This summer we were given this great opportunity to travel to Alaska for some adventure and much needed family time. Luckily I had some summer time that I could devote to a little adventure before my big move to the Midwest for a new job. We flew into Anchorage and hit the road in our chariot (read RV), stopping to gawk at the amazing beauty of the glaciers, wild berries and scenery. In Seward we split so that half of us could go Halibut fishing and the other half of us visited the incredible aquarium in town, walked the shops and got some killer clam chowder. After this adventure we then hitched a ride on a Kenai fjords trip where we took in sights including puffins, sea otters (my favorite) and for a lucky few, a ... read more

Geo: 61.2176, -149.858We caught the fabulous Sky train back to the airport without a hitch and boarded our flight after passing through US immigration before we had even left Canada. It was a welcome relief to get this part over and done with when we had time to spare at the airport rather than when we landed - I know from experience how long it can take to clear immigration once in the states and so this was brilliantly efficient and something I wish we could always do! The landing was a little bumpy but aside from that it was a good flight. However, we did get a glimpse into the future for the cruise we are taking next week - everyone on the flight was over 60 aside from us - the majority of people ... read more

Alaska by Land for 7 Days DAY 3: Wednesday - Homer/Anchorage We woke to another magnificent summer’s day in Alaska. The sun was shining and the temperature was mild, so mild that I left my coat over the chair in our hotel room!!!! Damn! They are going to post it home. After departing Homer, we stopped along the way so that we could experience the beauty of the area and break for lunch. We visited the Norman Lowell Gallery. The 70 yo artist was in the gallery, now with only 10 percent of his sight but he is still painting. The gallery was huge with both paintings and carvings of Alaska. We had a chat to him where he told us he had set up a foundation to advance local artists. His art was beautiful and ... read more

The last three days have been busy ones. We took the free shuttle into Anchorage and wandered around for a while. We have dinner reservations at the Bridge, a restaurant we discovered last time we were here and has the freshest King Crab ever. We ended up at Humpy's, a saloon/tavern/restaurant and ordered our favorite Alaskan beer, Kodiak Brown. Either the formula has changed or our tastes buds, but it was not nearly as good as we remembered. Nothing else attracted us so we made our way slowly to Ship's Creek and the restaurant. We were too early to be seated but we watched the fisher people for a while. We saw one man with two large salmon but never did see a salmon caught. When we were seated by the window and waiting for our ... read more

Well, I guess driving across Canada, back to the Yukon, was not enough... I had about a week off, so I decided to do a road trip to Alaska. I had never been to Anchorage and the Kenai Peninsula, so I though this would be an interesting trip! And it is. Alaska is beautiful. And I was very lucky to get a perfect day to drive from the Yukon. I don’t even know how many times I said “WOW!” out loud, even if I was alone in my minivan (now officially called the Gypsy Van). I had been on part of that road before, at least to Glennallen, where I used to run the Copper Basin 300, a sled dog race. Lots of memories came back, as I was driving through Chistochina, Gakona, Glennallen, Tolsona. I ... read more

Susan encouraged me to continue my travel blog... so before we head out I had to make sure I could get in and post okay! Mark and I are headed to Portland, OR. We are going to visit his brother John's grave in Trinidad, CA and visit friends near there who were John's second wife's best girlfriend. First to Portland to pick up a 19' RV from Cruise America... we have found that this is quite a wonderful, independent way to travel, even if one has relatives and friends to stay with on the way. If you are getting this blog and would rather not, let me know and I can delete your email from the list!... read more

When young people complain that someone asked them for proof of their age they get upset. Tonight, perhaps for the last time in my life, an Alaskan waiter asked for my passport as proof of age. Yes! The holiday has made me younger. That can be the only logical conclusion, surely. (Over zealous RSA may have been her motivation but I don't care. I will take it in the best light possible.) Anchorage is a pleasant, well laid out city. It is one big grid. We only heard two car toots all day and they were very justified. The most populous fishing spot in the world is here where the salmon swim annually. It is just across from the ulu factory, one of which we purchased. The school kids get from mid May to end of ... read more

Last day to pack it up and hit the road... Breakfast at The Caribou Family Restaurant. They offered caribou and reindeer sausage. When asked the difference, our spunky waitress said that reindeer can fly! We heard on the local news that a pregnant moose delivered her calf in the Lowe's parking lot between cars. The drivers, not wanting to disturb the pair, said they would return later for their cars... Never saw anything like that at our Lowe's! We decided to golf 9 holes at the Birch Ridge Golf Course. Sally commented that the fairways were like pastures compared to our courses at home, but compared to the Fireweed Meadows GC in Anchor Point, it was like Augusta! Perspective is everything... The setting was beautiful, but we had several STEEP climbs. A car drove down the ... read more

We are sitting here looking out our window at a blue sky over the mountains with a hint of snow still on their peaks. There is a slight wind but, as we are inside, it is irrelevant. A Face Book friend reassured me that it is cold in Sydney at present. Winter has arrived At last, she said. Hmm. How rude, I am not sure I am acclimated for that. The computer/thermostat says "No!". (Please. Someone. Is it acclimatised or acclimated? I think the former, others the latter.) The weather today is defined as 9 to 19 degrees in Anchorage and apparently Sydney is 11 to 17 degrees. It is certainly a 'different' cold. Wind chill here can be a bit grim but not from where we are sitting. Before setting off for a tourist activity ... read more

We have some catching up to do here even though it’s only been 6 days. We had a great R&R at the Sourdough Campground in Tok. The pancakes and reindeer sausage were everything they advertised and we left with full bellies, a clean truck and clean cloths. The road from Tok to Anchorage is known as the Tok Bypass until it reaches the Glenn Highway. Michelle and I renamed this road the Ribbon Candy Slowpass. Do not get caught admiring the beautiful views as I did once, hitting a series of frost heaves way to fast and jarring the truck, the fifth wheel and the navigator. We made too many stops for pictures and finally just had to keep moving or risk turning a 6 hour drive into an all-day photo fest. It would have been ... read more
