10/5/09 = A day at the local beach
Great sleep, ready for breakfast. Breakfast involved trek to supermarket today, so up, changed and off we tramped. Few blocks up and stocked in on the usual ingredients = fruit, muesli and yoghurt - still waiting for this whole bananas repelling mosquitoes thing to kick in, but 2 weeks in, I’d say it’s not looking good! Ate in the nice, but dirty kitchen back at hostel, then went and did a few hours work on the blog - ever dedicated to the cause!
2 hours later, with cameras fully charged, headed off for our Cozumel beach day. Posh beach in Cozumel = to the left of the pier, but several miles away; local beach = left and only 10mins away…not hard to guess which one we went for. Intended to shop on the way since everything was closed last night, but yet again, all shops closed. In fact, square was like a ghost town, it was so empty. Maybe everything closes here on Sundays? Maybe it’s a religion thing? But where do all tourists go?
With no shopping available, plodded off along the front to our local
beach. Really nice front lined with a white wall and statues and fountains all along it…and this wasn’t even the posh side. 15 sweaty mins later, arrived at beach. Wasn’t like the posh beach of Cancun - much more like Progresso in Merida - and beach was very rocky, but made our way down and found a good spot. Always easy to get a good spot on a local beach in Mexico, since none of the Mexicans ever lay on the beach. Sure enough…no tourists, but hundreds of Mexicans in the water, sitting on rocks, or out under the shade. We did the usual…towels down, cream on, laid out 😊.
Water was tricky, but well worth it, lined with wet and slippy boulders. Did a cautious walk/slide into water and was rewarded with some of best water been in in Mexico. Perfect temperature (v.refreshing) and totally calm; even had a bit of a swim because was so nice. In between the swimming, the laying down was also a different experience, as we were positioned right next to some kind of Mexican beach bar. Mexican beach bar = music, v.loud, v.Mexican music. Even an MP3 player on full blast
couldn’t cover it up. Had to my usual zoning out and when next opened eyes an hour later, beach totally full. Full of Mexicans drinking…and they know how to do it right. I’ve never see so many people drinking in the sea. A Corona in the sea…that’s the way to do it. Mexicans love Sundays ay?
Spent the rest of the day in and out of the water, in and out of the cold drinks stand. I even found a man selling ice-pops…wow! Awesome! It’s so hot in Mexico. All in all, was a great day, aside for the guys asking if they could take photos of us. Just starting to feel normal and blend in when that happens. Note to self…if want to blend in in Central America, die hair brown/black.
Totally sunned out by 4:30. Left heaving beach with blaring music and strolled back to hostel. Still no people around in town. Odd. Was only when got back to hostel and a girl mentioned that it was Mothers Day that everything made sense. Mothers Day ay…so that’s why the shops were closed, that’s why town was so empty and that’s why so many people
were at the beach…and drinking. Ahhhh. Never realised before that England is so odd with having Mothers Day in March; just assumed everyone had Mothers Day then.
Was 5:30 when got back. Decided to chill and write some diary, but were so many mosquitoes in room had to get under sheets just to escape them. A total love-hate relationship with mosquitoes - they seem to love me and I hate them. Finished diary, showered and out by 7:15. Hurray, all restaurants open. Found a really good one on a corner, with a really nice, English speaking waiter and got the best food have eaten in Mexico so far = a stuffed pepper. Really good. Not to mention the daily nachos and guacamole; can’t have a day in Mexico without them Good food in Mexico; am a fan. Ate, chatted with nice waiter, drunk lovely ice cocktails, then headed over into central square for ‘the dance’. Sunday = Salsa night = brilliant. Had a band complete with a really good lady singer and a crowd of people all sitting and watching. Only a few couples dancing though; wish I knew how and would have joined in. Joined everyone else
on a nearby wall to watch, but turned out to be the wrong choice - far too close to the dance floor and far too conspicuous. Again, the blonde hair acted like a flashing beacon guiding the Mexican guys in, who tried to get us to dance. Wouldn’t have minded if any of them had been anywhere under the age of 50 or remotely sober! Moved from that spot as soon as another space came available!
Watched for an hour or so, really happy to see dance floor get busier. Was mainly older couples = cute, but were also some really good younger couples and some just plain weird people, especially the 3 lone Guys dancing it out on their own. No idea what one of the guys was thinking, but he was definitely listening to Micheal Jackson in his head! Even had a stint of 4 dogs having a dance…until they got chased off. Watched until 9:30 wishing I could dance - put it on the long list of things to achieve before die - then headed back to hostel. V.diligently, wrote diary for longer than planned, then drifted off to sleep at 11. Hate sleeping under
sheet, but would rather sweat to death than be bitten to death!
