Day 14 - July 10, 2013 Another day of driving and seeing the world. We left our happy hotel a bit later than we had hoped, but we had a relaxing breakfast so it was worth it. We headed out from Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and crossed the International Bridge into Ontario, Canada. We were able to see the locks and rapids from above as we crossed the bridge. The driving went well and the scenery was beautiful. Just before our turn south in Sudbury, ON, we saw a sign and had to stop. How can you come to Canada without eating Tim Horton Donuts? We stopped for two, but were told by a very persuasive sales lady that it is cheaper to buy a half dozen, so with a box of six tucked ... read more

Geo: 43.1066, -79.0642Today we were at the beautiful site of Niagara Falls. As this was such a popular tourist location we firstly wanted to head to the Maid of the Mist. We bought our tickets, picked up our souvenir ponchos and climbed onboard. We choose to stand right at the front at the bow of the boat and we got underway. The falls were spectacular and being so close to them was immense. We headed into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls and we got soaked, but our ponchos saved us! Back on dry land we walked up the street and headed to Denny's for a spot of breakfast. We then decided to go on the Sky Wheel which was a 175 foot tall ferris wheel which promised views over Niagara Falls. It didn't let us ... read more

This Butterfly Conservatory is a delightful place. Located at the Niagara Parks Botanical Gardens, it has three levels, a huge assortment of plants and flowers in a lush, tropical setting, and contains between 2 and 3 thousand butterflies depending on the time of the year. At present, the Conservatory has around 45 species of butterflies, mostly non-native according to my cousin, Lyn Atherton, a well known "butterfly person" who looked at my photos. (Lyn is also a "bird-spider-and-other-unusual-bugs person.") These photos are nothing like as sharp as Lyn's photos. But they're the best I could take considering that I didn't have a tripod or a macro lens. It's the colors and designs that I find so wonderful, particularly how the butterflys' colors so often match the flowers they favor. Look at #9 and how that butterfly ... read more

Hi, All -- Considering that Bob and I got married on this trip, it seemed appropriate that we spend a little time at Niagara Falls, that well known honeymoon place. I wonder if people still honeymoon there . . . The Maid of the Mist vessels, and we could see four -- two on the Canadian side and two on the US side, have been transporting people under the falls since 1854. The first Maid started as a ferry service between the Canadian and American sides in 1846, but after the first Niagara Falls Suspension Bridge was built at the site, the Maid became a tourist attraction instead. Not only did we spend time at the falls, we also visited the Niagara Botanical Gardens, although most of the flowers had faded away by the time we ... read more

One of the key things that I had been doing since stepping off the train in Toronto was tracking what was happening with Hurracaine Sandy. Toronto was expecting to get some bad weather, however nothing in comparison with what was going to hit the US. I had booked to go on a bus tour to Niagara Falls on Tuesday morning, and with Sandy expected to hit land in the early evening of Monday many were asking me whether I should delay my my trip. Most were concerned that given the rain was expected to continue to fall I might not have very good weather, or visibility. When the storm did hit Toronto it was quite fierce, rain was pelting down and the winds were quite strong, the next morning I could see quite a bit of ... read more

Following a simply stunning scenic train journey, even if at nine and half hours it got slightly repetitive, we arrived in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Having heard from several sources the Canadian side was better we were eager to go and face the thunderous Falls sooner rather than later. We cleared customs fairly quickly and hopped in a taxi to our hotel. Back in the UK we made the decision with Ben's folks to get a great view of the Falls from our hotel room even with this the room was considerably cheaper than any room you can get in NYC! We arrived at our 33rd floor room and gaped at the view before us! We had barely seen the Falls as we arrived as our taxi driver turned uphill away from the river just as they ... read more

After a restful night sleep and a great breakfast we anxiously awaited the arrival of my cousin David, his wife Zoe and their daughter Caitlin. They rang to let us know they were running late so after taking a few photos from our room 6 floors up with uninterrupted views of the falls we finished packing and headed downstairs to wait their arrival. As we hopped off the elevator we met the three Canadians, well bumped in to and nearly walked over the top of them LOL. A warm and friendly greeting over and done with the 5 of us headed off to look at the Niagara Falls. The falls are simply stunning, on a par with the Grand Canyon for stunning beauty but they have the falls have their own uniqueness and beauty so the ... read more

Up at 5am this morning to depart San Francisco at 7:40am. You really do need to allow yourself plenty of time when checking in at US airports. The locals kind of shrug it off but all the Aussies we have met in our travels have all found it the most negative part of travelling here. I guess the consolation prize is that once you are through all the security you are travelling with a lot of peace of mind there will be no trouble enroute. The service from United was actually pretty good. We left right on time and flew in to Washington DC for a change to a smaller jet for the trip to Buffalo, NY. Both services were on time departing and arriving, the service on board was friendly enough. The negative was the ... read more

And we are back in Canada, for a day - to view the Niagara Falls. The view is so much better from the Canadian side as one can see all three falls, collectively known as Niagara Falls. It is made up of the American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and Canada Falls. Bridal Veil Falls is a very narrow falls between the two bigger ones. We walked right up to the brink of the Canadian Falls, the water just endlessly pours over the edge and somehow I expected it to stop at some point or dry up. These majestic falls create a huge spray cloud that can really soak a person! American Falls is about 53m high but due to loose rocks at the bottom the actual height is only 21meters, to get a better view of ... read more
