We decided to thaw out the nice piece of frozen ahi tuna we bought the other day for dinner, it's one of Ian's favorites. We normally like to grill it quickly and serve it with Soya sauce and Wasabi. Although our search for Wasabi at the Super Mega hadn't worked out, we were successful at finding some Wasabi powder at Chedraui which will work just fine. Ian had the bbq all hot and ready to go, rice cooking on the stove, salad made. When we opened the tuna we noticed right away that something wasn't right, the tuna turned out to be already cooked and smoked. Neither of us had heard of smoked tuna before, it wasn't what we expected, it tasted ok, sort of like smoked salmon but tuna. Anyway, we decided to just slice ... read more

Our landlady came by and showed us how to use the air conditioning, she tells us it is very expensive but now at least we have the option if it becomes intolerably hot. We pay for utilities so it will be at our expense anyway. She has been just great about taking care of everything around the condo. We walked to the Chedraui (pronounced Shed-ru-ee) which is another superstore downtown where there are more locals shopping than tourists compared to the Super Mega. It is a chain which is owned by Carlos Slim, the richest man in the world (we googled to check, he is even richer than Bill Gates!) Security guards are present at the entrance and exit, the first time we were there, one security guard was holding a shot gun. If you have ... read more

So we decided not to spend a cent today since we've been spending a little more than we budgetted for and we had lots of food in the fridge. We did this a few times when we were in Costa Rica last year. Went for a walk in the morning - south (opposite to downtown) where the international cruise ship terminal is. Since there were no ships today, it was like a ghost town. Mexicans work six days per week so Sunday is really 'the weekend.' Then we hung around the condo, skyped with Miranda and Mom & Gary. With all the windows open, a wind gust caused our master bedroom door to slam shut and lock. We found we didn't have a key to open that door. Ian played around for a while trying to ... read more

If you have left any comments on this blog so far, we just figured out today how to read them and accept them, I'm still not sure though if readers can see them or not. We are still new at this blogging business but getting a better hang of it and many thanks to our family and friends who are following our adventure, your comments are always welcome and much appreciated! Today is more cloudy than usual and it has been raining overnight, although there is a nice breeze, it is so humid and muggy that we both feel sticky only a few minutes after we shower. We can't figure out how to turn on our air conditioning, I guess we will have to bug our condo owner again, she's probably getting sick of us by ... read more

We can't believe it's been a week since we arrived, it has been packed with adventures so far. I haven't blogged for a few days since we rented a car so we were making the most of our time to sight see. Our car which was $18 per day was nothing special, dinged and dented, carpet worn through, a convertible where the top does not go up, broken emergency brake - you get the picture, but it was totally fun. The beaches are along the southern west shore about 10 km from here. There is a row of private beach clubs (meaning they are private and have restaurants and bars.) Some charge entrance fees which go to maintaining the area, some are free. Some are nicer than others. Our favorite so far is called Paradise Beach ... read more

Last night the bar across the street had a live band until 4 am. After a long day in the sun, we had gone to bed at 9 pm, before the band started, so we didn't know what we were in for. In our new suite, we can leave the windows open since there is no balcony - which is nice and cool in the evening, but the music was really loud which woke us both. Even after I got up and closed the window, it was still pretty loud. Since we don't have to get up to work or anything, I guess it doesn't really matter since we can take a nap any time if we want. Since we don't have a car today, we walked downtown around noon which was packed with tourists from ... read more

It is truly a paradise here, beautiful weather every day but not so hot that we need air conditioning. Our condo has ceiling fans which are sufficient to keep us comfortable. There always seems to be a nice breeze going through, which also adds to our comfort. The windows have screens although we have seen very few bugs. We can't get over how cheap things are here, like groceries and booze. Groceries are about half the cost, the variety is much larger and the quality seems better than what we get in Nelson. Everything is fresher: produce, meat, cheese and of course fish. A couple of things are different, milk is all reconstituted and not fresh. Both milk and eggs come in cartons on a regular shelf as opposed to a refrigerated area. There are many ... read more

Day 3 - we walked south to the international cruise ship terminal in the morning. There is a small business area to greet tourists, mostly the same stuff you see everywhere in Mexico although a little more expensive. Shops along the way have sales people out front to lure you in which is a standard practice here in Mexico, we can't blame them trying to earn a living. In the afternoon, we walked again to downtown about half an hour. People here take a Siesta (afternoon nap) from 1 - 5 pm, so some stores are closed, no wonder they can stay up late to party! The kitchen in our condo is not very well equipped, we needed a decent fry pan, knife, bbq supplies (yes, they still use briquettes here,) so we checked out another ... read more

Going anywhere from Balfour is always an endeavour. Two days ago we we took the 4 hour drive to Spokane, then spent the night at the usual Days Inn. It's nothing fancy, but very cheap, close to the airport, free airport shuttle and we leave our truck in their secured parking lot for $10 per week. For the first time, we tried the Longhorn BBQ restaurant in Airway Heights, their decor was very dated but food was good and reasonably priced. We will definitely go back. Yesterday, Frontier Airline flights were both on time, 2 hours to Denver, then 3 1/2 hours direct to Cozumel. Arriving in Mexico is always an experience, first the line up for immigration, then get your luggage for customs inspection where you push a button. If your light is green - ... read more

...Our Honeymoon cruise continued! I'd been horribly sick the past day and a half from food poisoning on the ship, but was grateful to be feeling well enough to venture on shore for our last port day of our honeymoon cruise on the Oasis of the Seas. Since we'd been to Cozumel before, we took it easy and grabbed a taxi into the main shopping area and walked around for a bit before deciding to grab a bite to eat at Margaritaville. Yes, it is a chain, but it has beautiful views of the water. Jason even got a chair massage! Cruise montage video from our whole trip: www.youtube.com/watch?v=NH0SkLJXSrU... read more
