Dear all, Well, it's hard to believe that almost two months has come and gone, and I am once again safe and sound within the familiar walls of Edmonton. The last few weeks of my trip were as unbelievable as all of the rest -- maybe even sweeter because I took so much out of them realizing they were the last. A quick recap of the most memorable moments: I managed to take a trip out to the Red Canyon and the Fairy Stream, both not far from the beach town of Mui Ne. The Red Canyon was closed for the season, and so I couldn't trek in to any great distance, but it was still an amazing sight. The Fairy Stream was probably a close second to the magnificence of the sand dunes; a fresh ... read more

Today is Canada day! Coming from Northern Ireland, where national holidays tend to divide sections of the community rather than unite them (the 12th of July.. St Patricks day).. it's a bit strange to see how everyone feels that, on Canada day at least, they can unite under a flag, sing an anthem and feel truly Canadian. There is a true sense of patriotism.. and it is impossible to ignore the bunting everywhere with the Canadian flag printed on it.. the reduced price of maple syrup in the supermarkets and the fact that some people feel the need to stand in their backgardens and sing the Canadian national anthem regardless of tune or rhythm. We started celebrations with a BBQ at the Dube's house.. where the food was amazing. We all got into the spirit ... read more

After 14 hours on a plane (throughout which time I had the only murderous thoughts I can recall in my lifetime when some irritating lady, to whom courtesy was clearly an alien concept, decided to recline her chair to an almost horizontal position.. pinning me to the back of my seat) we arrived in Edmonton. After being practically force-fed aeroplane meals every thrity minutes by overly cheerful air hostesses and the aforementioned incident of the reclining chair, I was not in the most joyful of moods but this was a bad start to what would be one of the most amazing travel experiences I have had so far. I was travelling to Edmonton from Northern Ireland with a group of 9 other young people (5 Protestants and 5 Catholics, 5 boys, 5 girls) as part ... read more

Hi folks, Been a busy week! spent a few days doing school cricket clinics at Senator Pat (or monty as I like to call it) Burns junior high trying to enlighten the Canucks on the game. Followed that up with a trip to the season opening Calgary Vipers baseball game on Thu night. Pretty good fun! There was an Aussie pitcher, heap of guys from U.S, Japan, Sth America, and just one lousy Canadian. And he WAS lousy. The match was played against the highly fancied Gary (who names a city Gary???) Railcats. The standard was ok, some average throwing and catching cost the Vipers, who went down 9-5. Discovered wheat beer and instantly banned it from future consumption along with the tree beer from Kelowna. Got into the spirit of the crowd by sledging the ... read more

Hi everyone! I just thought I would welcome you all to my blog and tell you about my travel Plans - because now I have signed up for this and I am not travelling yet and so don't have anything to write about my travels yet! But I am leaving on Sunday morning for Vancouver where I will get on a ferry to go to Powell River where I will spend three weeks working with the National Youth Choir. I assume that since it would be impossible for us to sing for 24 hours a day, I will have a significant amount of free time and therefore will have time to relay all my stories to you in detail! I haven't started packing yet... but I have started to study Thai a little obsessively in preparation ... read more

Hey everyone! As you probably know, I'm leaving for Thailand in 4 days! My plane leaves Edmonton on May 2nd at 7:30am (I think anyways... gotta check on that) and I should be in BKK on May 3rd at 11:45pm. Yeah... it's a super looong flight, plus a lovely 9 hours in layovers. Re. my intinerary: I haven't planned too much yet, but I hope to be in Sisaket (in NE Thailand, near Cambodia) by May 6th, where I will volunteer teaching English for 4 weeks. Then it's back to BKK to meet a friend, Jeremy, and down to the eastern beaches to PARTY!! By June 14th I have to be at Phuket to meet my Aunt who I will travel with for a little over two weeks on the west coast. By July I'll (hopefully) ... read more

Can you imagine a year ago I decided I wanted to leave Canada and continue my travels across Europe? When I think of my one year adventure across the world in those terms it seems so incredibly amazing how fast time does fly by. Then again any possible way I think about my trip I find it is incredible and think I am SO lucky to be able to fly over the rainbow. Here is my planned itinerary so far. The beginning is more relaxed and a take it as it comes style as I try to settle in and hopefully not buckle under the pressured search for a home and job. Then as I progress and get some income I’d like to pick up the pace a fair bit (and hopefully take in some concerts ... read more

So it just occurred to me that I leave for Thailand in less than a month, which may still seem like a lot of time, but when you take into consideration all the things I still have to get organized before I go, it would be a fair assumption to say that I’ll be up to my eyeballs in last minute shit soon enough. Hopefully I’ll be able to limp my way through finals and then can really buckle down and focus on the 3 months ahead of me which will consist of lounging on the beach or in the jungle (serious hammock time!), riding elephants, drinking awesome cheap beer, scuba diving and attending all-night beach parties. Tough life, I know. But before you start your whining, don’t pretend I didn’t hassle you to come… we ... read more
