As regular readers of this travel blog will probably recall, my last published scribblings covered our amazing trip out east to Indochina and before that our incredible adventure (also, in an easterly direction) to Australia and New Zealand. But, for 2019 we thought that it was time for a change; time to escape the tortuous grind of the 'Deal or No Deal' Brexit; time to erase from the memory, the embarrassing spectacle of which Prime Ministerial hopeful managed to smoke, inject or inhale the most illicit drugs in their past; and time to troll off to some place, where drinking a milkshake is considered more fun than chucking them about!! And with that in mind, it was no contest really. We simply decided to take the advice of American author Horace Greeley from 1865 and slightly ... read more

What a difference a day makes to the weather! Today was cold but dry, clear, sunny with a bright blue sky. Just perfect for our trip to Niagara! The Falls are about 150 kilometres from Toronto and the bus journey takes about two hours. When we got to Niagara, John and I just looked at each other in dismay: “they have ruined it” we said. The main street down to the Falls Parkway is much more depressing than the Lonely Planet indicated; at eye level one is greeted by amusement arcades, funfair rides, cheap gambling joints, some sleazy-looking accommodation and the all-important photo opportunity with a life-sized plaster statue of Jack Sparrow! Johnny Dep, not your fault but what the hell has “Pirates of the Caribbean” got to do with Niagara? Look ... read more

Rain, rain - was raining when we got up this morning, and still raining when we finished breakfast, could barely see the falls out the window. Decided to wait a little while before heading to the "Journey to the Falls Boat Cruise". There has been a constant stream of people in rain ponchos (red for the Canadian side, blue for the US side) coming and going from these boats since we got here. There are four boats that go all day, 2 from the Canadian side and two from the US side, and the Canadian ones run at night as well (must be making a fortune). They seem to be in synch, only one is right up at the Horseshoe Falls at a time, and only one on each side is docked at any time. Walked ... read more

Goodbye NYC, had a ball, don't think I could live here, so busy, all the time. Walking the footpaths is next to impossible, and crossing the road, not for the faint hearted! Our airport transfer arrived on time this morning, no drama like when we arrived. Lots of traffic on the way to Newark, but still there in plenty of time for our flight to Toronto (on a much smaller plane than we have had so far). Airport transfer all went smoothly in Toronto as well, but traffic between Toronto and Niagara Falls was pretty bad. Took us close to 2 hours, but all worth it when we looked out the window of our hotel room with a view! Could see all the falls, the American, the Bridal Veil, and the Horseshoe. And also the Rainbow ... read more

I arrived at Niagara Falls today. Once I crossed the boarder into Canada and then went through Canadian Customs, I went straight to my hotel and room. My room was on the 18th floor with a fantastic view right over the Falls. It was amazing. I soon walked down to the Falls and walked along the river to the boats. On the Canadian side, the tour is on a Hornblower boat. The tour was very exciting being so close to the rushing water. Yes, my face and head got soaked. After the boat ride, I walked around and explored the area. Had a great dinner at the Morton Steakhouse in the Marriott. Yes, I ate too much. The next morning, I went to the Falls again and down an elevator to a level near the bottom ... read more

Niagara Falls always had such a romantic air to it. The kind of place you go for a proposal or to take super adorable photos with your long-time beau. That's how I imagined I'd end up there - probably a weekend trip using a Groupon Getaways deal. But Prince Charming never came (or if he did, I promptly pushed him away), so I took myself. Ithaca, NY is only about 4 hours from Niagara Falls, Ontario. After our Bachelorette Weekend group ate wayyy too many carbs and checked-out, I checked out Cascadilla Falls and Ithaca Falls, then had a dirty chai and brunch snack at Moosewood Restaurant (the hip vegan spot in downtown Ithaca). When I hit the road toward Niagara, I had planned to stop in Rochester, NY for a break, but by the time ... read more

Waterfalls This blog covers our time spent in Canada seeing the amazing Niagara falls. A long day of flying from L.A. through Chicago and into Buffalo is how we spent the 3rd of November. Arriving in Buffalo was a pleasant surprise, the lush green landscape, the reds, yellows and oranges of the Autumn trees, the quiet upstate New York feel of the neighborhood was just the change of pace needed after the last few crazy days. I felt as though this is a place I could comfortably live if I was ever to move to the States. We were all exhausted and Alysha and her Mum and Brother all had a cold so we decided to make tomorrow a lazy day. We hit the hay and didnt rise until around 10 the next day. It's amazing ... read more
