We awoke this morning to a much cooler temperature than previous mornings. After breakfast, we unhooked, cleaned the windshield and left Denali. The campsite we stayed at, Golden Nugget, while very convenient to everything here, was certainly not the greatest. Very dusty and no scenery at the site. We hit Rte 3 southbound, and the weather was gorgeous; a slight chill, brilliant clear skies and no clouds. The scenery southbound was once again spectacular. With the Talkeetna Mountains on our left, and the Susitna River on our right, there was a vista at every turn, requiring a quick Kodak moment stop. Just South of Cantell, about 20 miles out of Denali National Park, while crossing Broad Pass, we came around a turn and there off our right was Mt. McKinley, clear as a bell, and majestic in the crisp, early morning sun. There is no way our pictures or words can describe this wonder. It's like the Grand Canyon: if you haven't been there and looked over the edge, pictures just won't give you the experience. For the next 50-60 miles, we kept getting views of "Denali", all from different angles. Bud stated he's not sure why he took a 6
1/2 hour bus ride yesterday, when all he had to do was drive 20 miles south. For a mountain that is only viewable 30% of the time, we felt that God was very good to us.
We made a quick stop at Trapper Creek to stretch our legs and pick up an Ice coffee and a bag of our new, favorite snack - chedder popcorn. It's like having candy on board, it's hard to stop eating it. We passed thru interesting villages with names like Montana Creek, Gigglewood, and Talkeetna. In Wasilla, we kept an eye out for a Sarah Palin sighting, to no avail. We're now back in civilization, with stores everywhere, wide roads and lot's of traffic. We've decided to spend the night in Anchorage, as there appears to be nothing much to choose from as far as RV sites, just to the south of the city. Our first choice was Ship Creek RV park. After winding our way through narrow streets, truck terminals, fuel storage tanks and feeling we were back in East Boston again, we came upon the RV park. As none of us had a firearm with us, we opted to pass over this
place and go to plan B, the Golden Nugget RV park. This turned out to be fine, although we found out after we got settled, that their internet was inoperative, so this blog is going out late. We stopped off at our new favorite store, WalMart, and picked up a few necessities, did our laundry and met at the picnic table. We reviewed pictures of the day and offered up Wine sacrifices for our good luck today. Might have to hit the wine store again as we "sacrificed" a lot. We grilled dinner tonight, and it was the Sweetser's turn to clean the grill. Took Bud about a half hour and constant muttering and whining, but he finally got it spotless. After informing John that the next time was his turn, he said he would take us all out to dinner that night, on him. After we started spilling our wine on a frequent basis, we decided it was time to turn in. We've called ahead for reservations at 3 RV parks on the Kenai Peninsula for the coming week, so we are all set.
