Bye Florida, Hello Georgia

Crooked River State Park, St. Mary, Georgia

It was a short drive for us - less than a hundred miles. We headed north on Interstate 95, looped around Jacksonville, said our goodbyes to Florida, and crossed the state line into Georgia. Got off at mile marker 3 and proceeded to Crooked River State Park.

If Faver Dykes in Florida was the wild side, Crooked River has it all tamed. Vegetation is the same, but the campsites in this park are all manicured and they are huge, probably designed for big motor homes. They have a miniature golf course here and a visitor center with rocking chairs on the porch. There is a sign advertising a sunset boat ride on Friday which we just might join. This is a State Park designed to just lay back and take it easy. We went into town for supplies after setting up camp, so we really don't have to go anywhere today. Time to rest up.

We are done with Florida - all the bucket list items have been crossed off. We saw two National Seashores (Gulf Islands and Canaveral), three major National Parks (Everglades, Biscayne, and Dry Tortugas), four forts (Castillo de San Marcos, Matanzas, Jefferson, and Pickens), and spent time in several cities and towns (Gulf Breeze/Pensacola, Tallahassee, St. Petersburg, Key West, St. Augustine). I think we've done a good job in this state which we found beautiful and interesting (even if really flat!). If we return, on say a second round of bucket list items, I suspect we might visit the Keys again and spend time in St. Augustine. But for now, we say goodbye to Florida as we move on to the second half of our trip through Georgia and the Carolinas! (17.1.42)
