"Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind" -- Seneca I have to start out by saying, "Wow!" My life has changed so much in the past two months. Even though it's a little embarrassing to admit, for awhile there in February, I was a snotty mess, curled up on my couch feeling pretty sorry for myself. When I was not at work, I spent a lot of time uncontrollably crying, not eating, and watching action movies since romance movies just made me gag. I also filled the silence listening to the songs, 'Burning House' and 'Shut Up and Drive' which were supposed to make me feel better. Of course, there was some Adele music in there too which has made me come to the conclusion --- Adele is amazing, no one can ... read more

It's been quite awhile since I've found time to post, and so much has happened. 2015...wow just thinking about it makes me sigh. 2015 was one of the most difficult years of my life! It definitely wasn't all bad, but collectively, it was a pretty tough one. I know..2015 has been over for a little while since it's already mid-February in 2016, but even now, I'm still recovering from the year of chaos. The year started well with a nice night out dancing for new years, but shortly after led to me heading back to East Lansing earlier than normal. The next few months were just a blur of teaching, data analysis, and non-stop writing. The timer had started for my intended defense date. Also thrown in there were numerous job applications and interviews, overseeing a ... read more

Today Tim and I decided to really explore downtown Winnipeg. I started out the day wearing two different earrings and only noticed after a couple of hours. Sheesh! People must have questioned my fashion sense! We got our walking tour map out and set out from the French Quarter where we were staying. I've never been to Winnipeg, but people who have always seem to talk about it in a disparaging manner or give it nicknames like Winterpeg or the Slurpee Capital of the World. Winnipeg surprised and delighted us. We were blown away by its history, architecture and beauty. Had we known, we would have visited it years ago instead of avoiding it. In fact, we almost skipped it on our cross-Canada tour altogether and what a pity that would have been. Our day was ... read more

Tim and I will be couchsurfing for a portion of trip, staying with eight different hosts throughout Canada. Couchsurfing.com is a social site which helps travelers meet hosts in their own or different countries. Hosts, who are often travelers themselves and want to meet and interact with other travelers, sign up on the site to share their homes. Free accommodation ranges from simple couches to spare bedrooms and guest cottages. Not only is your place to sleep free, you often make friends for life, experience your destination from a local perspective, and take part in a truly social experience. You can choose the kind of host you wish to stay with (e.g., gender, single, couple, age, etc.) and can get a feel for their personalities based on their profiles. You can see reviews left by other ... read more

One hour into the day 6 drive we reached central time, and ended up at the same time that we started out at! We crossed the continental divide just north of Thunder Bay. People don't often think of it that way, and in fact, the sign only meekly described it as, “Arctic Watershed”. From here on in to the BC-Alberta border, all the water flows north to the Arctic and splits our continent into the southern and northern pieces. Landscape changed again, from frequent turns and elevation changes, to straighter stretches of road with fewer hills. The forests continue, with occasional grassy patches, suggesting the Shield is loosening its grip on the terrain. Lakes and meadows appear more frequently than before. Near Dryden, the landscape appeared different from back in 1986 (photo 1). I was hoping ... read more

It's 12.56 on the 11 June. So currently I'm sitting on the bus just 2 hours out of Winnipeg, on our way to Banff. In the last couple of days we've already travelled 1400 miles, and still have 22 hours of travelling to go today. Sunday was technically our day off. However, it was the farmers market that morning so Sandy needed someone to go with him, bright and early at 7.30, to set up and help out selling the bags of salad we'd prepped the day before and cook the farms homemade burgers. Kate drew the short straw, so by the time the rest of us were up - around 8.30, she was gone. For Rosie, Matt and I, the morning and early afternoon was spent mainly just sitting around and searching for a place ... read more

Oh boy, day 3 was rough! We were plagued with traffic and bad weather on and off the whole drive. It was a mess! We started off pretty great though. Went to the Mall of America before we got on the road. It turned out we were closer to Minneapolis than we thought so it made getting to the mall pretty easy. This place was insane! I couldn't even fathom the size of this mall. Three stories of store after store, an aquarium on the first floor, oh and don't forget the mini theme park in the middle of everything! Yup, that would be Nickelodeon Universe with Nickelodeon themed rides/roller coasters. What!? If only we were 15 years younger.. To answer your question, yes, of course we did some shopping in the Mall of America. You ... read more

Finally! We made it to game day. I have been waiting for this day for 3 months so you bet I was pumped! Since we didn't have anywhere to be until 3:00 we just checked out a little bit of Winnipeg and hung out at the hotel all day. Winnipeg didn't have much to offer but it was pretty interesting seeing the stores that were the same as the US as well as the ones that weren't. We also did a little people watching at the hotel while deciding if we wanted to take the shuttle or drive ourselves to the field. After seeing the line for the shuttle, we opted to drive ourselves, which ended up being much easier than we anticipated. So we made it to the field about half way into the first ... read more

Geo: 49.8994, -97.1407We just returned to Winnipeg at around 6:00 pm. But before leaving Churchill, we did some more exploring, went by the dog sledding, and visited the "bear jail". All of the inmates have been released, but they do not let humans in to interact with the bears anyway. They do not want them to get used to humans....for obvious reasons.Back to Richmond tomorrow!... read more
