Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302As you may have had a hint from the blog yesterday, we needed to shake things up a bit yesterday to combat Bean Ennui. After swimming around down at the beach for a while, I shipped them off to an are that has sand to build some castles and whatnot, which they haven't done for a while. After that we made our way over to a restaurant for a dinner out at the beach. The kids each ordered a burger and I ordered Gözleme, the textbook definition describes it as "a savory Turkish pastry made by rolling dough with a thin roller and repeatedly folding it. It is filled, and browned in a pan." I've seen pictures of ladies rolling out the dough and they use a big round table to do it. It ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302I think it's time for another day trip because our blogs are getting boring and my children our bored. Note that I say the children are bored. After I have done my chores, I am delighted to step outside and look at PHOTO_ID_L=my-view.jpg which I can view from any one of three outdoor seating areas. Here is one: PHOTO_ID_R=one-of-my-3-outoor-seating-areas.jpgWhat are my chores? Well, they are similar to my chores at home, yet different. Cooking is a bit of a challenge because my pantry of staples is fairly small, I don't have access to many things that I usually cook with (both software and hardware). The children are relatively picky about their food both places. Josh, for instance, doesn't like melon or tomatoes which are both staples of the Turkish summer diet. I've adapted what ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We had huge waves at the beach yesterday. That is, huge waves for here. Usually there are very few waves, if any. All of them are generated by wind, not tide. We heard that there was rain in Istanbul the day before yesterday and that brought some good winds south to us. We all really enjoyed going out in the big surf and riding up and down on the waves. We also cracked up at the commotion generated by one of the buoys coming loose and letting a diving platform and a small pontoon boat get free. There must have been 15 people who came over to watch and help drag them both up on the beach. I'm guessing that when we get back down there today it will all be set to rights. This ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We didn't blog yesterday because we were very busy and got home uncharacteristically late. We were late getting home in a good way. Let me explain.Yesterday we went to the pool in the morning and met up with Josh's friend Amishay (this is not the correct spelling, btw, but the best I could do without a Turkish keyboard) at the beach in the afternoon. Kate and I really enjoyed watching Amishay's mother and father swinging his little brother (maybe 18 months old) to sleep in a towel while singing to him. Afterward he slept on a beach lounge chair for about an hour-so cute! He's just a little round ball of baby in a Speedo.Amishay's mother and I worked our way through a conversation using a dictionary. When we left, she invited us all ... read more

Geo: 37.0421, 27.131Mom: I will start off this theme blog. I think I am addicted to honey-roasted, sesame-coated peanuts. I like being able to go to market day and get an unbelievable array of fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, olives and whatnot. I read in a book that more Turks are shopping in the big markets, but, at least in this area, I don't see how that's possible. The food that you can get in the market is far different than the food that is available at the grocery. There is some overlap, but not a whole lot. I love all the different shades of blue from the sky and the water. The flowers and plants are gorgeous. One of the few things that I can think of that would significantly add to the experience of sitting ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We have had plenty of time to work on those hard-to-get-around-to skills here. So far, Alex has learned how to dive and tie his shoes and shuffle a deck of cards. Kate also learned how to shuffle cards. I learned how from my Aunt Diane in Canada, so I guess it's a good summer vacation skill. I've included pictures and video of my sea monkey at the pool.... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302We started today with a bus ride into town to go to market. I screwed up which day was market day and we ended up going to the grocery, but it's all good. The interesting thing about going on the bus is that you hop on and sit down and then pass your fare up person by person to the front of the bus and then the bus driver gets it, makes change and pulls a ticket out for you--all while he is driving. Given how much attention it takes to drive successfully in Turkey, I'm a little concerned that he is driving and making change at the same time, but it's not my country.Today I took a series of snapshots of some of the flowers and plants we see on our walk to ... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302One day we walked down to the pool. The pool is big and is shaped like the letter P. Alex and I were playing tag where we would jump in the water or walk around the rim of the water trying to get each other. It was my turn to try and evade Alex. It was about as easy as slipping on ice. One time I dove into the water. The cool water went around me and I felt pleasant and well. I was going along in the gracefulness and coolness of the water and then ubruptly pain shot up my nose. I had hit the other side of the wall--some concrete. It hurt. I came up to the surface. The pain was so harse it was hard to speak. Mom got me out ... read more

Geo: 37.0421, 27.131We were at the beach today. We had a great time. Until I bumped my head--hard. On wood. A nice man offered us a ride home. We accepted it. Now I am doing my blog. My head feels better. We put some ice on it at the beach and in the man's car. The gigantic block of ice fell out of the bag but I put it back in before it could touch anything. Mommy had a cold pack in the first aid kit and gave me a Tylenol and I swallowed it whole with water and drank some iced tea. Bye.... read more

Geo: 37.0391, 27.4302Today we are celebrating Kate's birthday. She is wearing a new red dress that she bought in Bodrum yesterday, the new pearl earrings that Alex bought her and playing with the new plush rabbit that Josh bought her. We spent the morning at the beach and are heading off in a minute to go buy a cake. Alex: Yesterday it was Kate's birthday. Early in the morning Kate opened presents. We didn't have any wrapping paper so we put a blindfold around Kate's eyes and we had her feel her presents and try to guess what they were. I got her pearl earrings and a silver dolphin necklace that I bought at St. Peter's castle. Dolphins are a symbol of Bodrum. There is also a statue in the water of Bodrum of dolphins. We ... read more
