Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407We flew out of Richmond this morning at 7:30 at 62 degrees, through beautiful skies in Chicago at 28 degrees, and then on to Winnipeg. We arrived in Winnipeg around noon local (1:00 ET), into 25 mph winds, 20 degree temps, and snow flurries. The Natural Habitat Adventures (our trip outfitters and the same ones that we used for our Africa trip) representative was waiting for us at the airport and took us to the Fort Gary Hotel about 15 minutes away. The Fort Gary Hotel was built between 1911-1913.We will stay here tonight and tomorrow night, exploring Winnipeg, and then head on to Churchill, Manitoba ... read more

This is a dream trip...and now you are rightly asking...is a dream trip for you going to Winnipeg after Toronto? The answer is obviously no...but I'm on the road...actually...I'm on the move...no car or much road involved here...and I'm on my way to something pretty special...and the way to get there, is special by itself! So my next stop is Winnipeg. Trust me, from here, the next three entries should be a little more insane...and not specially in a chronological order. I'm in the middle of the dream right now, writing this after a nearly completed day...a very long day, which could be far from being over...a day where I already took 400 pictures...yes...in a single day! So here I am in Winnipeg...or rather, here I was...and here I'll be again pretty soon. Pretty interesting to ... read more

Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407Since train arrival times in Canada are apparently something of a guessing game involving wegee boards and a healthy dose of 'blind mans bluff', we decided to overnight in the capital of Manitoba, Winnipeg (home of the windiest street corner in the world- Portage & Main- and it's usually a bone chilling Arctic wind at that!!). DH was positively giddy that not only had we booked into the historic Fort Gary Hotel (previous visits had us in the Lincoln Motel- somewhat unfairly referred to as the Stinkin Lincoln) but she was also able to secure us Room 202. The Fort Gary Hotel is one of those grand old hotels built by the railroads at the turn of the century and as such, it has seen its share of tragedy and turmoil- there are a ... read more

Author's notes: 1) I don't want to use any names, so I will refer to people by their initials. 2) Thanks to M for letting me use his photos and video! It feels like we've been living in the car for a week. Actually we left mom's last Friday morning, with the burning goal to make it to Winnipeg on time for Canada Day festivities. None of us had ever spent any time in Winnipeg, so we thought we'd check the city out in party mode. We left Bonfield (North Bay) around 8AM, crossed the US border at Sault Ste Marie to cut under lake Superior. We spent 2.5 rather uneventful days, whizzing through Michigan, Wisconsin & Minnesota, marveling at the small differences in the cultural landscape (hardly anyone speeds). We made it to Winnipeg Sunday ... read more

Blog entry by D. Nichol - Guest Contributor/Primary Driver May 20 - 22, 2013: East Selkirk, MB. This time, the same as every other time, it felt good to get back to where I once belonged. Calming. Familiar. ‘Back Home’. As we pulled into the driveway shortly after 12:00am on May 20, I could see a sign at the road but it was too dark to read at the time. I commented how I was sure it was something for sale by Dad. After a well deserved sleep-in, we looked at the sign the next day and sure enough, for sale was: 2 electric motors, boat motors, a 14 - 16’ boat cover, and a Tassimo Coffee Maker. It’s funny how Winnipeg’s Craigslist/Kijiji would get tens of thousands of potential buyers a day while the car ... read more

We had a 4-hour layover in Winnipeg, so we took advantage of a city tour that Via arranged with a local bus company. Invariably I find these tours are a great source of historical information about a city and this one was no exception. We visited the legislature, a beauiful sculpture garden, the grave of Louis Riel, and a church, driving through many interesting neighborhoods along the way. Many photos of this tour can be found at https://picasaweb.google.com/109471170472848057534/WinnipegAndPrairies Then, back on the train for the last leg of our journey. We both agreed that if the train were to be delayed a day, we would be happy to remain on board as long as they continued to feed and care for us as they have so far! In the afternoon our car attendant gave a very ... read more
