047 - USA - New York 03/25/09 - 04/09/09 New York: A city, a mountain house, and a waterfall New York is one of those truly unique places in the world. The City radiates energy, sometimes good, other times not, that grabs you the moment you step onto that grate-filled sidewalk and get brushed between a high-heeled power suit and an off-duty Pakistani cabbie. Your neck creaks and your eyes absorb the concrete stimulation, while your stomach and $30 drop as you pay for those two martinis at the hidden neighborhood watering hole. It's exhilarating, it's intoxicating, and it's the reason many call New York City the capital of the world! As if that weren't enough, New York state offers you green rural areas, mountainous villages, an international border with Mounties on the other side, and ... read more

Hello, After a very late, slow and delicate start (a result of the lads late night out in Toronto the previous night), we all drove down to Niagra (the two lads half asleep, groaning and feeling rough for the entire hour and a half journey)…. We first headed for Niagra on the Lake which is about half an hour from the famous falls themselves - a very quaint town with some old shops and nice restaurants. As the name suggests it sits right on the lake and we could just see the CN Tower of Toronto across the lake as it was so clear (not that far but a long drive around the lake to get there). We had lunch in an ‘English pub’ which, rather unsurprisingly, was very much like an English pub except with ... read more

We arrived late into Niagara Falls. I blame customs although this time it was the Canadians. It took longer because of ONE person and to make matters worse we weren’t allowed to get off the train until we had their ok. Pfff. Anyway we arrived in sleepy Niagara Falls early evening and made the long walk to the hostel past the bright lights of Clifton Hill (a bit like Las Vegas) and the small amount of people who ventured to Niagara Falls in winter. It was slim pickings that’s for sure. We were greeted by our friendly but slightly strange hostel manager. Everyone was going out for dinner and he wouldn’t take no for an answer. We gathered at 7.30pm - three Aussies, two Dutchies and one strange Canadian. The next day we started late and ... read more

With a tinge of sadness we left Winnipeg and jumped on Via Rail for a 39 hour rail trip to Toronto. While this might sound ghastly, it was made all the better by being able to be in sleeper class. A bed made for you every night, a shower and three cooked meals a day. All we had to do was read, sleep and the proverbial. And we were the youngest there by around 20 years. Travelling by land doesn’t really get much easier than that. Having said that, apparently the trains are European and not really made for Canadian conditions. The shower drain in our car froze closed at one point when Catherine was in it, sending water overflowing all over the floor. Then in the evening the toilets froze and wouldn't flush. They have ... read more

Niagara Falls - another border town, but at the opposite end of the spectrum from Tijuana. The town seemed to have tried to corner the market as Canada’s combined answer to Gretna and Las Vegas. As well as an unparalleled view of the Falls, the opportunity to gamble and tie the knot. The Falls themselves rank in a lowly place in the hierarchy of waterfall height, but represent a pretty impressive wall of water. Whereas our Victoria Falls experience in the “dry” was hardly the smoke that thunders (see Livingstone I Presume) and the Tugela Falls as the second highest waterfall in the world is not exactly immense (see Going over the top in the Drakensberg), the torrents here apparently thunder throughout the year. ... read more

I decided at the last minute to take the kids somewhere fun during the Christmas vacation. Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls, Canada is an indoor water park about 30 minutes from our house but we've never been there before. Lots of kids from my area talk about visiting Splash Lagoon with their families, which is also a waterpark a little further away in Erie, PA. Ever the budget traveler, I decided we'd go to the cheaper of the two and I'm so happy that it turned out to be Great Wolf Lodge. I'm on the mailing list for Splash Lagoon and even though they sent me a flyer with special rates, I didn't find them to be cheaper than Great Wolf Lodge. The first thing GWL had going in its favor was the exchange rate. ... read more

In about 2 months time, I'll be boarding a plane going on a 15 hour journey to Israel for 6 whole months. I am 24 years old, born and raised in Ontario, Canada, not Jewish, have no family there and know (kind of) 3 people in total that live in Israel. The usual reaction I get when I tell someone I'm going to Israel for 6 months by myself is "Are you crazy?" ... The answer to that question is yes but that is not the reason I'm heading on this endeavour. There are quite a few actually... The first and main reason why I'm going is to take a dolphin training course at The Dolphin Reef in Eilat. It has been my dream since I was a little girl to be a dolphin trainer. I ... read more

We had not much planned beforehand, but one thing was certain: we were going to see the Niagara Falls. I've heard about this since I was very small (got a feeling it was from a children's book), so this was an absolute must. There were flyers at the hostel saying that we could go there with a bus for 45 Canadian dollars, but we wanted to check out the train option. We passed some kind of tourist office on the way to Union station, and the lady there tried to sell us a more expensive bus trip than we had seen at the hostel, so we weren't tempted. We like trains. So, the tickets weren't cheap, but we took the train anyway, since I knew I could work in peace on a train, and we wouldn't ... read more

As part of our long weekend, we drove to Niagara falls. We got a free room upgrade from the hotel and had a falls view of the actual horseshoe falls. By the time we got there and were ready to go out, it was pretty late. We walked across the strip and went to the R Lounge for drinks( lounge bar that overlooks the river and falls) and had some nice local wine and tapas ( Niagara does fantastic wine due to the climate of the area). After a few drinks in the local bars, we went late night gamlbling in the Fallsview Casino. It is the same as Las Vegas style gaming and lost a lot of $ in a short time on roulette. The next day we went on the Maid of the ... read more

So we are on our way. Kindly taken by Robin to Heathrow, but it was a bit over the top of him to wear a suit and tie ! And he did go on about Cyprus all the way round the M25. Anyway we get to Toronto and jump in a car for the 2 hour journey to Niagara, only for us to hit the local rush hour and a traffic jam. But when we got to the hotel and opened the curtains - wow - the view of the Horseshoe Falls lit up at night was amazing. Up early the next day - we were first in the queue for the Maid of the Mist, one of 3 boats that travel to the base of the falls. On with our blue ponchos we get on ... read more
