I came to Cozumel to DIVE. There is a ferry that runs every hour from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel, and its an air-conditioned, smooth, 45 minute ride to this island that marks the start of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. The dive shops are numerous, as are the dive sites, so I know I am in the right place! I walked a bit out of the main tourist zone and found the Dive Paradise shop, located next to a flaming orange building called the Hotel Barracuda. They have a multitude of diving packages, and the 9 dives/3 nights at the Barracuda was the one for me! Those nine dives added more to my dive log than I could have ever expected! Each dive brought a litany of new creatures to the front of my mask. The ... read more

Cruise #1: Carnival Inspiration from Tampa to Cozumel First of all, let me start out by saying I had little interest in going on a cruise. I thought it would be boring to just spend time doing nothing but eating and stuck in a confined space with total strangers. Not only I had no interest, in fact I was concerned somewhat of being forced into a rigid schedule. However, a family friend of ours convinced we do a cruise together and we thought to give it a try. Another family joined us (amazingly the timing was perfect for all 3 families), so we cruised together as a party of 8 adults and 6 kids (ages 7-13yrs). Things went so well, the experience definitely exceeded my expectations. Here is some useful info if you plan on taking ... read more

10th MAY 2009 - HANGING AT THE BEACH & SALSA SQUARE!! Woke up early again this morning and relaxed in bed reading until I heard Nat stir at about 8.30. Up and out at 8.30am.....on a Sunday!! We wandered to a nearby supermarket to buy some stuff for breakfast and then headed back to the hostel to eat it. Once eaten, we decided to act like it was Sunday and so we lazed around the hostel for a couple of hours reading and journal writing. Weird when travelling…weekends just seem like any other day and you don’t look forward to them in the same way at all! I am sure I will appreciate them a lot more once I am back into the swing of work again! Just after lunch we headed out and strolled along ... read more

10/5/09 = A day at the local beach Great sleep, ready for breakfast. Breakfast involved trek to supermarket today, so up, changed and off we tramped. Few blocks up and stocked in on the usual ingredients = fruit, muesli and yoghurt - still waiting for this whole bananas repelling mosquitoes thing to kick in, but 2 weeks in, I’d say it’s not looking good! Ate in the nice, but dirty kitchen back at hostel, then went and did a few hours work on the blog - ever dedicated to the cause! 2 hours later, with cameras fully charged, headed off for our Cozumel beach day. Posh beach in Cozumel = to the left of the pier, but several miles away; local beach = left and only 10mins away…not hard to guess which one we went for. ... read more

9/5/09 = A snorkelling trip on Cozumel Up early today ready for bus and boat trip to island of Cozumel. Spent a few hours at work on free internet (this hostel really had been great), then had the last of the great breakfasts. Packed up and checked out by 9:30, then off to bus station. First part of journey = to Playa Del Carmen = not far away. Got our 30peso ticket for shuttle bus and did our less than an hour journey to arrive there at 11am. Playa Del Carmen = a totally different town again…even more holiday than Cancun. Arrived to a large square of shops and restaurants, just like a shopping centre might see at home. Hardly any tourists still because of swine flu, but can imagine would be really busy on a ... read more

9th MAY 2009 - SNORKELLING IN COZUMEL....I SAW A SEA TURTLE...TOTALLY AWESOME DUDE!!!!! Got up at around 7am...the early bird catches the worm and all (or at least the best pick of the breakfast offerings)!! After stocking up on breakfast so that we wouldn’t be hungry until at least lunch time, we browsed the net for directions to a couple of hostels in Cozumel and then set off to the bus station at around 9.30am!! The buses ran every 10 minutes and so we managed to jump on one straight away for the hour long journey to Playa De Carmen. So nice to be on a bus sometimes - cool air and snooze fest!! We arrived in Playa De Carmen at around 11am and had 40 minutes to kill there before the ferry ride across to ... read more

We didn't plan any excursions for Cozumel, opting instead to take the day easy and just walk around a little bit in the port area. We grabbed lunch at a place called Three Amigos and had a table by the water. The water was so beautiful!! It was really nice to just enjoy the beautiful weather and take a big breath, knowing that it was ok to relax.. we were on VACATION!!! After lunch, we shopped a little bit and got some much needed sunscreen (SPF 30). It came into use for the rest of the trip because we both stayed by the pool when were were on board. (The weather stayed beautiful!) I ended up getting a dancing sculpture to add to my collection as well as a pretty pendant charm which I've already worn ... read more

Today we’re back in Cozumel and I was so excited because we had a crew tour on offer! Cozumel is such a great port but as a crew member it’s usually spent either taking advantage of the places with wireless internet or partying. For far too long I didn’t see anything beyond the shops and bars in Cozumel. I tend to feel pretty proud of myself when I actually get out and do something in this port. Then when it’s something offered with fellow crew, it’s especially exciting because you get the sight-seeing plus the social aspect! Near the island of Cozumel is another small island called Isla Pasion. There are a few different excursions on offer to go and enjoy the island for the day. Our tour took us there by Twister! Twister is an ... read more

Spring break is still upon me here on the ship. 300 teens - and my participation rates have been around 80% so I am intensely busy. Which also means, of course, teen tours are still running. Today in Cozumel, I ran my third teen tour in the last 10 days! I took a group of five teens to the adventure park for an afternoon of high ropes and snorkeling. The group was really fun; we enjoyed the day greatly. For the first half of our tour, we were suited up in safety gear. There was a whole team of guides working from the ground at belaying everyone up in the high ropes course. Watching them work made me reminisce of my fall working at the leadership training centre back home when I’d spend all day out ... read more

Went with Timmy, Kane, Jodie, Mariam, Arscott, Mats, Morris, and Har Har. How was it? Relaxing & Ridiculous. We stayed in a private Villa about 10min outside of down town on the southwest side of the island. Had our own pool, dock, and (very key) hammock. Spent a lot of time in the Villa, but also went into town to eat and drink, but Cozumel is mainly a Scuba diving and Cruise line town so it was pretty dead at night. Really safe place, especially for mexico. Managed to get 3 dives in. First 2 were boat dives with Tim and Kane, saw loads of sea turtles, barracuda, giant crabs and groupers, and an 8 foot nurse shark! Very cool diving. 3 dive was two days later, we did a discover scuba dive with almost the ... read more
