Christmas Eve Eve is another beautiful day in paradise. Sunny with a few clouds, about 27 C and nice breeze. We debate whether to rent a scooter and go to the beach but in the end we decide to get the rest of our Christmas groceries at Super Mega since Ian has a scuba appointment tomorrow morning. We are stocking up in preparation for Gord and his friend Marty who arrive tomorrow night. We expect it to be very busy in the store and it was busy, but not crazy. Although we already have our turkey in the fridge defrosting, we still manage to have our largest grocery purchase yet at $150. Needless to say that our fridge and cupboards are very full. We take a taxi back to the condo and while unpacking we notice ... read more

It was a lazy Saturday, still pretty windy but not as much as Friday. I've had a slight sore back, probably due to our couch which is not very comfortable and of course sleeping in different bed. We both find the bed here just fine, but at our age, the change alone is enough to make me a little stiff. There are massage places all over, I head next door to Papa Hogs. At first she has a price list for $50 USD for half an hour, but when I turn away to leave because I'm not going to pay that much, she offers $30, so I agree. Haggling and negotiation of prices is a common practice here in Mexico. It was worth every cent! My back is no longer sore and I feel extremely relaxed. ... read more

There was a lot of talk about the end of the world and you might think we are crazy actually being in the place were that was all predicted, but the only notable event of nature on this day here is wind. Windier than we have seen so far. Ian had planned to go scuba diving in the morning, but it was so rough on the ocean that the harbour is closed except for large cruise ships. A sailboat breaks off it's mooring across the street and lands on the rocks along the beach. This reminds Ian of his work, since he is often called out on similar jobs like this back at home, just before we left, he and John had conducted a very similar rescue on the East shores of Kootenay Lake for a ... read more

We can't believe that three weeks has already gone by, one more week marks the half way point of our trip. Ian went scuba diving this morning and took a refresher course since it has been almost 20 years since he got his scuba ticket, that was back when he was living in Hawaii. He had a great time, he says it was the most fun thing he has done since we got here. Cozumel has the Number 1 reef for scuba diving in all of North America, which is one of the main draws to attract the tourists here, that besides the great weather, beautiful beaches, wonderful food and friendly people. The reefs stretch pretty much along the West Coast and we are lucky that part of it is right across the street. He is ... read more

The island of Cozumel is not really that big, about 48 km (30 miles) long and 16 km (10 miles) wide. It's Mexico's largest carribean island. Most of the population is in San Miguel as I've previously mentioned, then the rest appears to be spread out along the West Coast of the Island, the side closest to the Mainland. The main road runs right along the coast line, this is the road our condo is on and where we do most of our walking, it has a nice wide sidewalk. The interior of the Island is very dense jungle. Even here in our condo, the next lot over is empty and incredibly overgrown by jungle. It must have been quite a job at one point to carve through that for development. There are more scooters and ... read more

Since our washing machine is not working, we had been handwashing a few things but finally our landlady, Cecilia came by with a key to an empty suite where we could use a washer. The settings are all written in spanish so I sit there with my spanish to english app and try to translate what they mean. Some of the settings take over an hour to complete per load and no matter which setting I use the laundry all ends up soaking wet. Then the dryer, no matter which setting is used, barely gets hot at all, it would take hours if not days to dry things that way. We manage to get everything washed and hung up to dry, but this laundry business is something we won't bother with again. There are places dowtown ... read more

We decided to check out some new beaches since we still have our rental car, we had already drove into Alberto's beach club, taken a look and turned around and left. It was really small and secluded and really didn't look very clean. A sign that said 'wear bare feet at your own risk' gave me a bad feeling. So we drove to the very end of the beach district to the furthest beach club called Playa Palancar. It was a long gravel road driveway to get in, but then we ended up at a really nice little beach area, almost as nice as Punta Sur. Unlike Paradise Beach, where we have frequented, there is no pool or manicured lawn but we both really liked it. It was clean and a little more authentic Mexican. A ... read more

Today we go back to Less Pay to rent another car for a couple of days. We meet the owner, John Devries, a real good old boy from Arkansas, big belly and sloppy appearance. We were not impressed as he kept us waiting for over half an hour, actually we were just walking out when he showed up. This time we get a Volkswagen City which looks pretty nice in the photo but in reality it is a piece of junk. Everything has been stripped long ago, the glove box is gone, radio gone, speakers gone and the windshield wipers have a mind of their own so most of the time they are on even though we have turned them off. So it is basically sunny and hot with no threat of rain and we are ... read more

The nice weather is back, yay!! We go for our longest walk so far. We walked from our condo along the ocean downtown as far as the shopping district goes. Then we start back along the back streets. On the airplane on the way here, the guy sitting next to me said he had been to Cozumel about 20 times, he mentioned his favorite restaurant here was La Lobsteria. Ian and I had seen this restaurant on our walk before, a little off the beaten path, nothing too fancy, so we decided to stop in for lunch. Ian had lobster tacos and I had lobster pasta. Our waiter didn't speak much English. I was expecting pasta with some kind of sauce (hopefully not too spicy) and some pieces of lobster but I got a whole lobster ... read more

It was a very rainy morning, the kind of rain you don't see very often, the kind that comes down so hard and so fast that the drains can't keep up. Our pool was even overflowing. Our maid came in the morning so we were watching TV in the living room. I had left the bedroom window open and didn't notice how much water was coming in. I went in the bedroom where the maid was cleaning to find about an inch of water on the floor. She was cleaning it up with a large squeegy, dust pan and bucket. I grabbed a mop to try to help, what a mess. We felt bad about the extra work for her. To give her some space, we tried Gerry B's suggestion about the chicken fajitas at Hog ... read more
