The former rancher town of Calgary is riding that bucking bronco all the way to a prosperous future. There are vast reserves of oil shale in Alberta and the province is booming, while dealing with the associated problems of rapid population growth. Since ancient times, however, man has chased the dream of making a personal fortune, and the oil game is no different to any other. Calgary was the host of the 1988 Winter Olympics, and still respects it’s cowboy traditions which culminates in the raucous Calgary Stampede every summer. Cowtown's annual 10-day Stampede is the greatest outdoor celebration in the world, and it would be great to come and visit during the festival. But on this occasion winter's in full swing, as I rode the Greyhound from Banff to Calgary for two action packed days ... read more

Have a nice day? Another thing that strikes the first time European visitor across the Atlantic is just how amazing the customer service is. We were expecting this: a plastic smile from a have-a-nice-day automat that you see in the movies. But actually I thought that Canadian version of this was that they really gave the impression that they really cared. It didn't seem plastic at all. I'm sure some of this has something to do with the tipping: 15-20 per cent in restaurants is standard; at bars you leave a dollar a drink. At one bar in Montreal we forgot ourselves and without leaving a penny we ordered a second round of beers. Shame! We were politely but firmly ordered that we'd better pay the pourboire this time or we weren't getting anything! But just ... read more

This trip was very exciting. At first I thought my family and my friends were just going to go Cherry picking, but we pushed our trip a little farther. We were on our way driving to the cherry fields, as we saw some interesting buildings such as the CN tower, the hershy factory, etc. We finally arrived there, and there was alot of cherry trees. We all picked as much as we wanted, some of us jumped up to catch some. After the cherry picking we left for another place. We ate our cherries along the way until we arrived at an interesting landmark, the giant clock fountain. We stopped by the fountain and there were some goldfish swimming in the fountain, but i didnt pay much attension to them, I was talking to my friends ... read more

In the first week of october my Natural Disasters class went on a feild trip to see the niagra falls. When we arrived we went and looked at the falls for about 30 minutes then headed closer to them to go on the"behind the falls adventure". unfortunatly the weather wasn't being fair to us and we could do that. so we eventually ended seeing a movie in 3D about the falls and how they were made over the centuries. after that we had lots of free time to wonder around and learn for our selves about the falls. if there was one thing i wish we could of done was go on the made of the mist but the dock got flooded because of all the rainfall the night before.i find the niagra falls to be ... read more

Today we were on a mission to discover how does the northern border of US works. We took a bus from Buffalo to the town Niagara Falls and there we headed to the Rainbow bridge. After finding out that only with motorized vehicles can shop in duty free, we went on the other side as pedestrians to Canada and there was no tax free shop. Against former experiences we could make pictures on the border and on top of that the officials were extremely friendly. Since the border is a tourist attraction we needed to pay 50 cents per person to return to US. Our time in Canada (app. 3 hours) was very nice. We had a lovely walk next to the falls and got free hot chocolate to enjoy the mist from the falls, which ... read more

At last, a beautiful sunny day! My last day in Canada and the day of my trip to see the legendary Niagara Falls - I couldn’t have asked for better weather. I decided to go with a tour package as the public transport options to the area aren’t brilliant and I did have a plane to catch that evening! Because I’m lazy, I organised the tour through the hotel and ended up with CU Tours. Possibly not the cheapest, but it seemed to cover the major sights. We were picked up by our minibus bright and early and off we went. Our driver/guide gave a running commentary as we went - half of which I ignored as I was just watching the world go by! But there were some interesting snippets (which I clearly can’t remember ... read more

Den ... read more

On October 7th 2009, Birchmount's Travel&tourism and Natural Disasters class decided to go to the beautiful Niagara Falls for a class trip. We all loaded the bus at 8am sharp, and got on the road. It was a long 2 hour drive, but most of us got some sleep. As we arrived, the weather was horrible. It was cold and very rainy, so we couldn't go on the maid of the mist as planned. We all went into a building with gift shops and decided to go see a movie. Niagara's Fury was a 4D movie that brought you inside the falls and taught you about it. The movie was pretty cool because the stand moved and it got you wet, but i wouldn't recommend it to an older audience. I think it was more based ... read more

My trek to Niagara falls started off with a very early mourning having to be at school for 7:50 am which is normally when I get up to get ready for school. Once arriving at school a few minutes late I met up with Sam, Andrew S and Cam because we were chosen to drive up in Ms Brown’s car. Driving up was a long ride because off all the traffic and having to sit next to Sam. I was a little bit scared for the first half an hour while driving up with the teacher because I thought it was going to be like torture with a tone of lectures and no fun or laughing but I have got to say it was a lot better then that. We passed the time by doing riddles ... read more
