Niagara Falls is two hours south of Toronto, and an easy drive, but in January 2014 the land below the escarpment offers no escape from Canada's cold winter climate. Rather, this destination embraces the season. The waterfalls roar even loader in the arctic air, and the falling vapors make these weird and wonderful balls of ice around the base in a frozen scene that could only be imagined by science fiction writers. I wished i had a longer lens so I could get closer... There’s tons of fun things to do in Niagara Falls and we had an hour or more to pass before a big truck full of stuff was due to arrive. This moving truck was to be unloaded at the back of a nearby building. Helene has always wanted to see the local ... read more

So, our traveling has begun, except it has been limited to wineries in Niagara on the Lake over the past two weekends. During the first weekend of November, I went to Niagara with 12 other women, including close friend Jennifer Alsop, to visit as many wineries as we could during a seven hour period. That number ended up being 20!!!!! Twenty wineries in seven hours. I am pretty sure we were chugging our samples of wine near the end. I say "pretty sure" because I can't really remember. Lots of laughs and I really appreciated being invited. Great fun. Then, last weekend, my dear Paul surprised me with a weekend in Niagara with our closest friends Brent and Sophia. We were picked up by the Taylors and made the journey to Niagara together. We checked in ... read more

This entry will have two days of my exploration in Canada, this is because I really didn't get to do much due to the wedding. However, it was still a great experience and I will definitely go back to Canada to re-explore it. 10/4/13 I woke up the next day and it was my uncle who would be my mother, brother and I's tour guide around Canada since my cousin would be busy running around getting the wedding ready for the next day. We first went over to the church where my cousin would get married just to set up some stage decorations, they were this fake trees that light up due to the many light bulbs on its stem. After a good hour of setting up these trees around the stage, the ladies of the ... read more

Excitement, thats what was fueling me as I rolled myself out of bed at 4 in the morning and got myself ready for my travels. Everything I needed was packed into my backpack and waiting for me near the door, so why did I still have that nagging feeling that I was forgetting something? I brushed it off as normal pre-travel worry. It wasn't until I was in the shuttle ride down to the airport that it finally dawned on me, I forgot my headphones. Crap. The day had finally come, I was going to be leaving the country, crossing places off of my list, and finally get to get some stamps on my passport! The shuttle ride down took maybe 30 mins longer than if I had driven myself due to the fact that the ... read more

It was in 1996 when I first time went to Ontario province in Canada as a goodwill ambassador through Group Study Exchange programme of Rotary International. I visited several cities in Ontario province including Burlington, Woodstock, and Niagara falls etc. Researches being conducted to control water quality standards at Burlington really impressed me. Work at factories of Ingersol and Timberjack enabled me to see the high end machinery. Canadian flags flying out of may homes attracted me; as we also see them in many parts of USA. Toronto tower and adjoing sports stadium are really big achievements and my first step on the glass floor at Toronto Tower, first time enabled me to feel a feeling close to acrophobia, though within seconds it was gone!. I was told that the glass floor, a favorite place with ... read more

Aug. 26, 2013 Grateful for Shuttle-U in Prescott that picked us up at our home and delivered us to the Best Western at the airport in Phoenix. Nice to be able to leave the car in our garage and not worry about it being parked at the airport for six weeks. We were up at the ridiculous hour of 3 AM for our uneventful, almost comfortable flights to Charlotte, NC, and Detroit, MI. We stayed at the Four Points Sheraton in Romulus, MI which was filled with airline personnel and the four friendly people on our shuttle to the hotel were all from Phoenix and one guy grew up in Prescott. His last name was "Fain," a name that is well known to my Prescott readers. We searched Trip Advisor and found the #1 rated restaurant ... read more

When:2nd - 3rd August 2013 Where: Niagara Falls Highlights: N/A Prelude: I have been avoiding to visit the Niagara falls for the last 10 years. I am not a big fan of doing touristy stuff and this would be #1 on the "Top 10 places to see in North America". G has been to NY and Niagara falls(on the US side) Sep 2011. So, he was willing to see the more beautiful Canadian side. As for me, there was no way I could escape from it due to our current residency in Toronto. But as much as I agreed to go, I had already framed my judgement about the place. Not a good mindset to make a trip with! Ironically, we ended up making the trip twice, less than 2 weeks apart!!! How do we describe Niagara Falls? Like Las Vegas with giant waterfalls. Once you get past the tacky, glitzy town and casinos you get to the falls. Firstly we had a ride on the Skywheel , a ferris wheel structure which gave us a great view of the falls. We then went down to get on the boat for the Maid of the Mist tour. There are lines of people for the boat ride but it moves quickly. You are given a blue poncho in anticipation of the drenching you are going to get and loaded onto the Maid of the Mist boats. After stopping for the obligatory souvenir photograph we were loaded onto the boats with about 600 other participants and taken out to the falls. We were lucky to have a very still morning for ... read more

Day 15 - July 11, 2013 We awoke to a brilliant Thursday morning in Canada. A big difference from the weather we became accustomed to over the last few days. This was going to be another of those BIG days, sightseeing in Niagara Falls then driving through New York and back to Reading all before our heads hit the pillows again. We checked out of the hotel and went down the street about a block to the IHOP. It wasn’t too full, but for whatever reason, the service was very slow. It took us an hour for breakfast, we were not happy. Since we’ve been here before and had a full day of sightseeing at that time, our plan today was to take the trip behind the falls and have lunch in the Syklon ... read more
