After a hectic first few weeks here I have not really done anything this week other than take in the scenery, wonder along the sunny sections of street to work and back and watch movies in the evenings. When I am not swimming in the pool or thinking about making my way down to the gym. This has not just transformed from thinking about it into actually going down to use it.
During my wonderings I have found a great arts centre, that I can see from the balcony where I can do a selection of, learning how to blow my own glass, In a day, to throwing and firing my own pots followed by decorating the said pot and onto designing jewelry after one weekend you are supposed to come out with a ring, of sorts. Am tempted by all of them but I think the most exciting one would be glass blowing! I can already see my own range of ‘hand made’ ‘glasswear’ in a boutique somewhere fancy by the water… maybe the will be my thing to do in June. I think that’s when the next available slots are.
My local police station is the
water police, whose boats look like something that a ‘baddie’ would be in on a James bond movie, and they come out of a secret section of the harbor (harbour) at high speed. And have blue lights on the ends of black poles like the lego police men used to have on the lego bikes.
I had pedicure, ready for the continual sandle weather. Apparently if you have one good pedicure at the start of summer that’s you set for the season! While in rome! So I am now ‘pedi ready’ for summer. My feet will have been scrubbed of all deadskin and dipped in hot parafin wax, massged, cut filed and polished. Which would be great to show off if only I hadn’t dropped an iron on my foot 2 days ago which has now caused ‘extensive’ bruising across the top of the right foot. Right next to the toes that will be displaying the best pedicure they have ever seen! And just for fun I am getting a manicure too although they don’t do feet and hands at the same time?
I did another grocery store shop (supermarket) and this time bought huge items and caught
a cab (taxi) back. I came away with the biggest bottle of bartenders ceaser mix, which is actually the smallest one they do, it takes up almost a quarter of the shelf in the fridge, but tastes amazing. I got the celery salts too. which is called ceaser rimmer! Which Adam ‘roomie’ (flatmate) aged 25 finds as funny as me, aged 3!
Did you know air conditioning makes your ears pop? Like in a plane when the pressure changes. I go deaf on a regular basis and have started to ‘equalise’ (blowing air through ears when nose is pinched) each time the air kicks in! slightly annoying.
The sun is shining and I no longer need to take a coat out with me in the morning. The weather man tells me in the morning before leaving the house, but I now stand on the balcony and take in the view before leaving work and if I come back in without goose bumps on my arms I don’t take a coat with me! Have also worked out which way to walk to and from work so that I am always walking in the sunshine. The buildings are so tall here
that sometimes the streets are always in the shade. I will probably find another way to get to and from work when the sunshine is too hot to walk in and I will need that shade. I have my south and north sorted, and now I just have to remember which way is west/east. Still looking for a pocket sized compass.
My ‘things’ are on a ship somewhere on their way and will arrive at the end of the month. Now I need to find an ikea and buy a bookcase. Although I am not sure yet how I will get a bookcase on the bus home. Will have to do an ikea recky before all the books arrive so that I have somewhere to put the 4 boxes that are full of them.
My ‘permenant residents card’ arrived this morning so I am all official now. But best of all I can go through the short ‘locals’ que at the airport instead of standing for hours at immigration with all the Ukers. Which I will try out in June when I am back in Scotland for jac’s 5th birthday and mums wedding. Flying visit for only 4
days and will spend most of it trying to stay awake! Looking forward to stocking up on proper tea bags to bring back with me!
At the weekend I explored the lake front walks and the beaches, where ther seemed to be far too many yappy dogs being walked or carried in stupid dog 'handbags', rode the street car and made the grave mistake of thinking that as the sun was shinning it would be warm, so dressed in my summer Birkenstocks displayed bruises and polised toes and t shirt realized that the temp was only 17 degrees and I was freezing. Toes went numb and turned blue so back home for a sauna to warm myself up. Temps have risen now to a comfortable 24degrees.
