Kayak and moving Happy Birthday Lisa
Friday was the day I was going to get out on the river. There was so much going on all week that I just didn't have time but today was the day. I walked with Oscar over to the river to decide where I would put the kayak in and where to park the van. The spot scoped out and home I went to inflate the kayak and get myself dressed in shorts and my water shoes. The spot I had planned to park the van was now taken so I put the kayak on the bank, drove back to my site and left the van and walked back to the river. Getting in was easier than I anticipated and off I was floating on the river. I headed upstream thinking if I ran out of energy I could just float back. The current was very slow and so was my progress. I just loved the quiet, peace and songs of the birds. I observed all the vegetation, the palm trees, the giant live oaks dripping with spanish moss, the vines crawling over the bank, the giant lily pads, the Cyprus trees with their
knees protruding from the depths. The smells were that of the earth with an occasional fish scent. The breeze was delightful.
Then I saw him, a small alligator, glistening from just immerging from the depths and basking in the sun. It was just perfect...
Then I heard a bang, then a shriek, and realized I had been invaded by "others". Oh well, it was bound to happen. 2 girls were coming downriver in an aluminum canoe shrieking because they had just run into a spider web and banging their paddles on the canoe trying to get away. I said 'HI" as I passed and realized this little piece of the world belonged to all of us.
The rest of my trip was wonderful but left me really tired. I did manage to carry the kayak back to the campsite, had lunch and settled in my chair to have just a little nap. I no sooner fell asleep when I was jolted awake by something crawling on me. It was a squirrel looking for a handout and as he scampered away he knocked over my water glass spilling water all over my phone. Thank goodness the water didn't
penetrate it's Otter Box case and all was well, except my nerves.
At 5 pm I went on the tram ride around the park with a park ranger explaining the best hiking trails and the best times to take them. We stopped at a pond and as he was telling about the different water levels in the park at different times of the year, the frogs started their evening song. It was magical.
The next morning I packed up to leave then got sidetracked watching turkey vultures sitting in the tops of trees right over my site spreading their wings to get the sun on them. Then my neighbor came and joined me and we enjoyed our last conversation. I didn't leave til after 11.
I had a culture shock leaving Hillsbourgh River SP. I completely immersed myself in the nature and beauty and commoradory of the the park. When I drove down the road it felt like I had been through a time warp, I didn't like the new demention.
I arrived in Blythe Island Park, GA about 4pm got settled then went out to dinner and settled in for a good nights sleep.
