Canada Day I arrived on the 30th and after going to bed early, I woke up fresh early in the morning of July 1. I was jetlaged, 8 hours ahead of Edmonton, and pulling my boyfriend out of bed I jumped around eager to jumpstart my first day in Canada, and my first ever Canada Day. Unlike any other day in Canada, the 1st of July is a day of celebration and joy, cultural and family-oriented events, music and play. It is regarded as Canada's birthday! Starting the day, we took the bus downtown. Placing ourselves at the secluded seats at the end of the bus, we happened upon a somewhat desperate man. Not long after we had taken our seats did he engage us in conversation, telling us of what a terrible night he had ... read more

Information from YellowPages.ca: Starbucks in Edmonton = 44 Second Cup in Edmonton = 41 Tim Hortons in Edmonton = 45 Welcome to the continent of chain stores, heavy trucks and endless raffles! Welcome to North America, more precisely the city of Edmonton (population 782439), capital of Alberta. Not many people can boast that their first overseas adventure began in Edmonton. I dare say, not many tourists can boast to have visited this city, as it is not a major tourist attraction and is overshadowed by cities such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, and even Calgary. Though I shouldn't mention Calgary in a blog about Edmonton, seeing as they are ardent rivals. My plan is to stay in Edmonton for an entire month, while getting to know the life in Edmonton, something which has proven a bit ... read more

So after visiting West Edmonton Mall (WEM) last night, this morning I had plenty of time to wait for the morning rush to finish before making my way into downtown Edmonton. Roads are a little different and after a few meandering loops, I ended up climbing into downtown which is located atop a hill overlooking the river. I found a parking station which was $14 daily max which is pretty good for a business day right in the centre of town. The parking station is connected to the City Centre shopping complex which is a linked mall with overhead walkways. It is not a single mall, but looks like one owner has bought out a bunch of smaller malls and linked them all together to make the City Centre. Probably a good idea in the cold ... read more

So this morning I bid farewell to the Canadian Rockies and it wasn't a nice very nice morning. Was cold and wet in Jasper so I was happy to get away. Went for a coffee run at Bear's Paw Bakery and did take out this time and this server made a much better coffee than yesterday's server. The past 4 days in the heart of the Rockies has been quite uplifting for me. Some majestic scenery, the peace and tranquility and the friendliness of everybody I met meant it has been an invigorating few days and I can honestly say that my mind has been completely worry free. i killed a bit of time back in the hotel as I didn't want to leave too early as it was only about 3 hours to Edmonton and ... read more

Here we are in enjoyable Edmonton where it is cold and winter. We left Mesa on April 6th and drove north through Nevada, Idaho and Montana to reach the Alberta border. Drove the second day in swirling snow which started to settle in Dillon, Montana. It was time to stop and we decided we were not going to out run the snow storm that was coming in. Settled into a campground and woke up the next morning to snow on the ground and a blizzard outside. We just stayed put. Made the best of our day by having a cocktail party for the other 4 units sitting out the storm. Very enjoyable. All were from the Alberta area. Ended up going for dinner with new Red Deer friends and travelled the next day with them to ... read more

Left OC on Friday morning to travel up to Edmonton, Canada for the Grey Cup. This is Canada's version of the Super Bowl. Met up with Cole towards the end of team dinner and met a few coaches and the general manager of the Roughriders. We headed over to one of the pregame parties for the Roughrider fans, and got to slide by the hour long line in to the event. Explored the city on my own the next day and met Cole for lunch and some hang time. Later had dinner with Cole at Rick's Grill. He treated after losing at paper, scissors, rock. Took buses a couple hours early over to the stadium, and I do believe the Roughrider fans may be more enthusiastic than the Packers, or the Montana Grizzlies. The whole event ... read more

Progress is made! I have been shot up like a pure bred bull and have a bag of pills to take with me. Pills for my stomach, for malaria, for altitude. Maybe I can sell a few when I get there. I have the Nepalese VISA and a single entry Indian VISA. It appears I have to attend the consulate in Vancouver to get approval for a double entry VISA. So, that adventure awaits when I am there later this month. Now the word is out I am going to India. I am getting regular links to yoga retreat facilities and other details. I am also approached by people with every horror story imaginable. Bathroom stalls that are 1 inch deep of stuff and a hole in the floor. Rabid dogs that run up and down ... read more

Our countdown is getting nice and small...only 3 more sleeps! Yesterday I wrote my CASLPA exam (whew! glad that's over!), so now it feels like we're getting really close. AND, I don't have to study anymore so I can finish my packing. Trevor finished packing yesterday and his backpack is pretty empty. This is good for me, because I am guaranteed to fill it up with stuff once we're there. I'm sure packing will be slightly more challenging for me...I generally pack too much stuff (big surprise?) My brain just can't comprehend how I will survive 6 weeks with 5 shirts, other than buying more there. Yay shopping :) That's about it for now. I'll just need to keep myself busy until Wednesday night. Probably cleaning the house and baking... I'll need some volunteers to accept ... read more
