This wasn't really how I had planned my last day to go.. at all. Started off in the morning packing and cleaning my room which will now be a spare bedroom, said goodbye to my pets ( hope by kitty is doing okay without me) said a final goodbye to Ross. The entire morning I was feeling off but I figured it was just from the nerves and stress. Half way to the airport we had to pull over so I could be sick. Once arriving at the Hamilton airport, we easily got my tickets and found our way to my boarding area. I got sick 3 more times before even getting on the plane so I knew this flight would be 4 hours of torture. I sat in row 7c, an aisle seat. A gross, ... read more

Home again, jiggity jig! Said farewell to A&KB at the hotel this morning, then headed to the airport to catch our flight back home. Finally found a football jersey, so there is now an official Netherlands jersey added to my collection (Italy, Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Slovakia, and England for anyone who's wondering), although I didn't spot any official Swedish, Danish, or Belgian on the trip (does Belgium even compete in these things?). The best part? It's in my size (Kids' XL) AND it was on sale - which meant I got it for about 25 Euro cheaper than an adult jersey. Wooo! Picked up a couple of last-minute things for myself and for a few other people, as well. The Amsterdam Schiphol is the oddest airport I've ever been to. Not that it was ... read more

Hullo, and welcome to my revived travel blog... I'll get started in earnest on Saturday when I actually leave for Europe... but in the meantime... Something is seriously, seriously wrong. I'm packing and it looks like everything I want to take is going to fit in my backpack on the first try. This NEVER happens to me. This is making me seriously wonder what I'm forgetting. And honestly, I can't think of what I could possibly be forgetting. I've made lists. I've cross-referenced the lists with one another (yes, I am that much of a nerd). There are electronic lists and paper lists. I have been checking things off methodically as I add them. Or maybe because I've been traveling so much for work over the last little while I've managed to actually become really good ... read more

I'm going to leave this as my introductory pre-trip post. I have one week left before my trip and four shifts left until I'm unemployed for the first time since I was fifteen. A bit odd that- I'm not sure if I'll be able to find a job as quickly as I need for school when I get back. I have no idea even what I'm doing next year. Currently I'm enrolled in a Bachelor of Arts program for the fall that I'm not super excited about, but we'll see what ends up happening. It didn't happen on my last two backpacking trips, but I'm holding out hope that on this backpacking trip I'll finally do this mystical thing called "finding myself." Who knows. So far the only thing I've found is that I'd rather be ... read more

A couple of quick stops this morning to buy just a bit more chocolate before we leave and drop off the keys to the apartment before we made our way to the airport. After that, it was all about airplanes and airports! Found our souvenir magnet at the Zurich airport before boarding our Swiss Air flight to Chicago. Spent the entire flight wathcing movies and eating! They had some of the best food we've ever had on a flight, although one of our neighbours would beg to differ. He was whining so much about the chicken meatloaf that Jon was just about ready to spear the meat with his own fork and eat it for the guy just to shut him up! Got into the Chicago airport around 4:00 and killed our 4 hour layover between ... read more

Finally...the day we have been waiting for. Josh picked us up to take us to Edmonton International. We had the fastest security and customs screening in history. They were even a bunch of comedians! (They got into the spiked eggnog a little too soon) Once through the check points the first departures board we came across showed delayed flights. Turns out that we are going to be behind about an hour and a bit. Could be a problem with a layover that supposed to be 2 hours. Once we finally arrived in Chicago we needed to exit the secure area and transfer to the international terminal, check in with Swiss air, clear security again, find a sandwich, and get in line for boarding. With only moments to spare, we make it onto the plane. Thank goodness. ... read more
