Since we still have our scooter for one more day we decide to go and check out a little town about half an hour south of here called El Cedral. It was one of the first inhabitted towns on the Island, we guess back in the 1700's. There is even one small Mayan ruin left. Today, there are some permanent residents while others from San Miguel have weekend homes there. It's a quiet place, we like it. Some of the yards are immaculate. Most seem large and some are very well taken care of. There is much less litter in this small town than the city. There is no ocean as the town is inland by about 15 minutes. We drive around the streets on our scooter which are not paved. We stop for a drink ... read more

Since Ian has rented a scooter, it's easier for us to get around and get things done. We need to exchange some US money into pesos. This is a great way to save money around here. It's ok to use US money at Super Mega or Chedraui for groceries as they give a fair exchange, but if you use US money at stores and cabs, they often give you 10% exchange as opposed to 12% you will get at the bank. The banks are all busy with locals exchanging their money. Some banks have limits of how much you can exchange, so we end up going to two different banks. We wanted to have another look at the Mercada Municipal while everything is open so we go back there for a better look. It's easy to ... read more

We decide to check out the Mercado Municpal (Municipal Market,) it's basically a local market somewhat similar to Granville Island in Vancouver. Stands sell fish, meat, fruit and veg, restaurants, sandels, clothing and so forth, it is very local oriented as opposed to tourist oriented. We didn't know exactly where it was so we took a cab there, it turned out only to be about 5 or so blocks off the main street down the road near the ferry to Playa del Carmen. As it is New Year's day, most of the stands are closed so we will have to come back another day to buy some fresh fish and veg. It's open daily from 8 am to noon. Interesting to discover something new. We walk around downtown for a bit. Lots of the local stores ... read more

We are already half-way on our trip, one month gone, one month to go. We can't believe how fast it's gone. We both still have sore throats, but they are improving so that's a good sign. There are lots of new people in our condo now, most are Canadians, one couple from Kelowna, another from Ontario, one guy from the USA. The number of Canadians here I think speak to our stronger economy over the USA, isnt' today the fiscal cliff in the States? It was pretty much same last year in Costa Rica, loads of Canadians and fewer Americans. With all the new people here, it will definitely be more lively around the pool and barbeque area. Ian and I need to walk more and swim more and cut back on our diet if we ... read more

Sundays are our favorite day here because it is so much less busy as no cruise ships come into port. When you think about it, we see between 4 and 7 ships each day, so if each ship has an average of even 3,000 people as a modest count, that's 12,000 - 21,000 people visiting here for the day everyday. No wonder they need over 600 taxis and every place gets so packed! Most mornings by time we get up, there are already a couple of ships here, they generally arrive very early, then leave around dinner although some will stay until midnight. There are two ports (International Port and Puerto Maya) that hold four ships right near our condo so we can watch those ships come and go, then another port downtown that holds two ... read more

The number one question we've been asked so far by friends and acquaintences is whether we feel safe here, and we really do. Of course we've all heard some stories about Mexico and there may be some areas of this country less safe than others, but here on Cozumel Island, we have felt very safe at all times. Whether walking or driving, we think this place is great and totally safe. Obviously the tourist areas are higher end than the back streets and I have felt a little uncomfortable at times in some areas but we are in a new place after all so that's perfectly normal. In reality, we've been in worse neighbourhoods on a recent trip to St. Louis and in some parts of Surrey and Vancouver like West Hastings. Cozumel is not Balfour, ... read more

There is nothing Ian and I can do to stop Gord and Marty from renting Harley's, we try to talk them out of it but there's no use. All you need is a valid driver's license and a credit card. Gord gets a bigger one while Marty gets a smaller one. Leaving the parking lot, Gord proceeds to stall his bike, Marty pops the clutch on his and ends up going out into traffic the wrong way which scares the crap out of him. He manages to turn around and they both slowly make their way a couple of blocks back to the condo trying to look as cool as possible I'm sure. Their first mission is to take their laundry to the laundry mat about 5 blocks away. Somehow Gord loses his key there, so ... read more

It is a pretty cloudy day, the boys return our rental jeep and do some shopping downtown for a while. We pick up our laundry from a little place in what I refer to as 'the bad part of town.' It's really not, it's just the outskirts, but I call it that as the buildings are tagged with grafitti and most of the businesses are closed, definitetly appears rougher area than other areas and still some nice properties intersperced. Our laundry never looked so good, everything is clean, folded and almost seems like it was pressed. Two large loads for $7. I wish we had something like that at home, I'd never do laundry again. Ian isn't feeling that great as he is having some trouble with his sinus. We all take a siesta in the ... read more

When the boys were downtown on Christmas, one of the sales people trying to lure them into a store called Gord 'Rambo' and the nickname has really stuck. He's gained some weight since we've last seen him and his muscles are huge and hair very short! Marty, on the other hand, wasn't feeling too good for a couple of days when he first got here, so he's picked up the nick name, 'Hurt Boy.' Not sure who gave him that, probably Ian. Luckily it wasn't anything serious and Marty's feeling better now. It's tons of fun having them both here. We decide to rent a jeep, so Ian and the boys head out to ask around at a few places, then finally they setttle on a one day rental some place downtown. No sooner do they ... read more

Merry Christmas!! Ian went scuba diving Christmas Eve, he did two dives, one 90 ft and the other 60 ft. He had a great time even though he was the least experienced diver on the boat with 16 divers. They went further south than Punta Sur and we learned there are 23 reefs along the coast here and for many, this is the best diving in the world. He saw lots of neat stuff down there. He was gone from 8 am to 2 pm. We skype with Miranda and her kids, who are back home from Orlando. Those babies are the cutest! Gord and Marty arrive on Christmas eve around 9:30 pm having just caught the last ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel. We are happy to have Gord here to celebrate Christmas in ... read more
