Upon a friend’s suggestion I’ve created this site, so that instead of sending out mass e-mails every now and then, people can check in if and whenever they want to. I’m only gone for a month and a half, so I’ll use the site mainly to post pictures… once I buy a digital camera.... read more

This entry is in honour of the crazy army of East Pender Street, Vancouver. To explain a little further, the gloriously basic Pender Lodge hostel, in which we had the honour of spending three suprisingly peaceful nights appears to be located at some cosmic crossroads where all the crazy people of the world generate. A favorite diversion on the walk into Vancouver would be to count the number of people with 'the look'. A look of determined confusion on their face as they made their winding way around China town, sometimes asking you questions such as "Are you a human being?" A fair question you might say but not one I felt inclined to discuss in much detail with the group of guys as they all looked like extras from a Mexican bandit film. We counted ... read more

Hello everybody, John here. Firstly apologies for the lack of photos, as warned in the introduction we have totally failed to master digital cameras, or the leads that go into the PC. We'll try and upload some photos soon. Until then, try imagining the wonderfully described scenes below. Finally am getting round to write this at 8.20pm Vancouver time, but my body is saying "Why are you still up? its 5am, you crazy fool" (although unfortunately I haven't morphed into Mr. T, maybe I'll get some plastic surgery in LA to fix that). Sunday was the longest sunday ever, beginning at 4am in Coventry and finishing some 27 hours of continuous travelling later talking to an excitable Chinese man in a random hostel in Vancouver. After being told to sleep in a double bed our hostle ... read more

After spending our last weekend in Melbourne with our fantastic friends & family, the next couple of days were spent running around and getting everything organised. When we left for Nadi (Fiji), we knew it was time to 'relax', and somehow, so did the airport screen. Two days of resort living, with poolside bars, reading & breakfast buffets was just what we needed before our 14 hour flight to Vancouver. Flying in over Vancouver Island was spectacular. As we flew into the airport, the beautiful city skyline and mountainous backdrop had us excited. We cabbed to our hostel, and as we were getting out our luggage, the cab driver advised us that "you have to be a bit careful around here" and "this neighbourhood is quite notorious". Oh dear! Needless to say, the hostel was a ... read more

We planned on staying in Canada for 5 weeks and it turned into 17. This was due to some extenuating circumstances and we decided to make the best of them. Here is what we did for those extra few months. Liam managed and served at earls restaurant www.earls.ca Katharine helped out with the Plan Advocacy Network www.plan.ca We both helped out Marilyn at Cuisine and Company www.cuisineandcompany.ca These were great experiences and kept us really busy. Besides being enjoyable they were also able to help maintain our budget and we ended up leaving with a little more money in our pocket then when we started. We also spent a lot of time: Meeting Liam’s family and friends (a real pleasure for Liam as he has only been home for 4 months in the last 2 years) ... read more

Vancouver is the sister city to Melbourne and recently beat Melbourne as the most liveable city in the world. Not to be a sore loser or anything, but the judges are clearly out of their minds. Unless of course they were in deep conversation with the city's homeless population which you seem to bump into every few metres down the street, due to the fact that almost all of Canada's ENTIRE homeless community descend into Vancouver because it's one of the few cities in Canada where it's actually warm enough to live on the streets all year round. Moste liveable city? Yes, I suppose the homeless would think so. Depends who you ask, I guess. But I must admit, Vancouver really hasn't endeared itself to me much. I like the beautiful hanging baskets, and the Japanese ... read more

Riding into the ferry terminal carpark at Haines, Alaska, it’s a big carpark and I ride down the No. 2 lane as I’d been told, already a lot of cars and 8 bikes there, suddenly a car driving down lane 1 turns in front of me, I veer right, evasive action mode, to try and get around but he’s turning too fast and I smash into his right front corner, wobble on a metre or two and crash out!!…..Check fingers and toes, check everything else, feels ok, stagger up, the front end of the little Chevy has been torn off and dents on the door and bonnet, fark!, what about the bike, my heart sinks…a couple of BMW riders have raced over from the queue, the brotherhood again!…one takes a couple of pix, they help me ... read more
