I'm excited to be planning my trip. I have several volunteer jobs lined up for the duration. Though I want to get as varied an experience as I can, I know I'll have time to play, too! The main job I'll be doing there is working with the Communications Team. I don't know the details yet, but as I understand it, we will be the information repository for the race. That job will start for me on Monday, the day after the official start of the Iditarod. We will be collecting and sharing data from the checkpoints, entering it into spreadsheets, issuing reports, and certainly more activities. Before the race, I have a short stint at the Registration Desk on one of the evenings, helping mushers and volunteers check in for the week, and will be ... read more

The 2018 race will be the 46th running of the Iditarod, "The Last Great Race." There are currently 68 teams registered to race across Alaska from near Anchorage to Nome, a distance of about 1,000 miles. The winner in 2017 set a record of just over 8 days to complete the distance. The teams race around the clock, with 3 mandatory rest stops spaced along the course. The race commemorates the historical delivery of diptheria serum by heroic dog sled teams, back in January, 1925, when Nome was even more remote than it is today; even mail was delivered to Nome by dog sled. When the local doctor diagnosed a few cases of diptheria, he radioed to locate serum to halt the outbreak. In the days of open cockpit planes, in January it ... read more

N'ayant pas ... read more

Introduction: In July of 2017, Anne and I took our daughter and her family to Alaska to see some of the sights we have seen on prior trips. One major reason was to let our granddaughter Maggie enjoy the uniqueness of Alaska including the bears of Katmai National Park. I think they all enjoyed the trip very much but believe that Maggie enjoyed seeing the sled dog puppies at the Iditerod Trail Sled Dog Museum in Wasilla the most. Below is a recap of the trip detailing where we went with pictures of some of the sights we saw. Several of the pictures are shown on this page intermingled with the text. Other pictures are shown below the text. Clicking on any one of them will take you to a larger version of the picture. You ... read more

On a day when the sun peeps through the clouds in Anchorage you get out and walk the streets which are lined with beautiful flowering baskets , you potter about the town garden squares and admire the bursts of colour of the most massive flowers.... they are all 5 times bigger here than in U.K. Downtown Anchorage has the feel of a small town with very few high rise buildings - maybe that's something to do with earthquakes and I am praying that another one doesn't happen while I am here !!!! Once in a lifetime is enough for me. It is small enough to wander in the central area , and gaze with Captain Cook across the water of Cook Straight to the mountains beyond. However on the days when rain and dark clouds beckon ... read more

North to Alaska – Day 1 We started our day early, to get to the airport for a 5:40AM boarding. Of course, thinking the lines would be short, that early, was my first mistake. The second mistake was thinking the TSA Pre line would be shorter than the regular screening line. We made it to the gate shortly after the boarding began, and were able to board when our rows were called. Feeling rushed, it was a great feeling to get seated and wait for the trip to begin. We took off late, but made it to Seattle 20 minutes early, made the next flight with no “rush” mode setting in. Both flights were on Alaska Airlines, which still have a nice seat spacing, where my knees are not against the seat in front of me, ... read more

OUR ALASKAN ADVENTUREMAY 18-31, 2004Tuesday, May 18It didn’t seem possible that we were taking this trip! We’d planned it since booking an RV in December, and Bob had long ago made a car rental reservation plus a B&B booking. However, just 16 hours ago I was driving to Pt. Charlotte from our home in Englewood, FL; halfway there, my ’99 Cadillac was rear-ended not once, but twice, in North Port. The vehicle that caused my car to be totaled also hit six other cars and trucks before finally saving me for last. The poor lady who was hit just before me (she also hit me) had to be air-lifted to a Tampa ... read more

So finally a year later than anticipated I’m on my way, destination Anchorage and maybe further. Anchorage is to be found in Alaska, umpteen miles away from where my bike is, which can be found in Cochrane Canada. It's the same poor old beast that took me to Ushuaia and back and will now have to schlepp my arse up to the home of the feared GRIZZLY. I really want to see one but from a safe distance, I’d rather not end my days as a grizzly turd. One each leg of the South American trip I’d write down little notes to self about things to bring, being it sexy underwear or things for the motorbike, this time it’ll be easier as I will start in a country where they have things, things that are my ... read more

We got our bags out onto the outside second floor walkway for transport to Anchorage by HAL. We walked over to the Denali Square just across the street for breakfast, where I had a heated cinnamon roll and mocha Frappuccino and Sharon got a chocolate chip muffin. We sat on some benches outside the restaurant, and protected from the misty rain. Sharon had become concerned about our likelihood (or lack thereof) of reaching Seward in time to make it to the onboard Sunday mass tomorrow evening. I didn’t see what the problem of and asked, “Why don’t we just go Sunday morning in Anchorage?” noting that the train won’t be leaving Anchorage for Seward until noon. “Hmm,” Sharon thought, “Thanks! I Might have thought of that!” We waited in the Dinner Theatre from the other night, ... read more
