly, these mounds served as platforms, possibly as locations for other grand structures, such as temples or the homes of the elite. One of these mounds, the funeral mound here at Ocmulgee, served as a cemetery. It has been a rich source of artifacts for archeologists. In addition to the ... read more
