Alas...as the title suggests, this is not yet a real entry. I'm still at home, I don't fly out for another 10 days, and I don't have anything of interest to talk about. "So why this entry?" I hear many of you ask. Well, the answer is threefold. First, this entry will test my ability to navigate the travelblog site. Second, it will allow all those that I have taken the liberty of subscribing to my blog the opportunity to decline said subscription before they are bombarded with entries entitled "I was at another castle/church/pile of rocks" and the like. And finally, I've never before let a lack of anything interesting to say stop me so why start now? There seems to be a bit of confusion as to what I'm doing or where I'm going ... read more

Welcome to my blog - of course since I have yet to subscribe anyone to my blog I suppose in fact I am welcoming myself. Something akin to talking to myself! Much like the advise I have always given my children I should stop talking to fools and choose more intelligent company!... read more

The short journey from Seattle to Vancouver was good, so used to the Greyhound buses by now. We met some boys (Paul, from the UK and Nathan from OZ) from the same hostel in Seattle just as we were leaving and shared a taxi to the Greyhound station. This time at customs everything went fine, nobody was even interested in my luggage. Great! Once we arrived we realised that two girls from the Seattle hostel were also on the same bus (Lucy from the UK and Steph from Germany). It also turned out that we were all staying in the same hostel in Vancouver! So once we arrived Thommo and I tried to get some money out as we only had 10 Canadian dollars left from our earlier visit, however a large majority of ATM’s do ... read more

Hey y'all, Hows everyone doing? O.k, so heres the update so far.... After spending the first week chilling out with my mates Rich, Kev, and Carl in Vancouver, going to a huge park called Stanley Park, drinking, eating out and general kicking back and enjoying Canada, we headed to Vancouver Island through the gulf islands via ferry and onto Victoria (the capital) where the boys are from. Their high school was celebrating its 100th year, so was hosting an all american (!!!) weekend of 'socker', bbq, beer gardens, tour around the school. A very strange affair I have to admit. It was exactly as you might imagine a posh, american stlye school 'fun day' to be even though it's canadian and supposed to be run by english influences!!! I think the head of the school is ... read more

Thoughts of Vancouver tend to conjure up a whirlwind of emotions. Like many cities world round it is surely a fountain of good and a haven for nasty. A bittersweet, tragically beautiful city, I love both for the character it adds and the fun to be had. A strange vibe surrounds downtown Vancouver as if to accustom its visitors to the rigors of inner city living without any of the stress. Vancouver drivers are quite possibly some of the most patient relaxed drivers on the planet, I know for sure that I would have been run down many times over if I were somewhere different! The people are friendly (be it lacking a sense of humor at times) and the scenery is the perfect backdrop for all its health conscious, sport loving inhabitants. The people I ... read more

There are 16 days left until Danielle and I jump on a plane, and meet with Carolyn in London to start our travels around Europe in June and July. August will have Carolyn and I road tripping across Canada from Halifax to Vancouver. Our departure date is May 31, and we have tons to do until then. I find I'm doing something travel-related with almost all of my spare time between jobs, whether it's visiting doctors, picking up last minute things, or writing down as much info as possible from the travel books going back to the library. The current Europe plan is as follows: London, Brussels (Belgium), Munich (Germany), Prague & Czesky Krumlov (Czech Republic), Vienna (Austria), Budapest (Hungary), Brasov & Sinaia, (Romania), Sofia & Plovdiv (Bulgaria), Istanbul, Izmir & Selcuk (Turkey), a couple Greek ... read more

Bird report for North West Pacific Coast, May 2006 As we approach 250 species on our North American bird list, it is becoming more difficult to find “new” species, especially as we have been in coastal habitat for most of the past 6 weeks. Outlined below are some of the wildlife highlights we have experienced on our travels north through Oregon, Washington, and Vancouver Island, not an exhaustive list of birds seen. Ospreys and Bald Eagles have been seen almost daily, as have Common Loons. Other exciting sea and estuary birds have been Caspian Terns, Pigeon Guillemots, Red-necked Grebes, Rhinoceros Auklets, Horned Grebes, Marbled Murrelets, Harlequin Ducks, Black Oystercatchers and Common and Red-breasted Mergansers. The whole of the west coast has been good for sea-lions and seals. The High Desert of northern Oregon brought us our ... read more
