Feliz Navidad shake shake shake shake shake shake, think Julio Iglesias here. I think I was looking forward to Cozumel the most, just because it's finally time for me to see Mexico, besides a nasty border town. It's Christmas, I speak Spanish, and the tours sound kind of lame, so why don't we just go explore on our own. We'll be okay... Walking off the ship and through the shops at the pier, there are swindlers everywhere and I'm not in the mood. One guy catches us on our way out to the street. You want a scooter to explore the island. I stop. Hmmm... what comes to mind? Subic Bay and the jet skis that miracuously break down when you're out in the water and they try to make you pay for it because "you ... read more

This last week we have had terrible weather. The tropical storm "Ida" has been working it's way through the Caribbean and right along the path where we regularly sail. The ships do their best to avoid the storms, most of our ships based out of Florida have detoured to avoid this end of the Caribbean entirely. But being out of Galveston, there's not really anywhere else to go. So we've been sailing on as usual. And it has been rough sailing! It's been a long time since I've been on a ship this rocky and really, it's not fun. Guests are sick all the time (and everywhere) and even when we finally do reach land, it tends to be grey and rainy and windy and generally dreary. Thus the lack of blogs about the last couple ... read more

(3rd & 4th stops on the cruise) The ship next brought us to Key West, Florida for Fantasy Fest (www.fantasyfest.net). Fantasy Fest is a huge celebration during Halloween that entails parades, huge parties on the streets, costumes and LOTS of body paint and nudity. It's like a giant adult playground! We even got to meet Ron Jeremy. If you don't know who he is, you probably don't want to look him up, especially if you are faint of heart. After spending one day and two nights of partying on the streets of Key West, we spent one glorious day at sea giving both our feet and kidneys a break. We woke the next morning to disembark in Cozumel, Mexico which is a small island near Cancun. We all ended up splitting up that day and Spyce ... read more

A favourite part of repeated contracts on the cruise ships for me is getting to meet up with friends from previous ships. I’m into my final two weeks on the Ecstasy (my replacement, Brian, has arrived and I’ve begun his intro training) but I’ve got a few exciting reunions during these last days. Today in Cozumel was one: I got to meet up with my friend Erica, who I worked with this past winter on the Fantasy. Cozumel has been a staple port for me during these three years at sea. When I transfer in 2 weeks time, there will be no stops in Cozumel. Considering I don’t know my plans beyond this year, who knows if I’ll be back. So I’ve been trying to fit in all of the last things I need to do ... read more

Today another day in Cozumel has rolled around. I wanted to go and see something I hadn’t yet seen there, so I asked Chris if he wanted to go to a beach. In all the many many times I’ve been to Cozumel, I’ve never just gone to a beach! As we walked off the ship, the sun was shining. We’ve had what’s seemed like endless days of grey, overcast skies and often rain. I commented on the lovely weather and we savoured the sun and knowing we’d have a day out in it. We got in a taxi and headed off to Playa Puntacar, about a ten minute ride from the ship’s pier. Then the skies opened up and an extreme downpour began! Go figure . . . We got to the beach and just sat ... read more

It’s been about a week and a half since the epic adventure of transferring to the Carnival Ecstasy. And it’s been pretty chaotic ever since. When I arrived on the Ecstasy, it was in it’s final days of dry dock (renovations). We had one night in Freeport, then 3 days to sail to Galveston, the ship’s home port. That time was needed. Though the ship had been in dry dock for 4 weeks, it was still a mess. Walking around the ship, I couldn’t wrap my head around how it was ever going to be in a condition for guests to be onboard, let alone be ready in only a few short days. But I didn’t have to worry about the whole ship, thankfully, just my own club. There were long days spent up in the ... read more
