Geo: 36.9575, 27.131This is information from our host. It's about a holy day that is celebrated today:Kandil It is necessary to add that Turks have a personal way of following Islam. A great number of Muslim Turks will enjoy a nice alcoholic beverage, smoke cigarettes and make the most of the "good things in life", though taking care not to do these during religious occasions such as Ramazan (Ramadan) or the Kandil. This is, of course, an unofficial declaration on your researchers part.Ramazan is the holy month when for thirty days a good Muslim lets nothing pass his/her lips during daylight hours; no eating, drinking, smoking or even licking a postage stamp. Some restaurants and nightclubs are closed during the month of Ramazan. Mosque festivals are called Kandil, which means Candle. It is so called because ... read more

Well, thıs ıs as far from Boulder as I'll get! Stıll offıcially in Europe & still 9 hrs ahead & 135 degrees around the globe. Bodrum (bode drum) Took the half hr ferry over. İts very hot! 41 degrees (C); that's about 107 F. Lots of shoppıng & aggressive bargaining. Didn't venture out from this beach, dock, shopping area, so similar to what I've been seeing. The only differences were the Turkish flags flying & using Turkish Liras instead of Euros. Glad I came though. & so the journey, now back towards home, continues. 7 Wonders of the Ancient World (I know this stuff has been in the news a lot lately, so maybe you don't need the refresher) Only the (1)Pyrimids in Giza still remain standing. Once there I enquired about getting a ticket to Bandirma and found out the next one was at 5:30, not 9:00 as the staff at the hostel had told me. Well stuff waiting around all day, and I then decided to head to the Otogar (bus station) and see where I could go instead. I asked the bus drivers how to get to the otogar but no one spoke English, and none of the buses use cash to pay for the fares. I paid 5L for a cab to the metro, then got the metro to the otogar and decided I would go to Bergamum instead. ... read more

May 2002 Please note the original story with photos can be found here at http://ajarncharlie.livejournal.com/25043.html As I sit here at the Bodrum airport ready to depart back to Germany, I have time to reflect on the incredible experience that Turkey and Greece has afforded me. To say the least, the people are what make places like Bodrum and Marmaris Turkey warm and friendly. The azure sea, the warm breezes, the clear blue skies and the cosmopolitan atmosphere all blend together to make this one of the more magical journeys of my life. Where do I begin? It seems I arrived from Germany a bit ahead of the normal tourist season, which appears to start on June 1. Before that date, things such as ferry schedules and who is going where or when seems to be a ... read more
