Man, did it pour our last night in Portage. In fact, when we awoke on Friday, it was still raining hard. Ray was disappointed, as there was a trout pond right near us he was hoping to try out, but it was too wet to go. We had a leisurely morning, getting up late, having breakfast, and doing most of our packing. We gave all our extra food to Kirk, the manager here at the RV park, and he seemed very appreciative. Cost of goods up here is quite expensive, so it was good to help him out. We finally got underway around 11:00 AM for the short drive back up to Anchorage. We decided that we were going to go into the downtown area, look at some shops and get some lunch before checking our ... read more

We awoke this morning to a much cooler temperature than previous mornings. After breakfast, we unhooked, cleaned the windshield and left Denali. The campsite we stayed at, Golden Nugget, while very convenient to everything here, was certainly not the greatest. Very dusty and no scenery at the site. We hit Rte 3 southbound, and the weather was gorgeous; a slight chill, brilliant clear skies and no clouds. The scenery southbound was once again spectacular. With the Talkeetna Mountains on our left, and the Susitna River on our right, there was a vista at every turn, requiring a quick Kodak moment stop. Just South of Cantell, about 20 miles out of Denali National Park, while crossing Broad Pass, we came around a turn and there off our right was Mt. McKinley, clear as a bell, and majestic ... read more

I arrive at the Las Vegas airport on Saturday morning sans a drivers license. For those who know me well, this really isn't that surprising. Unfortunately, after a late night out at Tao nightclub, I lost any form of photo identification. I would like to say this was my first time traveling without an ID, but that would be a lie. My second year of orthopedic residency, I arrived at the Santa Clara airport with no form of identification except for a library book. I was able to get on the flight that time, mostly because of my sheer pathetic appearance after a 30 hour overnight shift, and I was hoping my luck would hold. Fortunately, it did. After an interrogation, pat down, and a luggage search, I was able to board the flight to Seattle. ... read more

We wake up early to a free breakfast at the hotel. Fortunately there are blackout curtains so we actually got some sleep. We pack up our economy size bright cherry red Mazda, and we head downtown. We fit right in among the F450s. I'm pretty sure we will die if we have any run-in with the local wildlife. Our plan for the day is to bike the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. We went our bikes downtown from a sociable man named Pablo. He informs us that this trail was voted the number two most beautiful bike trail in the nation. So we are pumped. I get a cruiser and David gets a mountain bike. We take our time in the beginning of the trail. We bike through Earthquake Park, which is the site of the San ... read more

So I took a trip to Anchorage, AK and it was amazing. Normally I'd say I'm not a snow and winter kind of girl, but now I might be second guessing that lol. In Alaska I stayed at the Embassy Suites Anchorage; one of the best in town. This hotel was phenomenal, the staff was great, my hotel room was comfortable, and their complimentary breakfast was delicious. My stay in Anchorage was very short, but I made it worth my while. In Alaska I decided to go to the SeaLife Center. The SeaLife Center was a little out of Anchorage, but it wasn't too far. At the center I went to the octopus and puffin encounter which was a tour based on octopus and birds. I got to learn a bunch of different things about octopus ... read more

ANCHORAGE We picked up a hotel shuttle bus at the airport and gave the driver our hotel details - we were a little concerned when he said he had not heard of it! He did get us there though and it was actually really easy to find being right next to the Railway Station. We had planned this as our next journey would be by train and not plane. Before that though we had a few days in the largest city in Alaska. It was July and we were told that this was the best time to visit with good weather which it proved to be. As you would expect in the high northern latitudes, the longest days come around the summer solstice, 21 June, and they get quite short around the winter solstice, 21 December. ... read more

North to Alaska Flying into the four hour endless sunset is weird and we arrive at dusk in Anchorage at 12:45 am. It is chilly waiting for the hotel shuttle, sort of like an October evening. Check in and drop off immediately. Awake to the sound of a train whistle. We are near the station and across from the rail yard where the observation cars bed down for the night. In a couple of days we will be seated in one and off to discover southern Alaska. We enjoy breakfast and head out for a walk. Our hotel in on Ship Creek and the salmon are running. It's about 60 degrees and cloudy but the weather is refreshing and does not discourage fishermen (and women) from wading in the chill water. The creek banks are mud ... read more

It is 10pm and the sun is shining brightly enough to wear sunglasses while walking back to hotel from dinner. Hard to give up and go to bed. Kids are all off with host families. Looked like a fun evening ahead. Can't wait to hear the stories in the morning. ... read more

Down to breakfast. What a difference a day makes. Plastic plates and cutlery, bacon that looked like it should be in a bag and called bacon chips, the only redeemer was the self made waffles. Into the bus for a tour of Anchorage. Look up and streets are closed for the ladies day run - lots of women running, walking and generally just enjoying the run. Off to the Ulu factory (a special Alaskan Indian knife that sort of looks like a pizza cutter). Oops, Lori takes a turn and what do you know - street closed for the run. Ever seen a 52 sweater bus do a 3 point turn to go back - not a bad effort. Ulu demonstration by young dude, usual gift shop, etc. and then we find out the young dude ... read more
