After a hectic first few weeks here I have not really done anything this week other than take in the scenery, wonder along the sunny sections of street to work and back and watch movies in the evenings. When I am not swimming in the pool or thinking about making my way down to the gym. This has not just transformed from thinking about it into actually going down to use it. During my wonderings I have found a great arts centre, that I can see from the balcony where I can do a selection of, learning how to blow my own glass, In a day, to throwing and firing my own pots followed by decorating the said pot and onto designing jewelry after one weekend you are supposed to come out with a ring, ... read more

Wow it is amazing how quickly the date for leaving is coming up. I will be flying out of Pearson and flying via Italy to Accra. From there we will head north to Tamale where I will meet the long-term volunteer for more specific training. The pre-departure learning is intense and am living with 26 people. I have learned so much and find myself reflecting on the many changes that I have made. As a group, I am noting how much our skills are growing. The issue of poverty is so complex and I am finding that some of the absolutes that I thought I had are far more ambiguous. We had Ghanian food last night for the first time. There were many items I really enjoyed and some that will take some getting used to. ... read more

Said goodbye to Ange early and to Andy and Alain at the airport. Tough security at the LA airport with everyone removing shoes belts etc. Found a network for the computer but ran out of time to subscribe before we were called to board. Less than impressed by our first encounter with Air Canada. An international flight lasting 4 hours and 45 minutes leaving LA at 12.15 pm and we had to pay for food. A grumpy taxi driver finally got us to our B&B and we were welcomed by the "boys" Frank & Tan. Tomorrow we take a tour to Niagara Falls. Will post photos from there with next blog entry. ... read more

Well, the time has come. We fly out today around lunch time, stop in Newark for seven hours (how very exciting), and then get on our non stop to Delhi. It's going to be a very long day, but at least we are getting in at night and will be able to crash when we arrive. We are both very excited, and we will be sure to update this page as often as we can find reliable internet. We will miss you all very much, David and Heidi... read more

OHIP (oh hip) On Tuesday evening, I went to visit my aunty Mavis (who lives over here) on the GO train that has 2 levels and I went to sit on the top one purely for the novelty factor, occasional views of the lake but mostly Toronto suburbia that is a selection of muted coloured houses and no actual back gardens, just land around ‘you property’ all houses are built in different styles, no housing estates here. But lots of tower blocks, disguised as ‘condo living’. She (Mavis) was coming into ‘the city’ to take her new 6 month old puppy ‘intro’ to puppy class. (Training for guide dogs) I joined the class as we ‘all 19 puppies and various owners and friends of, walked down the main street of a small town called Oakville. ... read more

so after my long hard first stressful week of work! Mathew and I headed down to a 'patio' area of a bar (seats outside on the pavement), where in 3 hours I drank a few beers and got more of a suntan than I have ever got after a full day of Scottish sun. although I did not apply lotion and closely resembled a tomato (tomaedo)... Toronto news van was parked on the street with all its satellite dishes and cameras and then we realised that to 'capture the atmosphere the news man would be broadcasting from the patio. lipstick out; 'hello mum' handwritten on napkins we were all ready for 'action' in all we were 'live' 3 times each time more amusing than the first and slightly redder. one week and I am already ... read more

Alright, I'm all packed. I don't know if you can actually call what I am as 'packed' though. I have a pair of capris, a pair of modrobes, a dry-fit long sleeve shirt, pair of shorts and swimsuit. Oh and three pairs of underwear. All set for two months? SURE!......Oh boy. What am I getting myself into? Please leave comments when you visit the blog. I'd love to read them.... read more

UntitledBarbara Smatlanek A lone mallard duck sat at the edge of the sidewalk in this Scarborough neighbourhood. The creek that once was, has been encroached upon and made almost non-existant by ugly new houses built about two years ago. These houses obscure the sunrise and have no architectural saving graces. The duck was alone. No sign of a female. The only open body of water in the vicinity is a small artificial pond created by the ugly house developer. Perhaps a nest is to be found there. No fish live in the pond. Thankfully ducks do not eat fish; just green stuff like their distant relatives, the Canada Geese. These creatures too are in an area that used to have water and now has nothing but rock, gravel and parking lot. Yet the faithful fowl return ... read more

666 was great! perfect view of the city from the penthouse old 60's building and a 'flatmate called rebecca!' very tempted untill... i walked into a condo at queens quay. with a floor to ceiling lake view from the lounge, cn tower view from the bedroom window, indoor/outdoor swimming pool, gym, 2 saunas, steam room, sundeck, private BBQ area, pool room with 2 full size tables and HUGE tv for movies that you can use when ever you want. party rooms that can be booked free of charge, yoga and pilates studio, basically just like a luxuary hotel with lobby downstairs and massive fish tank and a 'concierge'. there is no tv in the lounge so that no one can monopolise it and more importantly no one can watch sport! sharing with 2 others, adam and ... read more
