“The world," said St. Augustine, "is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page.” On that note, here is a list of books that peak on their first page: Moby Dick, The Great Gatsby, The Crying of Lot 49, The Rules of Attraction, Fahrenheit 451, Wide Sargosso Sea, and many others, I'm sure. As for the world, one place in which it does not peak is Winnipeg. I know that. You know that. We all KNOW that, as hard (or easy) as it is to admit. Thus, I'm flipping the page. On June 19th I leave for 3 and a half months of......(to be determined). Follow along with me as I rape the world (metaphorically) and travel through at least 15 European countries. My journey will be well, adequetely, or minusculey documented. ... read more

Years ago, if you were to have asked me what kind of traveler I thought I was, I wouldn't have hesitated in bragging that all I needed was my passport, some cash and a smile. Now that my trips can only span weeks instead of months, I still believe all you need is a passport, some cash and a smile... oh and an incredible amount of planning. I envy those that have the time to take a year or more off to indulge the travel bug but for Candace and I, with kids, mortgage and careers we don't yet hate, we can only disappear for three or four weeks at a time. And during those few weeks, we want a variety of opportunities to try and get the most out of an area in the short ... read more

Looking at the fourteen day forecast only confirms that the decision Candace and I made to spend almost $6000.00 the other night wasn't such a bad idea after all. Of course this money could have been used to pay down our mortgage or invest in more RRSPs but who wants to do that? With four round trip tickets paid for, we finally put in motion "The Trip" we had promised our kids over two years ago. On our last adventure, much to their dismay, we opted to enjoy one more trip to the Land of Smiles by ourselves and left them to stay with their grandparents for a month while we lounged on the beach, rode elephants, visited Wats and did all those crazy things that "young" parents do when they are in tropical climes without ... read more

What to say about Winnipeg....It definitely it wasn't what we expected. It's a mix of interesting Historical landmarks, great little markets, Public Park’s, and CRAZY DRIVERS!! Please note, those who intend on driving through Winnipeg, or are planning a visit, put up your guards. The drivers are unlike anything we've ever seen. Now remember, we're been through the states, where the minimum speed limit is the maximum plus 20 or so... but Winnipeg drivers seem to enjoy almost hitting you, cutting you off, and even better, not letting you in a lane... EVER. If planning on merging, blinkers are useless, they in fact prohibit you from merging, it's better to just go and give a pleasant wave (preferably with all fingers showing, not that the opposing traffic would do that or anything...). But Winnipeg does have ... read more

I got up early as I realised that everyone was going to work and I wouldn't be able to say goodbye to anyone. So I got up at 8 and said goodbye to Curt and N-loth and watched TV for a while until Marie came down. I packed my things and waited fro D-loth to appear which he never did so I never got to say goodbye and thank him for the use of his bed as he had been sleeping in the basement. Marie, SY and I went to The Mint which was very interesting. It was all about the how they make the money- they make money for 75 different countries and I learnt that 10c is a dime, 5c is a nickel, $1 is a loonie and $2 is a toonie. After an ... read more

As usual I had a slow start. SY was already working but we decided to see Sex and the City 2 which I wanted to see but was mainly SYs suggestion as he wanted to see hot girls. We went in the afternoon and I loved it-I don't think it was quite what SY expected. After we went home to get D-loth and met his parents and N-loth at the Chinese. We ordered an array of different food and it was super tasty so I had 3 plates. It was my last night and D-loth and N-loth were going to play basketball so SY and I went with them so we could shoot some hoops and watch them play as I wanted to see a game which was on TV. I couldn't believe how fast the ... read more

We went to Viva for lunch which is a Vietnamese restaurant which is ridiculously cheap and exceedingly tasty. We had springs roll and then a dish of noodles, lettuce, soup and meat and the peanut butter sauce was super tasty. We packed some things and end for the lake which was just over an hour drive on the most straight, flat and wide roads ever. The cabin was beautiful and reminded me of when I went camping when I was younger. Marie, Curt, Marie's mum Mamay and her sister Jeanne and her husband were there. We had taken some beer and wine so we cracked open a beer and relaxed and watched the black hawks vs San Jose. We strolled down to the lake which was about an 8 minute walk. The lake was massive and the ... read more

Bismarck to Rugby to International Peace Gardens to Winnipeg I know my travel blog is getting a late start but you have to have WIFI to publish so here goes… A big thanks to JoLynn for planning my Nova Scotia “Send-Off”. We had many friends there and it was a great event. Honey, thanks for all your planning and special touches to make it special. I love you and here’s a great big “thank-you” across the miles. A little rain did not ruin the excitement. I had been planning the Nova Scotia ride for almost one year. Why Nova Scotia? Well, it’s hard to top the Alaskan Highway and 6,000 miles of beautiful mountain scenery. So, the Eastern part of Canada beckoned after researching the far East Provinces and Nova Scotia had a lot of things ... read more

Curt picked me up and took me to Marie's school again. It was great to see the children again and I went in on a great day because it was rainbow day which meant that the children came in wearing different colour clothing and they stuck rainbows on card and ate rainbow ice cream which the teachers got as well. It was rainbow day because the children had learnt all the colours in the rainbow. We took them out for play time where the children picked daffodils and I would make chains out of them for the children. At lunch it was a pot luck so all the teachers had taken food and main so good but the deserts were super tasty-unfortunately I was wearing my white dress which was fairly tight at the time so ... read more
