Geo: 33.7481, -84.3909We drove from Meridian to Atlanta today stopping in Birmingham at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to learn more about what was happening in the South while we were children. We also saw the 16th Street Baptist Church that was bombed in 1963 killing four girls attending Sunday School. The museum is beautifully crafted and does a great job of explaining all the parts of the civil rights struggles of the 20th century. Near the end of the self-guided tour, one of the docents pointed out a photo from March 2007 that she was particularly fond of with then Senator Barack Obama pushing Fred Shuttlesworth in his wheelchair across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma while Bill Clinton stops to talk to him. We arrived in Atlanta before rush hour started but the roads ... read more

Hi Friends and Family, On May 4, 2008 I wrote and circulated my first travel blog. We were about to travel to Europe for a six-week adventure, our longest vacation ever. After returning, I learned that I could use my blogs to create a personal travel book. It worked wonderfully. As we age I find it relaxing to break out the book and flip through the pages rather than to log in here to see what I wrote or to scan through thousands of photos trying to remember where we were when they were taken. My last blog was dated August 6, 2012. It was my 105th entry with a total of 1,251 photos. It was our last day in Paris with a photo of the Eiffel Tower. We have done some travel since but I ... read more

Our last morning in Savannah. There were still a couple of things that we wanted to do, so instead of heading in the direction of Charleston, our next destination, we spent some time in Savannah seeing and eating what we hadn't been able to so far. To be honest, while I have liked Savannah, it didn't wow me like New Orleans did. It definitely grew on me, but the city just didn't captivate me in the way New Orleans did. Maybe if we had visited here first, I would feel differently. We were up pretty early and got the car packed up. We were back on the move again. At least for the rest of my trip, I will only move twice more before flying out. I am getting a little tired of being on the ... read more

It was an early start as we were heading over to Tybee Island to explore that area today. We got to the kayak place pretty early, I think we were one of the first cars there. We just stood chilling outside until everyone was there and it was time to get sorted with our kayaks. After a short introductory walk we were kitted out with what we needed and piled into their van. It was a short drive to the place where we would begin our kayaking. hr tour lasted for about three hours and was really fun. When we first left we headed out into the sea and the water was a bit rough. I was a million miles away from the rest of the group and drifting in the wrong direction. One of the ... read more

Another day to explore Savannah. We headed into the downtown area and decided to get one of the trolley sightseeing buses, as it would give us a chance to see more of the city and decided which places of interest we would like to visit. I think there are a couple of companies in operation. We headed to the depot where the trolley bus starts from, I think it was near the Savannah History Museum that we had visited the day before. We bought our tickets and hopped on the bus that was about to leave soon. It was a hot day and I couldn't wait for the trolley bus to get moving so that we could get some breeze. We had decided to ride the trolley the whole way round, so that we could listen ... read more

Our first full day in Savannah. We decided to take it easy in the morning as we had a few days to explore the area. The AirBnB host had told us that there was a local farmers' market on in Forsyth Park, the park we had visited the night before so we headed there. We spent a relaxing morning looking around the stalls and buying some local foods. The market was nice, but some stuff was quite pricey, once again if money were no object, I'm sure we would have bought more. We did get some local bread, cheeses, fruits and veggies, so that we could cook/make some dinner that evening. We made sure that we got some peaches as that is what this area is famous for. After our shopping, we headed to a local ... read more

We woke up fairly early by our standards and since breakfast was included within the price of our room, we headed over to the breakfast room to see what was on offer. This place had a really good selection of stuff. There was a buffet and we got to order some stuff that was cooked to your liking. Of course, I had to have biscuits and sausage gravy with my breakfast. I am gonna miss this so much, when my trip is over. After breakfast, we headed own to the beach in front of our hotel. The beach was gorgeous, long as far as the eye could see with beautiful white sand. Our hotel even had its own section with some sun loungers. However, we didn't have time to sit and relax on the beach unfortunately. ... read more

This entry is just to let people know that I'm hitting the road again in a couple of days. I'll be heading out on Sunday morning (July 17th) and don't plan on returning until Thursday, August 4th. I realized last month that it had been over a year since I last left America, and with the way things are going in my native land, I felt like getting out of it again. Since flying is something I avoid if possible, and I also try to be thrifty, a road trip to Canada seemed the best fit for this time of year. Plus, it gets me out of this miserable Georgia heat for a while. This trip really has two themes: Canada, and American Presidents. I want to spend as much time in Canada as I can, ... read more

Day 12 - Fort Pierce to Savannah Our trip today was all about seeing the coast. First, we drove up Hwy A1A in search of breakfast. There are a lot of neat little towns along the coast. We really enjoyed the different kinds of building styles and the creative ways people found to gain access to their boats from their homes. With a recommendation from some locals, we found a small but very popular cafe on the coast road called Sunny Side Cafe. We got to sit at the counter and watch all the servers work. Then we drove along A1A to Sattelite Beach where Tony lived when he was 3 and his Dad was stationed at Patrick Air Force Base. The area has chaged a lot since that time. There used to be very little ... read more
