Day trip in Savannah

Had a good night sleep in our big 4 post bed (almost needed a ladder to climb into it). Had breakfast downstairs in the dining room with 2 other couples who were from Orlando and another couple from Charlotte. They had been here for a while and were going home today (Sunday). They served us eggs florentine which looked like a quiche, a muffin, croissant and OJ and a raspberry type of desert. All pretty good. The weather started cloudy with a slight shower and pretty cool around 16 degrees, so we decided to use the car for a drive around Savannah’s Historical District. Kerry kept popping out for a photo as we slowly drove around. The best spots were the beautiful homes on Jones Street. We stopped for a coffee at the same café we chose not to dine at the previous night and it was pretty crowded. I had a latte which was quite good, and Kerry settled for a Hot Chocolate. Once we finished the weather improved a bit and showers stopped so we tried finding a parking spot with no luck so we settled to park in a parking garage for $5- (yesterday they were charging $20- for the same spot !). We then walked around the shopping district on Bay St and went down to River St which is so beautiful and lots of nice shops. Kerry nearly bought a new handbag. It is pretty difficult to get down to River St from Bay St as the stairs are really steep and quite slippery and then you are walking on cobble stones so we went into the Hyatt Regency Hotel to use their rest rooms and then whilst taking some nice pictures of River St down below we saw some elevators inside the hotel so we used them pretending we were guests. Next we went to Johnson Square to meet with Chris who we had booked for a free walking tour. The deal is that you give him a tip for what you feel the tour was worth. It was amazing in the sense as soon as the tour started the sun came out and temperature was now around 20 degrees and very pleasant for a walking tour. It went for 2 hours and he took us south to all the squares on Bull Street down to Forsyth Park fountain and he was very informative about

Would be nice to get the cars out of the picture !
the history of each monument and general Savannah history which was great since we knew very little. We are learning fast that this region has had two distinct historical events being the American Revolution where the USA fought Britain to gain independence and later the American Civil War. Had a quick lunch at the café in Forsyth Park Kerry where I had a toasted sandwich with chicken, mayo, red onions and grapes which sounded strange but went together well. We both had a choice of sides so chose chips (e.g. crisps not fries). They will be handy on our next day of driving. We then decided to walk to the Catholic Church which was amazing inside. Tried taking a few photos but they did not come out very well. Very much like I expect the big European churches. We then found our way back down to River Street to grab a coffee at Vic’s On The Water and Kerry did a skype session back home with Elise and my mum as it is Kerry’s birthday in Australia but not here yet ! We then went to much heralded City Market area but a lot of shops were closed as it was now 6.30pm on Sunday night but we did find another candy store we tasted this thing again and decided to buy some treats to take home with us to share with the kids. One of the couples we had breakfast with today were talking about this great tapas bar they found last night, and we came across something underground that we thought might be it, so we went for the adventure. Kerry thought it looked a bit seedy when we went in but it turned out fine. We had a couple of small meals to share and a guy started singing some jazz & blues on the keyboard and he was real good. Then we went back to the parking lot and relieved to see the Nissan Rogue still there and drove home. Back early around 8pm and Kerry was trying to watch a bit of TV whilst I was updating the travel blog but we could not get TV to change channels so no choice but to watch Good Wife so now we know what will be happening before Australia sees it ! We leave Savannah tomorrow. Not a long drive to the next destination but the first
